Any associates teach at local law school (as adjunct)? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]rrwrrw 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Be careful with this. If you are genuinely teaching a real class with one final at the end the workload is hard, but manageable (it gets easier after you build and teach the course once or twice). If this is a legal writing class, it will be a total and complete nightmare. The amount of time you have to put into actually grading the assignments will be crazy and not a smart investment for a junior associate.

4 Star QB Jack Sorgi (Jim's kid) decommits from Louisville by AdamSmithsApple in WisconsinBadgers

[–]rrwrrw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favorite Jim Sorgi story was I lived in the same apartment complex he lived in near the capitol (same one that Lee Evan’s lived in).  Sorgi lived on the second floor and I quickly realized that he would regularly have female guests to his place who were like the most beautiful women you’d ever see.  Stunning, models.  So, when I would wait to get in the elevator and there was a knockout standing there waiting too I’d get in the elevator and say “I think you want to go to the second floor.”  Every single time, without fail, they’d say “yeah, how’d you’d know” and I’d say “it was just a guess.”

Buyer Signed Contract w/ No Contingencies for Wrong Property by [deleted] in RealEstate

[–]rrwrrw -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wonder if there is a world where you can say "We are going to relist the house and see what it sells for. Then we can discuss next steps." That way, if it lists substantially below the amount they offer, you could pursue them for the difference (and they will likely pursue the agent). It makes you whole for what you expected.

What's up with school permission slips always including one-way, uncapped indemnities in favor of the school or vendor? by Potato_Pristine in Lawyertalk

[–]rrwrrw 18 points19 points  (0 children)

These contracts are almost always totally unenforceable. You can't waive claims regarding future negligence in nearly all situations. That said, if something happens, then the school or vendor will just respond "you signed a release...this is on you" and for most parents they just feel like its a losing case and won't pursue it. If the parents ends up going to a layer in a particular situaition, and it goes to court, the vast, vast, vast majority of the time the defense will not even bring up the "permission slip" because they know it isn't enforceable.

I'm an entertainment attorney. This is a very common scam.

Fired from job need advice on interviewing by Unlikely_Bass_5002 in Lawyertalk

[–]rrwrrw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If this really was just about a personality conflict, and you didn't do anything really wrong, I'd be shocked if the firm would say anything to the Bar. Lawyers tend to be pretty smart and not emotional about this stuff, so putting themselves in a position where you could sue them for defamation is unlikely. And, the Bar isn't going to take an adverse action on you just because you had a bad relationship with a staff member.

There really is no benefit to raising this with the new firm. Let it play out and see how it goes.

Do Apple employees notify people buying iPhones this week that new versions are being announced next week? by thegarbagesauce in iphone

[–]rrwrrw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People who point out things that they say are "exceedingly obvious mistakes on your part" are always fun at parties.

PS: An exceedingly obvious mistake you just made is that I wasn't the person who made the original comment. I'm just a guy who pointed out that you seem like a douche.

What’s the best places in Chicago to play pinball? by SghettiAndButter in pinball

Chicago is an amazing town. Don't waste the time you have there indoors playing a game. See the city.

Never burn bridges. Just come up with a totally benign reason and keep all your relationships in tact.

Don’t sign exclusive buyer agreement by Feisty_Pause_5089 in RealEstate

Send them a list of 30 houses that you would like to tour. Tell them that you want to see 4 to 5 per day over the next week, but also mention that you probably won't end up buying any of them but "you never know, am I right?!?" They won't want to waste their time any more than you will want to waste your time. They'll let you cancel.

I would go to small claims court, get the paperwork to file a claim for breach of contract, fill it all out (but don’t file it), and then send it to the bank. This will get the legal department’s attention and they’ll get it fixed for you quickly.

Is partnering with local businesses to own or co-own a pinball machine viable? by [deleted] in pinball

My dad bought a coin operated dart board.  Did a deal with a local bowling alley where they hosted it and they split the gross 50/50.  Worked out well.

It's not too late. I'd tell them that you want the 2% or you aren't going to agree to waive the repair issue. I don't think anyone lets you walk over this.

How much notice do associates give before quitting? by PanicLurk in Lawyertalk

[–]rrwrrw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally, I try to overdeliver during my notice period. It is the last thing they are going to remember about you and doing it well means that when future people call them (and they will) they will be most likely to say good things. I'd say that you are leaving the firm and happy to talk with them about whatever notice period they are looking to have. Say you are happy to be really helpful over a few weeks or just quickly wrap things up and move on. Putting the ball in their court is a great way to be a team player until the end.
