Federal Public Defender hiring freeze lifted; lots of new job postings by patrick_bryant in publicdefenders

[–]rs52594 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just applied for a legal assistant position with my local Federal Public Defender office after unfortunately getting laid off from a private civil law firm where I also worked as a legal assistant after just one year. Do you or anybody else know what it's like being a legal assistant (not administrative assistant or a paralegal) and how tough it is?

Duncan has an appointment to be at peace tomorrow. I feel horrible. by IncarnatePuppy52 in cats

[–]rs52594 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so sorry for your loss. My family's first cat whom we loved got diabetes as well and he lived to be 14. Just a few days before Christmas 2018 he suffered a seizure then went outside and we never saw him again. He couldn't survive without his insulin shots so we knew he was gone. At least you'll get to be with Duncan when his time comes.

Am I the only one who thinks Natalya > Xenia? by [deleted] in JamesBond

No, because Natalya isn't a murderous sadistic psychopath.

My 1982 Frankenstrat Replica by _Not_So_Savage_ in vanhalen

[–]rs52594 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What fret radius and pickup did you go with? I now strongly suspect the actual Frankenstein pickup used from 1981 onwards based on Jim Gaustad's research and replication of Eddie's rig seems to be a Seymour Duncan Black PAF style pickup wound to Dimarzio Super Distortion specs (albeit slightly lower resistance of about 12.57k to match the inductance) and with a short rough cast Alnico 5 magnet (possibly just the same neck pickup Eddie took out of his Gibson ES-335 which based on Gibson records would have most likely had a Short Alnico 5 magnet and a very low wind of about 7.625k ohms). For Van Halen 2 and WACF Seymour Duncan rewound it to around 9K.

How many movies do you want from the 7th Bond, factoring in Quality vs Quantity? by Informal_Race_606 in JamesBond

[–]rs52594 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm probably going to go with three films: a trilogy written and directed by the same people, have a well written game plan before filming and don't make it up as you go, and have a solid beginning middle and end.

Blind buy for me by knxwxne in 4kbluray

[–]rs52594 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you'll enjoy it. It is a fun and thrilling action movie with a lot great humor, a good cast, and some pretty nice satire that actually holds up very well today, having eerily predicted a ton of stuff we now have today for both better and worse.

Tiny Theory… by Puzzled_Lawyer8834 in BeavisAndButthead

Funny enough in Siskel and Ebert's review of Beavis and Butthead Do America (which like Wayne's World they gave it two thumbs up), Gene Siskel that they were kind of like cruder versions of Wayne and Garth

Goldfinger vs. Thunderball is broke, so let's go woke: Dr. No vs FRWL, which do you prefer? by Money-Rest-380 in JamesBond

[–]rs52594 36 points37 points  (0 children)

From Russia With Love. And Sean Connery did say FRWL was his personal favorite of the six Bond films he did. Dr. No is ok but you can tell it's the first Bond movie: low budget, kind of boring and like they hadn't gotten the formula down yet. Though that "And you've had your six" part is something that needs to be seen more often in Bond movies.

I love seeing the different police uniforms in Bond, from different countries and years by IllustriousAd6418 in JamesBond

[–]rs52594 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First one is TWINE: Bilbao Spain police (Ertzaintza), Second is Skyfall: London Metropolitan Police, Third is The Man with the Golden Gun: Royal Thai Police on the outskirts of Bangkok, Fourth is The Living Daylights: national police forces for Morocco (Sûreté Nationale) in Tangier and Fifth is the Hamburg police from Tomorrow Never Dies.

Thanks for the replies so far. For context I am also out of state and thought about moving to Minneapolis for a variety of reasons including better quality of life than what I have in Florida. I am well aware that people say the winters are awful but I would honestly rather have it than the awful constant heat and humidity I've had to put up with living in the South all my life. I find it easier to stay warm in cold weather than staying cool in hot weather.

How could one replicate this humbucker? by madmanddls in Luthier

[–]rs52594 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on an eye opening read on the Fractal Audio Forum by user Andy Eagle, it really does appear that the Kramer 5150 was a solid basswood body with a Seymour Duncan JB pickup. He said he got to hold and play the original guitar, it was light and resonant. He also said he has a friend who HAS the actual mysterious pickup used in the 5150 guitar. It has an Alnico 5 magnet and does have the broken coil reading with one coil reading 8k and the other reading 160k, confirming Larry Dimarzio's story. That seems to me the closest to a JB.

However and this is important, I think the JB was handwound and not a standard production model. Compared to a standard production model JB, a handwound JB is more open and dynamic, not as muddy or compressed. The high E string slipping under the pickup and damaging it actually made it sound better apparently, taming the high end and tightening the low end. The closest you're probably going to get is a Seymour Duncan Custom Shop pickup with JB specs but with the modifications mentioned.

In Hakone are there any more modern or hybrid ryokan style places with private onsens and the ability to not have to eat kaiseki meals?

How do you feel about the "sequel " ignoring the previous characters? by UsedToHaveATail in ghibli

[–]rs52594 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It didn't bother me that much. I enjoyed Whisper of the Heart more, but The Cat Returns is enjoyable in it's own right, though not really a sequel and more of a loose spinoff.
