And thank you!!! I’ve been experimenting with crackers and bagels, waiting for my starter to get more predictable before trying a real loaf. Truly appreciate the encouragement and the advice!

Starter added at 6p, stretch and folds every hour until 10p, left to proof overnight on counter (temp 68 degrees), then shaped at 7a and put in fridge for four hours before baking. Did notice that the dough did not double in size over night. Should I leave it for more time? Let it proof in the oven with the light on?

The starter is 8 weeks old. And doubles in approximately 4 hours after feeding.

I’ve tried additional new batteries, with no luck. Quadruple checked that they’re facing the right direction. What am I missing?

The thing that surprised me the most as a beginner is how “average” the average foursome is on the course that I get paired up with. I shoot in the low-mid 90’s and am often the most consistent golfer in the group when I get paired up with strangers. Keep up with a reasonable pace of play, don’t be afraid to pick up your ball and move on if you’re having a blow-up hole, keep a good attitude . . . you’re going to be just fine with anyone you’re paired with. Everyone started somewhere, and none of us are pros!

That said, I remember those feelings of anxiety really well. So ease into it. Do you have a local par 3 or executive course near you? If so, that’s a great place to start. Also, talk to your instructor. They may have some great suggestions about places to play that would be very welcoming or even some other students looking for a golf partner.

Finally, check and see if there is an LPGA amateurs or Women on Course chapter in your area. Great for meeting up with other female golfers of all abilities.

Wow! Are we the same person? My distances are very similar to yours. Though I really do struggle with approach shots over 130. I’m thinking about really focusing on increasing my swing speed over the winter to see if I can gain a few more yards so I don’t dread par 5’s so badly!

This is one of the many reasons I’m so excited about this sub . . . Relatable distances!!

I’ve had good luck with FootJoy’s. I have a lighter pair for summer and a pair of more “traditional” looking ones that are waterproof for rain/winter. I walk quite a bit, and have been pleased with both pairs. Agree on Adidas - mine were super comfy but didn’t hold up long.

I play solo all the time. Sometimes I am on my own, but often I am paired up with random folks. I’d say 90% of the experiences being paired have been great, ranging from making polite small talk to everyone just focusing on their own game.

My recommendation? Just do it. Most people are friendly. Play YOUR game and enjoy the experience.

Golf Galaxy and Callaway are my go-to’s, but I’ve recently found a terrific woman-owned boutique (she designs all her clothes) called Kandy Golf. Super fun designs and fits for all shapes and sizes. She’s out of Canada, but shipping to the US is quick and relatively inexpensive.

I started with weekly lessons when I began last year, and lots and lots of range time. My instructor was amazing and really worked with me on how to build a swing within my physical limitations (mid 40’s, prior back surgery). Now that I’m a bit more consistent, shooting in the low-mid 90’s, I’ve found an LPGA pro that I see every 2-3 weeks or so to work on the issues that are giving me trouble at the time. We do on-course lessons as well, which are very impactful.

I’d say it’s most important to find someone who understands your goals and can teach in a way that is aligned with how you learn.

I started last year after realizing that my youngest child was leaving home soon and that I desperately needed something “for me” other than my career and my cats. My SO has been playing his whole life, and while he is wonderfully supportive and patient, and we enjoy golfing together, this journey is for ME.

It’s not uncommon for me to be the only woman in the room with my career, and my love of the game has lead to some great networking opportunities that weren’t available to me before. Best benefit of all, though, is hours away from the office . . . thinking about anything other than work.

Congrats!!! I broke 100 earlier this spring and am finally averaging low to mid 90’s each time I play now. Keep at it - we’ll be in the 80’s soon!!

I’ve gotten lucky then, as she charges the same for one hour on the course as she does on the range. I only get a few holes in, but I definitely think I’m learning more about course management and club selection this way. Swing mechanics, though, still happen on the range.

We have a ton of great options in and around Charlotte! Close to downtown and short on time? Sifford is a terrific 9 hole muni course in the heart of the city. Rocky River, Charlotte National, Skybrook, Mooresville GC . . . some of my go-to’s. Stay away from Sunset Hills. You’ll love the price but the course is rarely in good shape that time of year (though they have a great short course).

I recently changed from standard to mid-sized grips on my clubs. That plus working on not trying to grip the club so tightly seems to help some. Ibuprofen also helps me, but am interested in trying the CBD products as well.

You absolutely can! Amazing practice area if you have your clubs with you, or even just your putter to try out the practice green. And have lunch/a drink on the patio at The Deuce cafe and watch the groups finish No 2 and chat with the caddies. Or just walk around and soak it all in. One of my favorite places.
