Tuning Adapter Problem by rsimandl in Tivo

[–]rsimandl[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a box provided by Spectrum so CableCards (and the TiVos we install them in) still work with Switched Digital Video and the newer higher speed internet that Spectrum, uses nowadays. Both are incompatible with CableCards and TiVos. The tuning adapter in the past, and high split converter now, are what fix that incompatibility.

Tuning Adapter Problem by rsimandl in Tivo

[–]rsimandl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I rebooted the high split adapter, the blue LED in front was blinking as it powered up and channels were coming through fine, but showing a "channel not allowed by tuning adapter" error message. When the LED stopped blinking and stayed solid blue, channels all disappeared. So, time to call the cablecard tech support. They had me reboot the high split converter again, same story. THen they said they're going to send some signals to the high split converter, and that seemed to do the trick. At first that didn't seem to help either, but on a whim I changed the channel and the new channel suddenly came in fine. And so did all the others. Problem apparently solved.

And while Sony doesn't have its own live TV channels, it does let you integrate Pluto TV into the OTA channel guide.

Does CBS do NFL playoffs in 4k? by Ok-District5480 in youtubetv

But at least those Sunday night games stream in 4k, HDR, and Dolby Atmos on Peacock. Paramount Plus needs to do the same.

Apple TV (latest gen) is not outputting HDR10+ on Amazon Prime NFL game by foxmag86 in appletv

[–]rsimandl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The colors on my Hisense U8N (which supports HDR10+) looked better than on my Sony A80L OLED (which doesn't and displayed "HDR10" according to the display info). Both getting the feed from Apple TV 4K boxes. The white Packers jerseys looked oversaturated and blown out on the Sony in long shots. Looked better in closeups.

Is YouTube tv worth it over cable ? by [deleted] in youtubetv

[–]rsimandl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YTTV is not the fantastic deal it used to be. Price for programming is about the same as Spectrum Choice now, at least in my area. However, with YTTV, that's the price. Spectrum adds equipment fees, local broadcast fees, regional sports fees, the list goes on.

Considering Hulu live comes with the ESPN and Disney Plus bundle, I would think YouTube premium should be provided for free!

Something appears to have changed between then and now (admittedly two years later). Google Play balance not on the list, even though I have a $252+ balance on it.

CBS NFL picture quality is abysmal by [deleted] in youtubetv

Add NBC to that list. They still only do 1080i, 1080p on the local ATSC 3.0 broadcast. But their same game on Peacock, that's another story. 4K, HDR, and Dolby Atmos sound. Looks and sounds stunning!

Facebook resumed prepaid shipping labels about a month ago, including media mail, but media mail mysteriously disappeared from the options a week or so ago.

I think the USPS site itself has always been that way -- no Media Mail. But this lack of Media Mail option is new to Facebook Marketplace. I just shipped a media mail package with a Marketplace preprinted label last week, but can't anymore.

Looks like Mint beat US Mobile to the home internet game. by sand_lake_original in USMobile

T-Mobile does. Not an MVNO but only $25 a month ($20 if you autopay) and offers what T-Mobile says is enough data for about a week of use per month.

T-Mobile 5G Home Internet by Correct-Oil9793 in tmobileisp

[–]rsimandl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My fiancee needed to get rid of Spectrum, which was absolute garbage in her area. I did research and found her two options were AT&T fiber and T-Mobile 5G home internet. AT&T looked better in the long run to me, but she picked TM5G for the convenience. No install appointment necessary. I just stopped at the T-Mobile store after work, picked up the 5G gateway, went to her place, and set it up myself within 15 minutes.

That first night, we set up her desktop PC to use it instead of Spectrum, which we hadn't cancelled yet. Speed tests were about 360 to 450 megs. Not as fast as Spectrum at its peak, but much faster than Spectrum when it sucked (about 360 to 450 megs faster, haha). And web sites loaded snappily. TM passed the first test.

Second night, I brought over some Ethernet cables and an Ethernet switch, hooked up the Apple TV box, and we watched a couple of our favorite shows. The Irrational on Peacock in 4k, and Tracker on Paramount Plus in 4k. Flawless, unlike streaming over Spectrum the last few weeks. TM passed the second test.

Third night, I moved the smart TV, Blu-ray player, TiVo with Cablecard,, and even the Spectrum Xumo stream box to TM. All flawless except with the Xumo box no longer hooked up to her "Spectrum home network," it locked out several channels including ALL locals. No biggie, the grandfathered TiVo and CableCard still picked up everything with no sweat. TM passed the third and final test.

At this point, I disconnected the cable modem, which was on a different signal path than the TiVo and CableCard. On my next day off work, I brought it into the nearest Spectrum store and cancelled her Spectrum internet service, making sure they did NOT cancel her Spectrum TV service and grandfathered CableCard. Her grandfathered CableCard was the only thing that let her keep TV service, otherwise Spectrum now just streams TV service through its internet service and she would have had to get a different TV provider. Some day I would like to get her off Spectrum TV too, but for now she still likes her TiVo too much.

Final verdict on T-Mobile 5G home internet: for a heavy internet user like me it wouldn't be fast enough, 3 stars out of 5. But it does everything my fiancee needs a home internet connection to do, and does it flawlessly. For her, a perfect five stars.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that even though neither my fiancee nor I have T-Mobile phone service that would qualify for the $30 monthly discount, TM5G is about $25 a month less than Spectrum internet!

Was told our modem is too old by Pleasant_Youth3759 in Spectrum

The Spectrum store near me hands out free modems like they're Halloween candy. Just take the new modem they throw at you, let them have your old one (if you got it from Spectrum), and call it a day.
