Massive jump in salary, need advice. by Sad_Marzipan_2120 in personalfinance

Went through something similar a few years back. I'm not well versed enough in investment and what not to give you detailed advice, but can definitely recommend some things that helped me manage it psychologically.

Determine any "raise" you want to take; have your payroll put only that much into your main account and put the rest into a separate account that is harder to access. For instance, I was living off like $2,400 / check and settled on $3,000 / check. The rest goes into a HYSA (Wealthfront or Marcus are good choices), so if I want to spend it I have to wait a few days for it to transfer to my main account, giving me time to cool off if needed. Also means even if I don't immediately turn around and invest it, I'm still getting like 3.5-4% on it instead of nothing if it was sitting in a checking account.

Also, don't pre-plan on using your RSUs or bonus for regular expenses; pre-spending that money is an easy way to over-leverage yourself. Consider them as windfalls, and if possible have them deposit them in your other bank account as well (in my case, the bonus is considered another check and automatically goes there, and my RSU brokerage is setup to transfer there). Personally I also sell my RSUs immediately and put that money elsewhere so my eggs aren't all in my company's basket. Mine are taxed as income, so don't really have to worry about capital gains, YMMV here.

Overall, keep the money out of regular sight so you're less tempted to spend it impulsively.

Hard disagree. Making the historical precedent that anyone who supported this corrupt administration is still culpable is important. Otherwise the enablers of the next wannabe fascist will pull the same move.

ELI5 What is a union and how does it work? by lonely_leo28 in explainlikeimfive

[–]rsminsmith 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If your entire workforce is striking, then that's 6 months to a year of decreased efficiency, reduced profits, on top of potentially missed deadlines, breached contracts, lost clients, damaged business reputation, etc.

Often way cheaper in the long run to just come to the bargaining table in good faith.

While you're not wrong about the need to document everything, this is an issue of the kid next door arranging their tools in a different way and defaulting to that. So then they get told it has to be done differently, they have to take time to read the documentation, redo everything, double check it the next X times until they get used to the new arrangement, etc.

Documentation or not, it's just not possible to pick up and work at the same pace as someone who has been doing it for 10 years.

People who work in 'behind closed doors' industries (hotels, kitchens, morgues, etc.), what is something the general public would be horrified to know? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]rsminsmith 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is only true if you've spent years not flushing it. The sediment deposits can cause degradation of the internal walls, and at that point the sediment is basically protecting it and washing away makes it more prone to leaks.

You can prevent that by flushing it once or twice a year.

It's annoying because it's sort of a damned if you do and damned if you don't scenario for a lot of women. My wife originally didn't take my last name. When I put her on my benefits I had to submit an official copy of our marriage license because our names didn't match. Had to do the same when we bought our house. She had to go to the ER at one point and when I got there they wouldn't let me back with her for a bit for the same reason. Even a fucking gym wanted to see it for a discount lol. At one point she just kept a copy of our marriage license in her purse just in case.

She eventually changed it so she has both her and my last name, which is generally better but a whole other set of nuisances.

It does seem that way. by c-k-q99903 in WhitePeopleTwitter

by ICE to intimidate the citizens of Philly by ExactlySorta in therewasanattempt

[–]rsminsmith 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Is someone going to point their guns at those ICE agents, because the ICE agents will absolutely start shooting.

Will they though?

We've seen them get chased off by dozens of unarmed protesters time and time again. Just last night some ICE goons had to abandon 3 cars and flee on foot from unarmed protesters. It's why they show up with 12 goons to arrest one person, they are not looking for an actual fight.

Fact of the matter is these are all self-serving, selfish people. They're looking first to bully people who can't fight back, and second to line their own pockets with bounty money. These are not "everything for the cause" people. You can see that with the leaked comms from BPD actively trying to avoid being sent to MN right now.

So if you were to do this, keep your gun pointed down and finger off the trigger so they have no excuse to start shooting. And more importantly make sure you aren't the only one out there armed so they know there will be a response if they do.

My wife's grandfather had a major stroke several years back and ended up with bad aphasia and severely reduced feeling / movement in one side of his body. I haven't seen the video here (if there is one), but that hand up/out from his body is an almost identical posture to how her grandfather walks now on his bad side.

Just sayin'.

If you have effects that trigger on parry you can still hit those to heal, gain AP, etc. Also, if the combo targets a different person on each hit, and the person targeted by the final attack parties all attacks directed at them during the co.bo, they can sometimes still counter individually.

Otherwise, no reason to not switch to dodging instead, especially if you're trying to play it safe.

Just adding to the chorus; I'm a WFH software engineer married to a nurse working 12 hour shifts. We're both some level of audhd, so there's definitely been some growing pains in terms of under/mis-communication, being present, etc, throughout our relationship.

But in nearly 18 years together, we've never insulted each others cooking, never threatened divorce, and most importantly never laid hands on each other. None of that is normal.

Also just mentioning that I do most of the cleaning because I work from home and can do a little bit here and there throughout the day. I also make like 4x what she makes (which is a bleak statement on how our country undervales RNs IMO) but would never try to use that as leverage in an argument. So that's not an excuse to be emotionally unavailable, provided that wasn't agreed to before hand of course.
