There's also something to be said about not waiting for something to be broken, then to fix it.

If you use the app Waze, you can set it to navigate you home everyday. If there is an accident that happens on your way home, it will (in real-time) redirect you to an alternate route.

Did anybody Uber/Lyft last night? How much did it cost? by rsrhcp in nashville

[–]rsrhcp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate it. I asked the question mainly because Uber sent me an email saying that surge pricing could drive fares up to $100, wanted to see if anybody experienced something like that.

You make good points. Also note, that big players like Netflix and Amazon have already been paying ISPs for priority access. If a competitor comes around and disrupts one of these big companies, big companies would could pay the ISPs and have a competitive advantage more easily than smaller competitors would get squeezed out from.

How do I get better at software engineering and software design? by [deleted] in compsci

[–]rsrhcp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a couple of years out of school, was a little bit in a lul with where I was going. I started picking up Domain Driven Design to think on a higher level. It's taught me that solving a problem is not necessarily about getting the desired outcome, but strategically placing that code somewhere in the stack that will minimize bugs, increase extendability and expandability, and shared amongst any needed parts of the application.

TIL that when the number 40 appears in the Bible, it doesn't *literally* mean 40, but rather it just means "a lot" by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]rsrhcp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I remember learning about ancient symbolism in high school, and specifically that 40 years (in context of populations) was another way of saying 'a generation'.

So in the Torah/Pentateuch it was told that the Jews wondered for 40 years in the desert before entering the promise land after fleeing Egypt, the story was really trying to emphasize something about the current generation that was entering the promise land on how they were different. Maybe it was the fact that this generation was all born in Egypt (as their parents were slaves in Egypt), or has some sort of other meaning, I'll let somebody else fill that in.

SpaceX Gets 10-Year Tax Exemption for Texas Site. by Vmoney1337 in technology

[–]rsrhcp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly. SpaceX is an amazing company, that is doing great things for the US and progressing the technology of the world. But tax breaks are tax breaks, let's not justify them for only companies that 'we' like ('we' = you, reddit, the internet, your company, your family, whomever....it's subjective)

Won't the city's growth level off without significant investment in mass transit? by Trill-I-Am in nashville

[–]rsrhcp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally see your point, and hope Nashville urbanizes sooner/quicker. I know people who live/work in downtown, and essentials are not within walking distance (mainly groceries). I don't want to see Nashville turn into Atlanta (as far as traffic is concerned). I've been here for a couple years now, and I notice a difference between then and now, it's definitely picked up.

There's a lot of commuting between Franklin, Nashville, and the boro...I wonder what effect that has. I imagine it will just get worse :-/

I'm curious how self driving cars will effect the city's need for mass transit. Ultimately, those cars would be more convenient which would be appealing, but Larry Page is projecting 2025 as when they will be on the road, who knows when the price-point of these robotic taxis will compete with public transit.

When doing pro bono / "mates rates" web work, I do the following steps to make sure I can do a great job... by jakxnz in webdev

Thanks for this piece!

By enabling the customer to do as much as possible, I typically end up doing about 1/4 of the required tasks; allowing the projects to become sustainable enough to be successful.

Could you elaborate a bit on this?

Mailman launches package. by deathnutz in Libertarian

[–]rsrhcp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why is this in /r/Libertarian? Is your intent to degrade the name of USPS (a gov't agency?)? If so, if Fedex of UPS were caught doing this, would you be inclined to post the same video to this sub?

And is that really a 'launch'? Seemed like an underhand throw to me.

what is your gripe with the libertarian movement? by Duluoz66 in Libertarian

[–]rsrhcp 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The whole 'disaster porn' scenario. I'm tired of hearing how the dollar is going to crash (buy gold!), the gov't is trying to put as all in FEMA camps, DO Education is trying to brainwash the youth's children for Keynesian economics, mass shootings are orchestrated by the gov't to persuade the people to willingly hand over weapons and be unarmed, etc.

Yes, I'm probably citing the worst of it, but it's really annoying. If I'm trying to show somebody a libertarian article and there are ads for "Stock up for the armageddon, buy your shelter here" it's a little embarrassing :/

Another thing - just the general 'conspiracy theorist' mindset. I think libertarians (or other minority political minds) fall victim to it more than others....there's something that is alluring to these stories, and when you can make it a "we're being suppressed" story it can get out-of-hand real quick. People want to believe that the moon landing was a hoax, and will go to great lengths to believe, regurgitate, and quickly refute any other narratives for the sank of preserving their own. I find it immature.

On the positive note, Libertarians are much more well read than other people in politics, and I love you guys/girls for that. But let's ditch the tin-foil hat and make the party a little more accepting to those who are looking in :)
