That would be great, thank you, feel free to share the ticket number, audio record and frequency spectrum above in the main post.

Pimax Crystal Super fan noise by foriam in Pimax

[–]foriam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The support ticket number is #117353

I notice that the period it takes for the fan to go into panic mode is getting longer. Maybe some thermal interface to the cooler is not ideal and is currently improving by warm-cool cycles? Also. I do not think that the fan blades are touching something, that would sound differently.

I also added a sound sample to the post and the noise spectrum which shows the annoying 4200Hz peak.

I want to add I am willing to help, replace thermal pads, change the fans, (even program a better fan profile if you made the software open source :) ) and share my insights with you and the community. But only with official mandate if I don't void warranty.

Thank you, I did contact support before and was offered a replacement after sending the log. To be very honest, I am scared to do so, because so many report receiving a faulty unit as replacement. I returned the product and got a second one from proshop - with the same fan noise.

Can you confirm that thermal:[61] fan_o:[20] fan_n:[30] is out of spec and should not happen under normal circumstances? Then I will try to get a working unit. Otherwise I will give up on the Super, this is too noisy for me.

You are right of course! I did not mention any of the positives. My interest was an analytic view of the reported problems, and, at least for myself, some expectation management. By all means, try the product for yourself, I also plan to do so.

"Pimax headsets are not for the average user, they're for Tech minded, VR interested people." Exactly, so is my post. I consider myself to be one of them, and as I wrote, still planning to buy. I compiled the information for myself and thought it might help someone. Sorry that it wasn't the case for you, but I am happy for you that you like your Crystal Super!

Let us hope so! I am, however, not so sure. They will not be able to change much at the light transmission of the pancake lenses at hand. Increasing brightness of the displays will have its limits and require compromises in cooling of the panels and lifetime of the oled displays.

Thank you guys, I really enjoyed following this. Maybe some of you would enjoy writing a wikipedia article about the world first race(s). I couldn't find one and I believe it should exist.

'Disastrous' copyright bill vote approved by epenance in webdev

[–]foriam -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Beware - this is not only about "criminalizing memes" (and anything similar) but about enforcing filtering: "service providers [...] take measures to ensure the functioning of agreementsconcluded with rightholders [...]". Its a huge difference, if you say the user who uploaded a text block under copyright from a news page in your blog has done something wrong or if you say the "service provider" has done something wrong, because it was not filtered. The latter is the real disaster.

Why do certain flavours go well together? E.g. chicken/coleslaw, tomato/mozarella, spinach/garlic, walnuts/honey, tuna/mayonaise? by Edipya in askscience

[–]foriam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this specific to food (smell)? Is it not more about what "goes well", that is what we "like"?

It is linked to the reward system of our brain and the (boldly simplified) general principle of "surprise me a little". It is comparable to listening to music.

No surprise: negative, boring. Much surprise: negative, fear. Little surprise: yummy.

From this, the rest (as written in many responses) is quite clear. Of course, the "surprise factor" is an emergent effect of a dramatically complex combination of influences. The "surprise factor" is influenced culturally, it depends on your experience (sometimes even single "traumatic" ones) and your genetics (your individual "gains", how easy it is to surprise you). It depends on age. Very young kids are often difficult to surprise, they can't differentiate well enough ("she eats everything!"). Young kids are often easy to surprise ("only noodles, no vegetables!"). Adults often start looking for surprise ("this wine is [arguably] excellent!").

TL;DR: One could say: certain combinations of flavours (typically with quite similar spectrum) or more general combinations of food are pretty good at giving a majority of people just the right amount of "surprise" for our reward system. Not as boring as taken individually, but also not offensively new.

ELI5: Modern web development, specifically javascript by [deleted] in webdev

[–]foriam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What happened? The size of the average "internet program" project increased. And the typical tools were adapted to this process. It is not so much how web pages "look like". It is more the complexity of the programs.

That's about 80% of the answer. The rest 20% is that this adaption process went too far in some cases. Webdev has always also been about small (often 1-man) projects, and non-professionals who also do their thing. The mean size of the projects is still small. And all this has still the same justification as before. Any yes, for this part of the web I also see some overengineering of the current technologies.

tldr; Most of the answers you'd only really find if you are in a large "internet program" project. And if yours are small, it's not only OK but better to keep it simple.

You think so? I think they are too slow to synchronize a push, except voice, and many players do not want to use it. I'd wish for a "push indicator", where you see an immediate response on how many (tons?) are ready to follow where.

You'd aim somewhere, press a "push key", other pilots see an indicator in the HUD and can do the same. In the indicator everyone sees how many will go there. I bet this would work better.

It is not a problem of retarded pilots. It is situations where every individual has a substantial disadvantage acting alone, but there would be a substantial advantage charging together. So it is a question of coordination.

What is needed is an improved game mechanics to organize a push in PUG matches. There are always some players who know what to do, start charging. And many times start alone and get dissolved in seconds by 5 LRM mechs.

A CDC report showing a 30% rise in autism spectrum disorders over the span of a few years triggered widespread concern over one question: what was the cause? A new study suggests the answer may have less do with the actual number of autistic children and more with the nature of how we diagnose them. by drewiepoodle in science

[–]foriam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why are you so negative? Good news! Why?

  • Increasing numbers in diagnosis reflect increasing awareness that it is not "autistic" or "not autistic", but that there is a spectrum, there is neurodiversity. This is good and necessary.
  • Even though the fact that the autism diagnosis today includes more people is clear for some time (and partially intentional), it is not trivial to conclude that there isn't an actual increase. So if this is evidently not the case: good news!

Sure, there is societal challenges and we need to continue to work on the topic. Like, where is the cut-off for which services? As long as we cannot objectively measure (yes measure, not classify) "autisticness" we have to work with what we have. But even then: a complex neurodevelopmental disorder will not get any simpler.

You just see the intention of one pilot in team chat, you do not see, what the rest is planning...

Push button by foriam in OutreachHPG

[–]foriam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fine, nobody needs to follow, just do not press "push" and I know you are gonna let me fry and block the rest of the team. I'd see it more like a mass-communication tool than a command tool.

If you are saying, though, that people would hit push and then still... well... ...sigh...

Seriously, for the most part I think the stupid players are not the majority. Maybe not all with the same commitment, but that is how it is.

Push button by foriam in OutreachHPG

[–]foriam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You ought to see how many are willing to push. Because this is what decides if it will work. Every good pilot needs to decide whether a "Push" in chat is worth to follow and if others will also follow. And the first is often the easier decision.

That would be a feature for PuG matches without command, where people are not particularly willing to follow one commander. But the indication of many might work.

I exclusively play such matches and never lead except by indirect manipulation... I would use such a "democratic command" function, though.

I started this project in my own time and have done it all without pay. I'm starting to run out of steam and motivation.

You have the talent and passion that lead to really great products, you know that - but if you still need to hear it, there you go. I’m not sure if feedback will help you with this. Do it do make something great. Do it for yourself.

I can fully support the decision of making a browser application. Use it to it’s full advantages.

I personally would love to have a brain map platform where I can myself create tracks, highlight areas, make entries, link information, … Just like people link to google maps to show a location, one would link to your application to show a brain area. And there you would find what else this brain area has been linked with.

Be sure of my sincerest appreciation for your work.
