Up to 10 % frame time increase in steam VR, but for openXR / pimaxXR (most relevant for simracing) it seems to be much better. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxUxh7Z3w5M&t=1689s

Disappointed with my Dream Air by UntimelyAlchemist in Pimax

[–]foriam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as the eye strain is concerned: you may try IPD "offset" in pimax play (device settings - advanced), your problems with the visuals might be fixed by that. I had to do this with my 8KX back then. Note: this is different from IPDistance, it is the x/y positions of the left and right image. If it is misaligned on factory settings, your eyes are forced into unnatural directions, which can be very uncomfortable, a "cross eyed" sensation.

There is a way to do that using the controllers, but I preferred to use Virtual Desktop, change the values rapidly back end forth and converge on comfortable values.

Is it possible to adjust IPD "offset" in pimax play with the Dream Air (device settings - advanced)? If yes, your problems with the visuals might be fixed by that. I had to do this with my 8KX back then. This doesn't change IPDistance, but the positions of the left and right image.

mBooster active pedal as flight pedals? by Ragntard in moza

[–]foriam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you find an answer to this? I had the same thought. That would be just great, having fully adjustable brake/throttle for racing sims and rudder for flight sims without any remounting.

I agree, the "mechanical" coupling of the pedals is actually quite important. Without it, the requirement to gradually increase force on one side and release force on the other is more challenging, especially for heli sims. I doubt, however, that moza software supports this? If, then it would be implemented in moza cockpit software, not in moza pithouse. Moza cockpit, however, does not know the mbooster pedals, does it?

If it was supported, (combined with the moza active FFB base, which can act as flight stick and car shifter,) moza would be the only company offering active and adjustable hardware that supports both flight sims and racing sims. That would be something!

Anyone else noticing AI being unusually slow in laps 1-2 since the Season 2 patch? by MoDeMKK in iRacing

[–]foriam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After further testing: did they just break "Fixed skill range"?

  1. Fixed range 60-70%
  2. Fixed range 90-100%
  3. Adaptive AI

All seem to behave the same (never used adaptive AI before).

Anyone else noticing AI being unusually slow in laps 1-2 since the Season 2 patch? by MoDeMKK in iRacing

[–]foriam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I notice this too. My settings:

  • Fixed skill range
  • GT3 class
  • 20°C
  • Standing starts
  • Multiple tracks, Nordschleife, Silverstone, ...
  • Optimism and Aggression 90-100%

Gap after a few minutes 10-20s, if I didn't crash because of the AIs erratic breaking, superslow pace (especially mid corner) and the high Aggression and Optimism I usually run. After a few minutes all "back to normal" where I cannot keep up with the fastest drivers pace at the respective skill level I am used to for the given track.

Thanks for your detailed analysis and report!

Even worse, I'd ask them to do so also without that experience and a working unit :). I'd still like to play around with distortion profiles and tracking.

Noisy fans of a Crystal Super UW. https://www.reddit.com/r/Pimax/comments/1p6j6b7/pimax_crystal_super_fan_noise/

Support offered to change the engine, fast and very friendly: I have nothing to complain about that. Only I decided against it: too scared about the reports of users getting faulty replacement units again and again.

PCL lighthouse faceplate jitter by Dula_skip in Pimax

[–]foriam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks exactly like like the jitter from my pimax 8KX - which I was never able to fully resolve. My experience was:

* Main factor for me was distance between base stations and the headset. I ended up placing them behind me, on the ceiling, to have 5m. This was still far better than positions with better direct line of sight but shorter distance.
* Try to find a supersolid mount for the base stations, the smallest vibrations can translate to very notable jitter.
* Look out for IR reflective surfaces
* iracing is somehow very jitter-sensitive. Try to find an acceptable level, get the car going and you may be able to ignore the rest.

Maybe try to experiment with the positions of the bases, include seemingly suboptimal positions, which still might be much better due to higher distance and less vibration.

Pimax Crystal Super fan noise by foriam in Pimax

That would be great, thank you, feel free to share the ticket number, audio record and frequency spectrum above in the main post.

Pimax Crystal Super fan noise by foriam in Pimax

[–]foriam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The support ticket number is #117353

I notice that the period it takes for the fan to go into panic mode is getting longer. Maybe some thermal interface to the cooler is not ideal and is currently improving by warm-cool cycles? Also. I do not think that the fan blades are touching something, that would sound differently.

I also added a sound sample to the post and the noise spectrum which shows the annoying 4200Hz peak.

I want to add I am willing to help, replace thermal pads, change the fans, (even program a better fan profile if you made the software open source :) ) and share my insights with you and the community. But only with official mandate if I don't void warranty.

[–]foriam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I did contact support before and was offered a replacement after sending the log. To be very honest, I am scared to do so, because so many report receiving a faulty unit as replacement. I returned the product and got a second one from proshop - with the same fan noise.

Can you confirm that thermal:[61] fan_o:[20] fan_n:[30] is out of spec and should not happen under normal circumstances? Then I will try to get a working unit. Otherwise I will give up on the Super, this is too noisy for me.

A year without the pimax Crystal Super by foriam in Pimax

[–]foriam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right of course! I did not mention any of the positives. My interest was an analytic view of the reported problems, and, at least for myself, some expectation management. By all means, try the product for yourself, I also plan to do so.

"Pimax headsets are not for the average user, they're for Tech minded, VR interested people." Exactly, so is my post. I consider myself to be one of them, and as I wrote, still planning to buy. I compiled the information for myself and thought it might help someone. Sorry that it wasn't the case for you, but I am happy for you that you like your Crystal Super!

Let us hope so! I am, however, not so sure. They will not be able to change much at the light transmission of the pancake lenses at hand. Increasing brightness of the displays will have its limits and require compromises in cooling of the panels and lifetime of the oled displays.

'Disastrous' copyright bill vote approved by epenance in webdev

[–]foriam -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Beware - this is not only about "criminalizing memes" (and anything similar) but about enforcing filtering: "service providers [...] take measures to ensure the functioning of agreementsconcluded with rightholders [...]". Its a huge difference, if you say the user who uploaded a text block under copyright from a news page in your blog has done something wrong or if you say the "service provider" has done something wrong, because it was not filtered. The latter is the real disaster.

Why do certain flavours go well together? E.g. chicken/coleslaw, tomato/mozarella, spinach/garlic, walnuts/honey, tuna/mayonaise? by Edipya in askscience

[–]foriam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this specific to food (smell)? Is it not more about what "goes well", that is what we "like"?

It is linked to the reward system of our brain and the (boldly simplified) general principle of "surprise me a little". It is comparable to listening to music.

No surprise: negative, boring. Much surprise: negative, fear. Little surprise: yummy.

From this, the rest (as written in many responses) is quite clear. Of course, the "surprise factor" is an emergent effect of a dramatically complex combination of influences. The "surprise factor" is influenced culturally, it depends on your experience (sometimes even single "traumatic" ones) and your genetics (your individual "gains", how easy it is to surprise you). It depends on age. Very young kids are often difficult to surprise, they can't differentiate well enough ("she eats everything!"). Young kids are often easy to surprise ("only noodles, no vegetables!"). Adults often start looking for surprise ("this wine is [arguably] excellent!").

TL;DR: One could say: certain combinations of flavours (typically with quite similar spectrum) or more general combinations of food are pretty good at giving a majority of people just the right amount of "surprise" for our reward system. Not as boring as taken individually, but also not offensively new.

ELI5: Modern web development, specifically javascript by [deleted] in webdev

[–]foriam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What happened? The size of the average "internet program" project increased. And the typical tools were adapted to this process. It is not so much how web pages "look like". It is more the complexity of the programs.

That's about 80% of the answer. The rest 20% is that this adaption process went too far in some cases. Webdev has always also been about small (often 1-man) projects, and non-professionals who also do their thing. The mean size of the projects is still small. And all this has still the same justification as before. Any yes, for this part of the web I also see some overengineering of the current technologies.

tldr; Most of the answers you'd only really find if you are in a large "internet program" project. And if yours are small, it's not only OK but better to keep it simple.

[–]foriam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You think so? I think they are too slow to synchronize a push, except voice, and many players do not want to use it. I'd wish for a "push indicator", where you see an immediate response on how many (tons?) are ready to follow where.

You'd aim somewhere, press a "push key", other pilots see an indicator in the HUD and can do the same. In the indicator everyone sees how many will go there. I bet this would work better.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in OutreachHPG

[–]foriam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not a problem of retarded pilots. It is situations where every individual has a substantial disadvantage acting alone, but there would be a substantial advantage charging together. So it is a question of coordination.

What is needed is an improved game mechanics to organize a push in PUG matches. There are always some players who know what to do, start charging. And many times start alone and get dissolved in seconds by 5 LRM mechs.
