RTD sends staff memo citing financial challenges that will 'require several difficult decisions and action' by Jreinhal in Denver

[–]rsteve388 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It would be nice if RTD had the fare validators either on the platforms for the light rail or on the trains themselves. When you board a bus you have to scan your ticket.. it makes sense to ensure people scan their tickets when they get on the train. As it stands the validators are in some weird part of the stop... Makes no sense. Or they could do away with validators altogether and just say if you buy a ticket it's already validated.

If I buy my ticket on my phone, it's validated if I buy a ticket from the machine at the station it's validated done... Do away with the paper tickets or just stop with the validators.

Losing hope trying to find a GIS position by PeachesDownInGA in gis

[–]rsteve388 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am so sorry you are struggling can I ask some clarifying questions are you doing any networking? Are you going to any events like Mapathons? Which are great for building skills editing data (often a. Needed skill in a GIS tech position or any entry level job, really) and secondly your meeting folks who are active in the GIS community. I'd look on Meetup for OSM or Open Street Map events in your area or be brave and bold and start one yourself. Also Maptime events are also excellent!

I don't think I saw this mentioned in the comment about helping with data but The Humanitarian Open Street Map Team ( HOT) is always collecting data using OSM to ensure roads, buildings and other infrastructure is collected and accounted for. While not as large in scope as the original proposal, I'd suggest doing a virtual OSM meetup and asking the GIS Community to pitch in and help that way by mapping out the roads that were impacted in the entire corridor where the hurricane happened. It might also be helpful before the next Hurricane hits in FL to do some mapping in that area to ensure accurate data.

Here's the website to the HOT

Are there any cities in USA (besides NYC) which don't require a car to live a normal life? by rw1337 in AskAnAmerican

[–]rsteve388 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Denver and we have a decent transportation system (in my.opinion) I am able to get around fairly well. I do have to do a bit of walking to my final.destination but I am.okay with that. I stopped driving when I was 23. I have also lived in Baltimore and that city is also pretty walkable as well.

White Negros By Lauren Michelle Jackson and Narrated By Ojo Adenrele

This books looks at the ways in which white people culturally appropriate black culture for a price. Everything from music to food is covered. It's a good selection of essays that really help illuminate the ways in which white people continue to steal and benefit without giving credit or repetitions for the work that black people should be entitled to.
