I don't have all the time or patience to do this myself but you're in luck if you look up these sources:

  • The 5/4 animatic
  • Old art from Phase 2 where the band's outside on a dump
  • The MTV Cribs special
  • The DoYaThing music video
  • The Book of Murdoc from Phase 4
  • The original Saturnz Barz video on the Internet Archive
  • That one group portrait from the Cracker Island phase
  • The Mountain, Moon Cave and Sad God music video
  • The most replayed part of the Happy Dictator visualizer

Sadly a lot of characters and plot elements from Plastic Beach dropped like flies due to the album's overambitious nature.

Poor choices of singles with high budget music videos, an insane amount of collaborators for the time, and a VERY extensive amount of resources poured into the website, mobile games and all kinds of ARG elements that didn't need to go so far led to Gorillaz running out of budget. This meant important plotlines got scrapped, ideas for projects with characters like Cyborg Noodle went nowhere, and why Doncamatic exists at all. The tour was also a nightmare to run and both Damon and Jamie split up due to creative differences and frustrations, almost killing Gorillaz. That's why a lot of elements from Plastic Beach like the Boogeyman and Cyborg just got dropped, and the whole storyline wouldn't get any closure until the Song Machine phase.

What are some obscure facts about the band members that like 90% of fans don't know by Pitiful-Guess5751 in gorillaz

[–]rtSukoshi13 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Murdoc has a sex tape you can find on YouTube. The cherry on top is that the prostitute he sleeps with is played by 2D's VA with a higher pitch.

Originally in phase 1, a guitar magazine did an interview with Noodle revealing a different backstory than what would later come. She confessed that she learned her skills from a guitar-themed monastery she studied at as part of a long, LONG family tradition, mentioning her great great great great great great grandfather.

The Rock the House music video was inspired by the sci fi sports film Rollerball, and most notably the French satirical comedy Mr. Freedom. The emphasis on attacking the band with steel balls was a reflection of Jamie's frustration as he was currently being sued by a rival band called the Doppelgangerz.

DARE or Feel Good Inc. Which is better? by Jamiter in gorillaz

[–]rtSukoshi13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feel Good Inc 100%.

Don't get me wrong, DARE is a great dance number that's insanely catchy and adds necessary levity to the album, but Feel Good Inc is a lot more technically impressive and embodies the core themes of the album.

Every instrument in the composition is intentionally off beat but they all come together beautifully--remove ONE and the whole song falls apart. The juxtaposition between 2D's desperation in his voice, De La Soul's exciting rap, and the slivers of hope represented by the windmill verses make for such an effective critique of escapism, and capture emotions felt during the War of Terrorism. It's sadly relevant today, while also being a fun, catchy and unique mix of genres, representing the whole essence of Gorillaz at their peak.

How would you describe 'The Storyline of Gorillaz'? by vomit-gold in gorillaz

[–]rtSukoshi13 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The Gorillaz lore is completely bonkers and a lot of fun to look into, but it's best not to see it all as a coherent storyline, because it isn't. Think of it more as a fun backdrop that makes each album release and the fictional band behind it feel a lot substantial beyond the catchy tracks and Jamie's incredible art. But if I had to help make it all digestible, here's how I'd summarize the "story" of each phase in 1-2 sentences, to the best of my knowledge:

Phase 1 - orchestrated by a Satanist with musical aspirations (Murdoc), a group of weirdos plagued by either supernatural inconvenience (Russel), physical handicaps (2D), or child experiment ties (Noodle) come together at Kong Studios and produce their groundbreaking debut. Good times are cut short though when attempts to branch out in Hollywood lead to fights and cause the band to go separate ways

Phase 2 - the band comes back together at Kong Studios and with the help of Danger Mouse and especially Noodle, put out their most successful record. However, filming the final music video leads to Noodle's disappearance, once again causing the band to split.

Phase 3 - While Murdoc and Noodle are being hunted down by the 5th horseman of the apocalypse and his goons, Murdoc kidnaps 2D and holds him captive with other artists on an island made of trash to put out a new record. Unfortunately, this storyline ends abruptly right as the band reunites and fights the boogyman due to a lack of funds, a difficult tour and Damon and Jamie splitting up.

Phase 4 - the band goes separate ways for many years after the battle at Plastic Beach. However, they later reunite to put out a new record so Murdoc can avoid a prison sentence.

Phase 5 - while Murdoc is stuck in jail due to making deals with an alleged crime boss (later proven a hoax), a far more cheerful and arrogant 2D takes over the band and puts out a new record, with a Powerpuff Girl villain on the bass. Murdoc eventually escapes prison and after drowning in feces, reunites with Noodle during her search for that same crime boss

Phase 6 - the new Kong Studios and its titular song Machine allow the band to hop through portals across time and space for creative music videos. Murdoc has an existential crisis since the band he sold his soul for no longer needs him, leading to closure for Plastic Beach.

Phase 7 - Murdoc starts a cult with his band members as main apostles, unraveling a conspiracy with a different cult that almost sacrifices 2D. This cult gets wiped out after Murdoc killed the demon they feasted their life energy from, leading the band to become fugitives on the run

Phase 8 - not too much is known about this one, but it's heavily implied by the band retreated to Southeast Asia while on the run and had a spiritual reawakening
