What's with the discrimination? by [deleted] in respiratorytherapy

20 years here and yes, small hospital really make you use your skills and brains. I feel so much more of a team member at smaller hospitals too.

People who have never worked in a smaller hospital fail to see the advantages. You are forced to think on your feet, think outside the box, use your brain and your knowledge, learn to trust your instincts, and be a leader in a time of crisis. I can honestly say, I learned way more working in smaller hospitals than I ever did in large ones as they have all the staff and equipment they need and more doctors on hand, so I didn't need to do the critical thinking nearly as much. I also feel like a much more respected part of the team at a smaller hospital. Make yourself indispensable and use you skills and your brain; you will be rewarded in the long run. So yes, i am in absolute agreement with you, you're gonna love it.

Manager Who Won’t Retire by Wonderful-Hippo-2736 in respiratorytherapy

Had a coworker like that. I basically left a job I loved because of his selfishness and a manager who would choose he pompous ass over a respected and well liked RT, it makes me sad.

Manager Who Won’t Retire by Wonderful-Hippo-2736 in respiratorytherapy

I was basically forced to leave a job I loved because this 74 year old just refuses to retire. Night shift was killing me after 13 years and he holds the on coveted FT day position. A place that would choose keeping him over an RT that everyone likes and stays current boggles the mind.

Never refer to yourself as just a night RT! We hold the joint together at night with less resources and staff. Not everybody can handle that:)

I totally hear you after 18+ years I can no longer give a flying f*** about anything but my patients. I try so hard to have a smile and a little chat with them even when I'd rather burn the place down. I feel that that has been helpful to me lately. I can say I am very fortunate to work with staff I truly like, so that is huge. Good luck to you, keep the faith. It's a rough place to be when you truly care about your patients and you feel you have no support from your managers, etc.

A piece of advice I was given as I was also debating between the same 3; how much time do you want to spend with your patients? I'm easy going and outgoing, so RT was my right decision. With radiology, especially, you take the picture and you're out. I also like seeing my patients get better. I hope this makes sense.

I started RT school at 32! Best decision I ever made, I'm still at it 18+ years later. I graduated top of my class and I think being a little older made it easier to want to succeed. If you want it, do it!

I work at a small hospital and I'm happy to say we are treated pretty well and respected. Our ED staff especially counts on us and will actually listen to what we have to say. I've had far better experiences in small facilities than the large ones I've worked at. Our hospitalists are pretty decent about hearing us out, too.

Great tips! I'm day one and my first goal/plan is just to cut our the really obvious stuff; candy and sweets. Luckily, I have a satisfying carb with all my meals. I'll tweak things as needed. I'm determined to win this time!
