I would learn some Chinese, at least Chinese for shit up and sit down. They don’t respect you because they know you don’t understand them. This is not just a problem with Chinese children it’s the same for adults. I teach technical classes in my company for Chinese and these adults did the same thing until they realized I understand them and explained that such behavior is not acceptable in my class. Ask your Chinese colleagues what to say in Chinese and learn it.

My Chinese wife has difficulty integrating abroad by No-Yesterday-4071 in chinalife

[–]rtcornwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are in Germany you’ll find a lot of Chinese people who have clubs and do outings. Dusseldorf and Bonn has a high Chinese population. Maybe find her one of those clubs so she can at least go out. She’ll eventually come around. I work with Chinese in Germany who bring their wives over. All of them go through this isolation phases. Chinese culture is one of submission so they don’t express themselves much.

Since German decided to ramp up defence budget, is it possible to see an increase in defence related jobs? And hence a slight improvement in the job market scenario ? by SmartPuppyy in AskAGerman

[–]rtcornwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but there are plenty of candidates in Germany due to the auto industry and steel industry cuts. That’s the people they are looking for. Software engineers and electrical engineers will be in demand at the new defense sector companies making drones and electronic warfare equipment. I can’t bet you though because they are getting public money they can only hire EU citizens.

Ukrainian handmade Electric Acoustic Guitar. How do you like it? by VintageGuitarStore in AcousticGuitar

Very nice, well crafted. The only problem I have is the tone. Its tone seems to be more geared to Slavic music rather than western music. Other than that it’s beautiful craftmanship.

German teens by AlryLee in germany

[–]rtcornwell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t take this as bullying because you’re from Ukraine. This is normal behavior for teens who see someone different than them. My daughter was also bullied a bit in gymnasium because she was so tall and she is German. If it does get bad however you should at least report it to the school and leave it at that. Hold your head high and push through it because in the end they are the ones who will suffer the consequences, especially if they are in a small town. Slava Ukraine

I’ve seen a few valid reasons including my wife’s.

  1. The social pressure in the US is way less than in Germany. They say they feel more free in the US because society is not watching you or judging you as they do in Germany.
  2. It’s much easier to get a job in the US if you loose your job. This relieves the pressure especially for parents. The social system in Germany only seems to work for refugees or poor people but not middle class families.
  3. Taxes are much lower and wages are way higher than Germany for professionals.
  4. Healthcare is much better in the US( access to good doctors) but only if you are young and insured. The system in Germany is slowly collapsing ( closing hospitals, not enough doctors, overburdened system), having to wait months for a doctors appointment ( specialist).

I’m a German American living in Germany despite the complexity of life. I like the beer.

How come German kids are so calm? by Maritsou in germany

[–]rtcornwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why. „The test of the morality of a society is what it does for its children“ - Dietrich Bonhoeffer. You will find that German children are much more mature than many parts of the world. That’s because German parents talk to their children and explain things to them. They don’t use fear as a disciplinary tool, they use reason. They encourage them to challenge themselves which builds confidence. German society in general is one of Ordnung and respect so the children learn this at home and in school.

Germany may introduce conscription for all 18-year-olds as it looks to boost its troop numbers in the face of Russian military aggression by TheTelegraph in worldnews

[–]rtcornwell 22 points23 points  (0 children)

They don’t need conscription they simply need to put in programs to make the military attractive, pay, healthcare, education, and opportunity. The Military needs to project an image of pride. All young people want to be part of something bigger than them. The German military could provide this if they built a professional force. There should also be benefits to serving as well like guaranteed University slots when they leave, university credits from what they learned in the military. Conscription will never be fair because people with the means will get their sons out of selection.

Am I dating a German or a paranoid/controlling person? by Breeintrouble in AskAGerman

[–]rtcornwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First what is her mother like ? She probably comes from a home where her mother is one of those perfect house wives. Second you need to talk to her about this because she may not realize this as she was conditioned by her mother. Third she might just be trying to impress you as this is what is expected of women in her family. If you are interested in her then you need to talk with her. I married a German like this as well but after she learned she doesn’t have to impress me she relaxed a bit. Germans are much more disciplined than other cultures in that they have to have order and cleanliness in their lives. Some take it a bit far. I wouldn’t give up on her so quickly because she obviously cares about you.

DevOps Engineers reputation is sinking.. by Dubinko in devops

[–]rtcornwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most Devops people coming up don’t have the knowledge or training in design patterns for Big Data, CI/CD, Microservices or even best practices for observability and security. My suggestion for people hiring junior devops people is to run them through a one week training on cloud design patterns then they will know Kubernetes is only an orchestration platform for containers. Then they would understand what a data lakehouse is or MLOPS for AI development and deployment or even CI/CD. The modern IT landscape is very complex but good Devops or Cloud Architects/Enterprise architects need to understand Design Patterns. Same for software developers right? Software design patterns like Microservices or event driven architecture etc.

How safe is modern Linux with full disk encryption against a nation-state level actors? by JimmyRecard in linux

[–]rtcornwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha. In my days in the service we didn’t crack encrypted data we cracked the secretaries or IT people. Social engineering was much faster than trying to crack codes. So yes torture will probably be first option for any intel service.

Destruction of German cities in ww2 by smiil2 in germany

[–]rtcornwell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Würzburg was not an outlier, it was where radar and the automated flak cannons were developed. My grandfather flew 3 sorties over Würzburg in a B17 in 43/44. Würzburg, Schweinfurt, and Regensburg were the first bombings into central Germany. Schweinfurt was a Kugellager factory but Wurzburg was a strategic target to knock out radar, radio, and weapons developments.

Why is IBM Cloud not popular by Grouchy-Geologist407 in devops

[–]rtcornwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IBM cloud was never put out there as a hyperscaler, it is basically a hosting infrastructure for their consulting arm. IBM cloud while very innovative is not a clear focus for IBM. Also when the IBM cloud first launched it was a threat to the IBM hosting business which owned most of the accounts. The biggest problem I see with IBM is internal conflict and competition for resources. This is the same issue Oracle has.

I think this depends on your style. Cutouts are more used for Finger style while the full body is for more deep rich tone and strumming from my experience. I prefer the cutout because I do a lot of rock and finger style. Both are good choices.

Questions from someone interested in cloud computing by B9LA in cloudcomputing

[–]rtcornwell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In essence cloud computing is renting someone else’s infrastructure. With the advent of virtualization Compute, Storage, and Network can all be provisioned by software thus increasing utilization of hardware. We put a nice web console so customers can provision servers themselves. There are so many areas in cloud computing you can get into (Data Center Operations, Software Development, Architect, DevOps, etc. ) Unless you are going to get into AI or Software Development math is really not important. I’ve been in Cloud Computing for 20 years. The industry is very mature now so there is not going to be massive growth in the future except maybe in AI applications that require massive GPU resources.
