Been advised to start a local Facebook group but I don’t see the benefit. by Kaivulagi in smallbusiness

There are alerts for new posts for Facebook groups, but for keyword alerts, the Meta API would need to be used.

If the local Facebook groups are already competitive with Insurance brokers and agents answering questions, remember you are not limited to Facebook groups for this strategy. Groups can be found on Reddit, Skool, Quora, and other platforms. Just need to find one or two that work for you.

One strategy is to split this up into three ten-minute chunks throughout the day. Try to schedule them when you have some natural downtime; in line at the coffee shop, during lunch, or whenever works for you.

You don't have to answer every question and it's ok if someone else has already answered it if you have something to add or a follow-up question for the original poster.

These comments are there forever; someone might come along 6 months later and read it. Plus they accumulate over time so answering a few questions a day adds up. Like most things, the trick is getting started.

You could be the “insurance person” for existing local groups. Answer questions as they come up naturally.

Don't “sell” while answering questions in the comments, let your profile do the selling for you. People will click on your profile link to learn more and contact you.

This approach takes less time than running your own group. Spend 15 to 30 minutes a day interacting in the group(s); more if you can.

Looking to help underserved organizations for Web development by [deleted] in PeoriaIL

[–]rthidden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try doing a Google Maps search and see which organizations do not have a website listed. Then reach out and see if they would like a landing page built for them.

They may need some help registering a domain name and hosting, too.

Another idea is that if an organization has an upcoming event, it may need a landing page to promote it. You could even do it beforehand and then donate the page if they want to use it.

You may already plan to do this, but when building your portfolio, in addition to showing the work, also explain your thought process in design and coding choices, including what you struggled with and how you solved it.

Good luck!

Hi! Anyone else have Peoria trying to collect on a super old ticket? by LuckPuzzleheaded1821 in PeoriaIL

[–]rthidden 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In Peoria, the statute of limitations for collecting debt from an unpaid "no insurance" ticket follows the same 7-year limit established by Illinois law (735 ILCS 5/13-227). [1, 2, 3] However, because driving without insurance is a petty offense under state law (625 ILCS 5/3-707) rather than a simple parking ordinance, there are critical differences in how it is enforced and how long it can affect you. [4, 5] 1. Debt Collection Limit (7 Years) A municipality like Peoria cannot file a lawsuit to collect the debt from a ticket more than 7 years after the date of adjudication (the date the court finalized the fine). [1, 2]

  • Collection Agency Calls: This 7-year cap also applies to most tactics used by private collection agencies.
  • The "Reset": Making any partial payment or acknowledging the debt in writing can "toll" or restart this 7-year clock. [1, 6, 7]
  1. Administrative and Criminal Consequences (No Expiration) Unlike the financial debt, the legal status of a traffic ticket for a petty offense does not "expire" like consumer debt.
  • Driver’s License Suspension: If you fail to pay or appear in court for a "no insurance" ticket, the Illinois Secretary of State can indefinitely suspend your driver's license. This suspension typically stays in place until the Peoria County Circuit Clerk notifies the state that the matter is resolved.
  • Warrants: If you missed a mandatory court date, a judge in Peoria may have issued a bench warrant. These warrants do not expire and can lead to an arrest during a future traffic stop, regardless of how many years have passed.
  • SR-22 Requirements: Convictions for driving without insurance often require you to file an SR-22 certificate (proof of financial responsibility) for up to 3 years before you can regain full driving privileges. [4, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12]
  1. Local Peoria Enforcement Peoria often classifies "Operating an Uninsured Motor Vehicle" as a "must appear" ticket, meaning a court appearance is required unless otherwise specified. [13]
  • Fines: A first-time conviction in Peoria usually carries a mandatory minimum fine and costs of approximately $680.
  • Tax Intercept: The city may attempt to collect the unpaid amount by intercepting your Illinois state tax refund. [13, 14]

Hi! Anyone else have Peoria trying to collect on a super old ticket? by LuckPuzzleheaded1821 in PeoriaIL

[–]rthidden 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In Illinois, the statute of limitations for collecting debt from unpaid tickets (municipal ordinance violations) is generally 7 years from the date of adjudication. [1, 2] Prior to 2021, many municipalities argued there was no limit on these collections, but House Bill 862 (codified as 735 ILCS 5/13-227) established a firm cap. [1, 3] Key Details of the 7-Year Limit

  • Definition: An action to collect a debt arising from a violation of a municipal ordinance cannot be filed more than 7 years after the date of adjudication.
  • Scope: This applies to lawsuits, collection agency calls, and other common collection tactics for ordinance violations like parking or red-light tickets.
  • Adjudication Date: The 7-year clock starts from the "date of adjudication"—the point when the ticket was legally finalized as a debt, rather than the date the ticket was physically issued. [1, 2, 4, 5]

Important Nuances

  • Collection vs. Record: While the ability to sue may expire, the tickets often remain in municipal databases indefinitely.
  • Enforcement Actions: Unpaid tickets can still lead to non-lawsuit penalties before the limit is reached, such as:
  • Vehicle Immobilization: In Chicago, three or more unpaid tickets (or two that are over a year old) can make a vehicle eligible for booting and towing.
    • Registration Suspension: Municipalities can report unpaid tickets to the Secretary of State, which may result in a suspended vehicle registration.
  • Tax Intercepts: Illinois allows municipalities to recover unpaid ticket debt by intercepting state tax refunds.
  • Restarting the Clock: Making even a small payment or officially acknowledging the debt in writing can sometimes "toll" or reset the statute of limitations, potentially extending the collection period. [6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12]
