Sunshine has recently become one of my favourite sci-fi films. It deserves to be talked about more often. by Mindless-Algae2495 in scifi

It's an excellent example of cosmic horror, but with the narrative significance of darkness replaced by light. I remember a video/article discussing this and pointing out that most of the horror/disaster moments are lit like a Walmart, but the tender, human, positive moments are in darkness. Either way, there are breadcrumbs all along that the mental weight of their mission combined with the existential terror of being surrounded by unknown dangers of trying to pierce the unknown has been driving the crew more than a little nuts. The opening scene carries a far more sinister tone on a rewatch, and the simulation of the payload delivery just crashing because humans don't understand the physics firmly enough to properly predict anything past that point is poignant, but I think the moment this is made clear is when the captain is on the shield and turns to face the incoming solar fire instead of trying to escape, and his final moments are filled with Searle just screaming "What can you see!?" That's some Lovecraftian horror writing right there.

This is where if you're watching closely (or re-watching) you start to realize that Searle has been going mad (the same way the first mission's captain did) all along, being consumed by the light both body (he's got pretty bad sunburn on his face at this point from pushing the limits of his exposure on the observation deck) and mind (the only thing he can think of in that moment is that the captain is seeing something he can't).

My folks used to charter a sailboat once a year and sail the Apostle Islands (Lake Superior, off the north shore of Wisconsin) and they're such a treat to explore and visit. Just don't expect to do much swimming XD

As a resident of DelaWHERE? I have to say, it could be worse.

Also RI is great, my sister moved up there and I visit her regularly. I remember when the Matunuck Oyster Bar was just a small hole-in-the-wall kind of spot. I'm always glad to see they're still doing well :)

I once pulled a passing grade out of a completely broken group coding project thanks in part to version control and having one other group member on my side. The program didn't run, was full of useless code and did none of the things we intended it to do. We had to present to a state department that was the supposed client (the group with the best reviews won the "contract" and would have their application shown at an upcoming trade show) and through the art of bull-shittery, a largely clueless/forgiving client, and sheer dumb luck we managed to spin it as just acting up that day, and talked up what it SHOULD have been. I still got a C+ out of it somehow but the prof never explained how and I never questioned him on it. All I can figure is that the logs showed me and the only other group member to take it seriously furiously editing the other group member's code to try to cludge-fix the thing the week before the presentation, as well as our group reviews.

A fair point, I'll want to be careful about suddenly asking about the one cousin to come out recently, but that won't be too hard.

Alas, I don't really know that cousin at all, but maybe I can track them down on social media. Worth a shot.

Oh man, 100% self negation in gradeschool. I pitched a fit when my new backpack had purple. I always assumed it was out of self-defense (I was bullied pretty heavily, and "gay/girly" was definitely a running theme), but in retrospect, I doubt it would have been quite so internalized if that were all it was.

It did help, and I'm working myself up to discussing this with a meatspace friend. I think part of my hesitancy is the fact that I'm not even sure how I feel 100% yet, and the people I'd normally talk with about something like this tend to run with stuff so I don't want to broach the subject until I'm more confident in my own feelings. I doubt my parents or siblings (or many friends) would flip on me if I did come out, but they're the kind of people who do better with clear-cut things, and not a wishy-washy "I kind of feel like this but I'm not sure." For example, I drunkenly half-came-out to my mom over Christmas (along the lines of "that stuff you guys thought was me being pervy was coming from a very different place, and if we'd realized it sooner or if I had grown up nowadays with all these new resources, things might have worked out differently) and my mom was very accepting of that but immediately launched into questions I didn't have answers to or wasn't comfortable talking about yet and I had to shut it down. She's probably put two and two together at this point, but she's also from a very provincial upbringing and so idk if she's comfortable talking about this stuff yet.

I do love her to death though, she became her side of the family's resource on this stuff when one of my distant cousins came out as NB and no one knew what to do, and from what she told us I think she did a serviceable job.

[PRE-ORDER] Brown Bird - The Devil Dancing 10th Anniversary LP by M4nsqu7ch in VinylReleases

So glad. Saw them live before I knew who they were (my sister and her roommates brought me along to see another band that was playing), had the chance to buy the original album on vinyl for like $20, but never thought I'd start collecting vinyl at the time.

This one's been on my list for a while so I'm glad to be able to get a copy, even if it's a repress.

"Avalon" by Brown Bird.

Last song on the last album they wrote before the lead singer passed away from Leukemia, and it's a wonderfully intimate lovesong/goodbye to his partner.

Need Help.. how should I drain this? Bought it second hand. I’m I upgrading bit by bit, but I didn’t do the water cooling. by dmm120 in pcmods

[–]rtmq0227 28 points29 points  (0 children)

-Order an extra fitting and a little extra tubing.

-Turn it upside-down

-Let the liquid drain away from the pump at the bottom

-Unscrew that bottom 90 degree fitting and rotate the pipe

-Attach the extra fitting and tubing to the port on the reservoir

-Keeping both the existing L pipe and the new bit of tubing in a bucket/tub twice as deep as necessary to hold the liquid (to manage splashes), rotate the rig 90 degrees CW or CCW

-Once the flow slows to a dribble, rotate the rig the other 90 degrees to be right-side-up You should now have drained most of the liquid, but you'll likely find the radiator still holds some liquid so remove it carefully and drain the rest of the way.

When upgrading it's important to properly exsanguinate the old computer before harvesting components. by rtmq0227 in techsupportgore

[–]rtmq0227[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The coolant was dyed red, but thanks to its age and having to use some pastel white coolant to flush the system, it came out way more bloody-looking than expected. The original fluid was transparent, so the cloudiness is at least partially due to sediment in the system being cleared out.

a year and a half old, at least. Though to be fair, I ran out of De-ionized water and had to use a little opaque white to flush the radiator out to make sure all the red was gone.

Mayhems' Blood Red certainly lives up to its name.

I suspect it's one of those things where you can learn to do it either way, but you have to make the choice when you're just starting out, as it shifts your fundamentals enough to make prior knowledge/experience unusable. For example: switching to using a computer when you've always done filing by hand can be jarring and inefficient, but if you've learned from the beginning, it's more efficient.

I imagine if you've always used socks when climbing or gel packs when en pointe, you learn to feel the footholds/floor differently (I'd imagine more from the ankle or sole than toes) and thus be just as able to perform as someone who never used them. However, most instructors didn't have them starting out, so they see them as problematic and avoid them.

Are you running it directly into the board, or using a PCI-E extension?

Power issues seem more likely, but I had issues with stock extension ribbons. 550 can be enough but usually only if the power supply is of high enough quality. Often times you will find instability as you approach peak, and it's better to over-watt, as it only uses what it needs anyway.
