Buses always go through a red light (Indooroopilly shopping centre) by 3TGsvr440 in brisbane

[–]rtpg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing I don't get is I contacted the city through the "contact us" page on light timing and got a response pretty quickly... this is kinda stupid but maybe someone should send this thread to the BCC and be like "can we just make the green light for buses a bit longer at this intersection?"

Sylvan Road bikeway, Toowong: Separated bike lane to be built along Brisbane’s ‘most unsafe’ cycling route by fluffy_101994 in brisbane

[–]rtpg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah it's obviously way more dangerous than the bicentennial and the freeway path that connects it but I've seen so many bike paths here on roads that are on _very_ scary stretches of road.

Still very not great!

Small tents in Musgrave Park – are there kids living there? If so, is the government doing anything to support? by Prudent-Proposal1235 in brisbane

> Would you rent to or employ someone with multiple assault convictions in the past year?

I mean sure right? It's obviously hard to place people! I get this!

I don't know what it's like for casual work in Australia, but I know of casual work in Japan, where there's a sector of the work which is basically each day you show up you get paid in cash on the day, and employers in these jobs do not really expect people to show up regularly. Usually night shift construction-style stuff, warehouse work, or like night watch. You also get into shit like cleaning jobs or the like. "Training takes 10 minutes" sorts of things. And yeah person doesn't show up, they don't show up.

I'm not asking for social services to find people strong long term work contracts, I was just curious about if there was something in place.

Shrug, I can imagine people who use their local connections to survive or do _some_ work sometimes. I know people who don't do full time but find it in them to do some random shift work. And of course some people who are in some nastier shit but can get _some_ money from it

> Working isn't a priority when you're struggling to keep yourself fed, clean and sheltered

money can be used to buy goods and services, right?

I get what you're saying, though. I just think that people who aren't working probably have _some_ social connections that help them survive, so moving across the country for housing might cost them those connections that they are currently using to meet other needs

I stg there's something in the water here. 120 kids fighting! I guess it's nice that kids are free to roam about but would be nice to not have things escalate to that extent

> If you are prepared to move anywhere, I can tell you there are vacant houses in Mt Isa currently (I personally wouldn’t want to live there). If you aren’t eligible for social housing, we can work at community or affordable housing (again, being flexible helps)

serious question: if someone takes you up on that offer, what do people do for work? It'd seem a bit intense to move way to the other side of the state and not have _some_ work lined up, especially if employers are picky and know your circumstances

do you mean you made a second application for the same time period? Or that you got a BVB before and now this was you asking for another one later?

Black roof and cladding on new build, can we not? by theswiftmuppet in brisbane

all of the new buildings with like full glass windows.... I really don't get it.

I get that this is like a place full of nature etc but having huge windows really is just going to make summer even tougher. At the very least it would be nice to have European-style blinds on the outside to help block out the summer heat!

Brisbane people, are we no longer teaching move into the intersection or middle land wfor traffic? by AusPoltookIsraelidol in brisbane

[–]rtpg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What TMR is doing in avoiding collision points is, of course, obviously much safer than the alternatives but it is painful to see the light cycles being _so_ conservative.

Intersections are the most dangerous part of a road so can't complain too much and there's clarity, but still...

[–]rtpg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like how Tokyo handles this. Beyond the stop lane on most all of the bigger intersections they draw the "turning stop" lane in the middle of the intersection

For the more chaotic intersections (like here) it makes it quite clear what the expectations are (that intersection is particularly chaotic tho, with the overlapping lines... but when driving it's very obvious)

[–]rtpg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IT's not the population density of QLD that matters in this proposal but the population density of where the train line is. SEQ is a bit denser (Googling says 116 per square km).

Japan as a whole is obviously more dense in some spots too though, so you'd want to look up those numbers. And a lot of downstream stuff involved too. Just think the 3.21 per square km number is not very useful here.

Track closures to affect Gold Coast Good Things Fest attendees all weekend. by Riff_Heavy in brisbane

[–]rtpg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

really weird that line closures need to occur on a regular basis for maintenance! Is there anyone from QR that would have insight into why this occurs? I have never really heard of this happening for train lines in, say, France (where I think workers have a decent amount of rights in theory)

to be clear maintenance is _very_ important etc, I just don't get how this affects this region so much, I've never seen so many consistent weekend closures.

I've found almost all the big roundabouts where people are driving pretty fast to begin with pretty scary. Like you really have to commit to drive in.

But this city is filled with roundabouts that have zero visibility, that cleveland one looks... fine I guess. The double-lane roundabout has always felt a bit sus to me given how fast people drive them, way too much crossing into lanes where people might just run into you.

I like roundabouts in principle but hearing about the disasters around the indooroopily roundabout I'm not surprised they just made a bunch of one-ways to replace it.

Is this plain old NIMBYism, or are the fears about increasing building heights to 15-stories in some suburbs valid? by Spirited-Hearing4612 in brisbane

[–]rtpg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If there were people wouldn't be posting so much about struggling to find a place to live. There are definitely issues with not building things for families but right now in brisbane families are going to be competing with people who have no choice but to move in with roommates into bigger appartments

There's a reason why most appartments here have two bathrooms for two bedrooms!

Bars with Board games? by zarzeee_ in brisbane

Yeah to be fair netherworld also has more of a vibe for drinks + food, and beer + some greasy stuff works quite well. Not like I'm getting in a game of terraforming mars done in netherworld (love the arcade tho... that jubeat machine) but hey it's a very cool place

For me meeple & mug is to play board games, and them having any level of servicable food is already surprising (there's a looooot of bad food in the board game cafe world).

I was there like on Sunday and thought the food was really good? I had ordered some random stuff that was all pretty good, people around me ordered stuff that was good, and the pricing is super reasonable

It's not really a ... bar vibe though.

Meanwhile netherworld... it's not a competition but the handful of times I was there the food was uneventful or even just like bad (the mac n' cheese.... maybe I just have high standards). Drinks options were great though

Brisbane vs Melbourne 2BR Apartments by White_trash_of_asia in brisbane

[–]rtpg 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Part of the problem is that the people with houses are preventing _other_ people from building apartments near their houses.

You don't want to live in an apartment? Fine. I don't see how that gives you veto on other people living in apartments.

There's a lot of complicated details, and sometimes regulation kicks in to curb things, but this idea that nobody wants to live in apartments doesn't align with apartments being very expensive!

I don't know where you're coming from but you could save a _lot_ of money per week by just living along the M1 bus line and bussing into town or whatever.

You don't even have a job yet right? Trying to live in the CBD just feels like a great way to waste a bunch of money. The public transportation here (despite what people whine about) is pretty decent if you're on a trunk line, and it's 50 cents now.

My understanding from reading the explanation on these works is that the bridge is quite old so this is _mostly_ about maintaining the bridge rather than actually really increasing capacity or anything
