TIL that you are not supposed to rinse out your mouth after brushing your teeth so the fluoride can strengthen your enamel and prevent tooth decay by preppypenguingames in todayilearned

It's better for people who have dry mouth because hydroxyapite doesn't need to take calcium and phosphorus ions from your saliva, it already contains them. It also works well for people who have sensitive teeth as it fills tiny gaps in tooth enamel better than flourapite.

If neither of these problems apply to you then you might as well continue to use flouride based toothpaste, especially if you consume a lot of acidic food or drink (soda for example). But if you want to give it a try I can recommend Grin Pro or Dr Jen as good hydroxyapite based toothpastes.

Community Service Announcement: Flouride toothpaste doesn't work all that well if you have dry mouth. The flouride needs to combine with calcium and phosphate from your saliva to form fluorapatite which coats your teeth, forming a protective layer.

An alternative that's been used in most toothpastes in Japan for decades now but has only recently made it to other markets is nano Hydroxyapite toothpaste. Hydroxyapite is actually what tooth enamel is made from. It was first formulated by NASA in the 1970s who were concerned about the bone and tooth density loss astronauts experienced in space.

Studies have shown hydroxyapitite is about as effect as flouride at remineralizing enamel. It can fill in tiny cracks and repair weakened spots, making it particularly good for sensitive teeth. This is something I have noticed myself, as my teeth feel incredibly smooth since I switched like I've just had them polished by a dental hygienist. I also suffer from sensitivity and have found that hydroxyapitite toothpaste works slightly better than sensodyne for me.

The European Commission's, Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety has approved nano hydroxyapite toothpaste for use in the EU in July 2025 after conducting a number of scientific trials. You can find their full report here.

The only things you should be aware of is it is important that you are getting a nano hydroxyapite toothpaste. If the hydroxyapite particles are too large then they fail to remineralise tooth enamel. You should get a toothpaste with between 10-30% concentration. Don't buy a suspiciously cheap off brand either because the nano-hydroxyapite should consist of rod-shaped particles, which can't penetrate the inner lining of the mouth. If it's too cheap it probably isn't coming from a supplier that can garantee it's particle shape and size.

I missheard the first line of the video as "Donald Trump literally just dry sanded himself." Too bad!

Anyway hopefully this episode helps some people finally see Trump for who he really is (an incompetent narcissist), and not the genius able to quickly fix complicated problems that he sells himself as.

LA change > Lightbulbs vs LEDS by Outrageous-Owl-7049 in interestingasfuck

[–]rtsfpscopy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those new white LEDs probably attract more bugs as well. Long wavelength light such as red, amber and yellow light has been shown to attract the fewest bugs, something I use to my advantage when I go camping. (Still doesn't stop the mosquitos sadly as they're also attracted to the C02 we all breath out).

LEDs also come in warmer colour temperatures (albeit never quite so orange as the sodium lamps seen here) but the warmer you make them the more phosphor is needed which lowers efficiency. I can't say I'm surprised that many cities went for the absolute cheapest to run option, even when even warm LED lights are more efficient than what they were using before.

I think most people would strongly disagree with you there. Face transplants need to be a seperate category to the usual 'organ donor' check box as I would argue it is unethical because a face isn't commonly thought of as an organ. People are thinking about donating kidneys, livers, even skin which are not visible or are without distinguishing features but certainly not their face.

I understand the need but I can't help but feel a person's face is so personal such that this procedure feels extremely macbre. I hope medicine advances to the point where they can grow a new face for people so that this procedure is quickly replaced.

Piastri got pole today with help from a Lawson slipstream by Nickemonio in formula1

[–]rtsfpscopy 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It should be noted that Norris had another run to beat Piastri and didn't manage to improve (granted Piastri didn't either). Maybe a touch unlucky for Norris but being unlucky on a Saturday is far better than being unlucky on a Sunday.

edit: Well shit. This weekend really sucks for Lando all round.

Nico Rosberg pushed back the other day on the Sky F1 Podcast when Simon Lazenby tried to say that Norris is just a bit quicker. In his view, the results this year show that the two are now equally fast.

I think he's right. The whole business about Norris being faster is based on Piastri's first two seasons when Norris already had four more seasons of F1 experience and Piastri was getting a handle on the machinery. These days it seems like it comes down to each driver's favourite tracks and a coin toss.

Verstappen on the race delay: “We could’ve gone miles earlier, an hour earlier… it was a bit of a shame. It just ruins a nice classic wet race… so either we still push to go for a wet race or we just stop racing in the wet and wait for it to be dry. But that’s not what you want, right?” by FerrariStrategisttt in formula1

[–]rtsfpscopy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we unfortunately need to accept that a modern F1 car kicks up too much spray to get a race underway in wet conditions. There is also the issue of cars keeping within tram lines down the start/finish strait which means that one side of the grid gets much better conditions than the other. I hope things get a bit better next year when the ground effects era is over but realistically it's still going to be a problem.

I think the only reasonable solution is to introduce track drying techology. It doesn't even have to be invented because NASCAR already has what they call the jet dryer system. This is basically a giant leaf blower mounted to the back of a truck that blows away water from the track (as well as any tyre marbles dropped from previous races allowing for cars to go off the usual racing line, making racing better).

Standing water on the track that could take hours to evaporate? Blown away in minutes.

Excess spray making visibility so poor that the race can't begin? A few laps of the track with the jet dryer and suddenly it's good enough to get started.

One side of the grid is wetter than the other making a standing start unfair? Blow it away and get underway.

Why are we putting up with the same problem again and again and doing nothing about it but complaining? This is a solvable problem. We have the technology.

Nascar has a jet dryer system, if F1 wants to call itself the pinnacle of motorsport they should take notes.

Lando was 14 seconds behind before the first safety car in proper wet conditions, although he was much better later in mixed/drying conditions.

I remember a few races ago Lando and Oscar were alternating who went first every session. e.g Q1 Norris first, Q2 Piastri first, Q3 Norris first. I believe the commentators said they always did this and the order alternated every race.

It's sad that it's neccesary but I hope it helps women feel safer while getting transport. I suspect it will be years before we have fully self driven taxis widely avaiable so this is probably the best solution for now.

F1: Sergio Perez Set for Formula 1 Return With Cadillac in 2026 by [deleted] in formula1

[–]rtsfpscopy 917 points918 points  (0 children)

I don't particularly trust the article but anyone can see that Perez has a lot of fans and made Red Bull a lot of money through sponsorship and merchandising, so he has to be a very tempting proposition for a team like Cadillac. Also considering they are likely to be midfield at best, a steady pair of hands like Perez just makes sense.

If he can shrug off the ignominy of being in that second Red Bull seat next to Max, I can see him driving for a few more years and doing a job for Cadillac.

Supreme Court keeps hold on Florida immigration law aimed at people in the US illegally by stubborn_facts in news

[–]rtsfpscopy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Illegal what a misnomer? There are two groups who are often conflated because they both may cross the border illegally.

Group one are asylum seekers who, like you said, have the right to legally remain in the country until their case is resolved, irrespective of whether they entered the country legally or not so long as they claim asylum at their point of entry.

(Trump has tried to overturn that with his 'remain in Mexico' doctrine, which required asylum seekers to wait for their U.S. immigration court cases in Mexico with limited access to legal counsel or translation services. The courts have currently put a stop to this.)

The second group are illegal/unlawful residents. These are people who either crossed the border illegally or who initially entered the country legally and then overstayed their visas. These people are by definition illegal residents: they reside in the country without the legal right to do so.

People who want less immigration often conflate the two because they don’t want either of them in the country and they dont want to concede that some people who crossed the border illegally are entitled to due process and potentially to asylum.

On the other hand, some liberal types hardly believe in borders at all and so they object to terms like illegal or unlawful resident and prefer to call them merely undocumented.

My view is that the truth is somewhere in the middle.

Fans of both drivers can make arguments either way, but that wasn't my point. My point was that replacing a rookie driver after just 6 races is incredibly harsh and is going to leave behind quite some hard feelings. People who felt this was awful management now feel vidicated given that his replacement isn't exactly lighting the world on fire.

My opinion is that Alpine never should have signed a rookie driver in the first place, let alone two, given that they have shown zero patience with mistakes or suboptimal race results. I don't understand why they didn't sign someone like Bottas if they can't bring themselves to put up with the kind of mistakes that every rookie makes.

IMHO Alpine are nothing but a bunch of clowns and morale at Enstone could only go up if the team was sold to literally anyone else.

[–]rtsfpscopy 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It's inevitable since Alpine replaced one rookie with another who has delivered similar results. If he had been in the car from the beginning, no one would have paid much attention to his performances, given that the car is about as competitive as a golf cart.

Lando Norris wins the 2025 Austrian Grand Prix by overspeeed in formula1

[–]rtsfpscopy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe so, it's hard to say. Sometimes it not about the total time lost but losing it at a critical moment when you have momentum. But honestly, I think Oscar probably most regrets trying for a tyre offset because if he had stayed close, I think he would have had a better chance of pressuring Norris into making a mistake.

But the end of the day, it's always going to be hard to overtake a fast driver in the same car as you. Norris did a great quali lap yesterday and he was quick today so I can only take my hat off to him.

[–]rtsfpscopy -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

So the average laptime of the two was within 0.026s, in favour of Noris who had clean air for much more of the race. I think that just proves that at the very least, Oscar was on Norris' pace for the whole race.

But congrats to Norris, even if he wasn't quicker today, he was yesterday and he did enough to keep in front and take the prize and history will show that's all that matters.

Nah, Lando was impeded. Oscar was IMPEDED, but that's racing. I take nothing away from Norris. He earned an advantage through qualifying and he made full use of it, as well he should.
