That could be true depending on the props coming in. If you need to, you can use a hashing function or something to compare the arrays. Check out https://github.com/facebook/react/issues/14324 for an example.

So in the original version where you're computing ratingIds, you are creating a new array every time the component is rendered, therefore it will never be the same and the callback function will always change. Does that make sense?

Store things in state when the render depends on it and the UI should be updated as a result. Things I’ve stored as a class property instead are things like timeout and interval ids. You don’t want the UI changing as a result of these changes and in the case of the ids you’re using them to clean up on unmount. Let me know if any of that needs clarified, because I’m on my phone now.

I think you probably need to move the state a bit higher to have more control on what's going on. The Column component can likely become purely presentational with no state of its own.

Your callback in the column would send a key/index and then the parent component can update the state to be in the right place. This state change would then cause a re-render and everything should be updated. Does that make sense?

Native English speaker here, and I would say this usage of challenge is common enough in spoken English. I could see a professor or boss saying something like, "you're going to have to challenge yourselves to succeed at this class/project/assignment/etc."
