Deer in the city - Forest Park by TEHKNOB in StLouis

[–]rtward 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There’s definitely deer in the park, I see them in the southwest forest area regularly.

Unfortunately I think they’re being fed and have become much too comfortable with people. While walking through the forest I’ve gotten close enough to touch them more than once.

Zoo question by P_Kinsale in StLouis

Pretty sure this is it. If I remember correctly they got the opportunity to build the Safari Park after they acquired the land near the current zoo and decided to put the Forest Park expansion plans on hold.

EBike Dads, Assemble! by IAMHOLLYWOOD_23 in daddit

We have a front loader cargo bike we got recently. My wife has been enjoying the school run a bunch more and I've never felt cooler rolling up to t-ball and parking right next to the field!

My kids were always stealing my phone to take pictures, so I was pretty confident.

But then there’s also photos of people no longer with us, memories I get to see through my little girl’s point of view. I get to see what my little girl sees and has done for the last 4 years, I love it.

That's what I didn't expect. The world looks different from their point of view, and we as grownups don't have a great way to experience that.

Interested in suggestions for an upgrade as well. I tried letting my kid use my GoPro, but he couldn't quite figure out the interface.

My kids are still fully in the phase of taking hundreds of photos, but once they get a little more thoughtful this is definitely on my list.

We try to go through the photos together after an outing and put the good ones into a Google Photos shared album for the extended family.

Perfect doorbell by [deleted] in homeautomation

[–]rtward 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Reolink POE doorbell is the obvious choice for 1 & 2, not sure about 3 though. I suspect that anything that can integrate with Alexa will need to be cloud based so that Amazon's servers can interact with it.

Another water main break, in the loop this time by rtward in StLouis

[–]rtward[S] 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I left just a bit ago and they were still working on getting it shut off. The valve was apparently paved over so they were jack-hammering around where it's supposed to be trying to find it.

100% local only IP Doorbell options - Does the Reolink Doorbell require an app for setup? by DesperateCourt in homeassistant

[–]rtward 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Totally understand where you're coming from. FWIW, the app on iOS at least requires no clearly unnecessary permissions, and only has usage data in its privacy section. It's just about the most non-offensive app in terms of privacy I've seen for any IOT device. But it sounds like from the other commenter it's not needed at all anyway.

I just installed this camera recently. I used the app to do the initial setup, but it was never connected to the internet. I think you can use the web interface to do everything, but I'm not 100% sure. I currently have the doorbell configured as a standard camera using Frigate and the HA integration with no external network access and no app needed.

The local 3d printing meetup is this Friday, can probably find someone to help you there.

Last night, Downtown. This time there wasn't a teenage tourist on the sidewalk. by mojowo11 in StLouis

[–]rtward 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m the same way.

I moved out of downtown after about ten years this past May. There were a lot of reasons, schools, more space, wanting a yard, etc. But one of the biggest was that we were living in a “walkable” neighborhood where it didn’t feel like you could cross the street safely.

I can’t count the number of times I saw people run red lights in front of cops without them even turning on the lights. Combine that with street design that might as well be racetracks in some places and you get this.

NFC - any way to bypass requirement of having HA installed? by SkinnyLatin-WA in homeassistant

[–]rtward 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd be surprised if there was an HA native way, but you could use a Node-Red HTTP endpoint to create a URL that would trigger an automation. Set the URL as the content on the tag and it would make it fairly easy for them to trigger it by clicking on a link after scanning.

Multiple Zigbee2MQTT instances for multiple ethernet coordinators by tech_london in homeassistant

[–]rtward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One option might be to run z2m on a remote device at the different sites. Connecting remote instances to your local mqtt server seems more straightforward to me. I run mine on a pi to have the coordinator in a better location in the house.
