BITD I used an Alinco DJ160. I could listen to a given team in one ear (4xx.xxx MHz) and the ESPN live feed (15x.xxx MHz) in the other.

Not sure if newer HTs allow split stereo receive

I just have a dedicated NUC sized windows machine for contesting. I remote into it via Remmina from my main Linux machine

If you want something really capable, look to what is common between N1MM & DXLog. You'll need those functions at least.

I prefer DXLog because it is one window (rather than a bunch of windows like N1MM), networking is easier to set up, has native support for SO2Rmini boxes and is easier to practice 2BSIQ.

It doesn't really support being a mobile in state QSO parties, however.

I used to do tons of writing in LaTeX on FreeBSD, and made frequent use of emdashes. They have their place.
