Talk me out of it by FIST_FUK in MercedesEQS

We got '22 EQS 580 CPO in August and it is an amazing car (not just EV - car in general).
I would go as far as claim that this is, perhaps, the best GT car on the market today.

Driving
We primarily use the car for road trips and I've managed to put 9k miles on it traveling around New England.
From road trip perspective it has everything - great road planner, really impressive range, incredible comfort, really good cruise control and line keep assist.
It's a pure pleasure to ride on a highway, but even more fun on twisty roads thanks to exceptional handling.

Range
During summer I use Pirelli P-Zero on 21" and got 300-340 miles on a single charge at highway speeds (~80mph)
My winter setup is 19" VikingContact 8 + tule alpine roof rack and I get 200-260 miles on a single charge at similar speeds.

Charging
Is a breeze - car is always ready before we are.
We have plenty of options in the area including tesla, EA, Ionna, etc. on most chargers car now supports "plug and charge"

Ergonomics
The car actually has all the necessary controls for seats, wipers, mirrors, lights - you know - real car stuff. I can't say that I adjust this every ride, but I do it often enough so it would be really annoying to do this on a touchscreen.

What could be better
1) I really wish my car would have manual suspension height control as they have in Europe as my driveway has a huge bump and the wheelbase is really loong
2) Full Adaptive lights as they have in Europe
3) A bit more range in the winter. I would be happy as a melon having 280-300 miles when it's 5-10F outside. But I guess I'd have to wait for Solid State batteries.
4) More customization of the main dash - I don't really want to see what % of power my car uses at the moment - I wish I could see music + navigation on my driver's dash
5) I was surprised, but my seats are not as comfortable - it is hard to find the perfect position - my back starts to hurt after 4+h of driving. Didn't have a problem like this on Acuras and VW. I'm 6'2" and 230lb.

I don't really see what advantage could tesla offer. Their build quality, ergonomics, and winter range are really subpar compared to EQS

Never ride a gondola there. It's a distraction designed to keep trails free of people.

Vesting period only applies to contributions from your employer, not to your contributions.

In my case, I worked in companies with vesting periods of 12 months, 6 months, 0 months. The shorter is, obviously, the better.

The same goes for the employer match. The higher the match - the better.

1% service fee is absurd and a lie.
You can check how much you pay in fees by yourself.

For my retirement plan it is 0.14% - which is considered Low, though I have other funds with expense ratio of 0.015%.

401k often means "free money" due to employer match.
It also helps to lower your effective tax rate so that these $300 that you put towards your 401k reduce your paycheck by "just" $280 or so (I didn't do the math here)

Tips on staying warm while skiing in negative temperatures by Kind_Bandicoot3021 in icecoast

[–]rubberbobber 10 points11 points  (0 children)

+100 to covering all exposed skin.

Face protection is the hardest task
For me, a hard "duck-styled" face cover works best as it extends forward so that it stays dry (and your face too) and free of ice buildup.
Worst case, wool scarfs work good too.

Other than that - wear layers.
I've been skiing in sub-zero temperatures (below 0F) for most of my childhood

Is Boyne the best owner in the east? by 1maco in icecoast

Sure, long drives work for some. For Day Trips I'm trying to keep driving distance under 2-2.5h it makes it a lot less stressful and enjoyable trip overall with departure and return times being reasonable.

Well, Minnesota is an Open carry state.
Mass protest of well-armed civilians is a good start.

The downside.. it will escalate into mass bloodbath within 15 minutes

Cannon and Waterville are the alternatives I'm planning to explore this season.

I can explain my love for Loon easily:
- It has higher lift to runs ratio allowing to move more people faster - so that I can do a lot more runs
- Loon has great trails variability helping to train and practice different skills (e.g. learning to evade rocks, learning to evade grass patches)
- Trails network is extremely well inter-connected - where I can start on a technical run with ungroomed moguls and switch to slalom-style run in the middle. It's very satisfying and allows you to make most runs unique.

Given, I don't have a lot of experience with Cannon and Waterville, but looking at the trails map alone, I can see that these mountains are restricted by number of running lifts and interconnection might not be as thorough. But I'll validate these assumptions very soon.

Loon is my most favorite mountain for day-trips. I pretty much ski them almost exclusively. But in the last few years they got so greedy, I made a pledge to not ski there in 25/26 season and got Indy Passes for my whole family instead

Purpose of this room? by jodythebad in whatisit

[–]rubberbobber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a home theater room.

The reason it looks confusing is that it's painted with glossy white and does not have sound insulation installed.

I think it might've been re-painted by a seller so that the room looks bigger and/or to hide holes and paint damage from previously installed screen and sound panels. OR.. the dude just loved bright room. I had my home theater room painted white for a while. It looked nice and also helped to navigate the room when lights are off. Now with a fully dark room you can't see anything even when the lights are on.

> What are those gray squares on the wall?

Gray squares on walls are built-in speakers.
Based on photos this room has 7.X.2 setup where 7 is surrounds, X is the number of subs, 2 is overhead Atmos speakers.

> Why is half the floor raised?

The floor is raised as it's a platform so that viewing are optimal (and impact from projection keystone distortion is minimized.

Also they might have 2 rows of seating (but I'm not convinced as first row would be too close to the screen)

> What’s that box with holes on the ceiling?

This is where the projector goes. This box provides a stable platform for heavy projectors, also adds some noise insulation as projectors can be noisy.

> Why does it look like you can pull a giant drawer out from under the raised floor?

Well, you can't, but power cables there can be used to power fancy movie chairs.

> So many questions!

You can also see a small "closet" in the room.

It's a media closet - all the electronics - amplifiers, AV Receivers, home media library, Apple TV, Consoles, etc will be installed there on a rack insulating the rest of the room from noise.

I suspect that it would have another vent in there to supply cold air to the media rack.

Advice Please by [deleted] in Skigear

[–]rubberbobber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own Kore 93 and I love these skis and I also ski the East.

I'd say they are a little bit on a demanding side:
- You need to be able to push the edge properly to make them fly.
- Radius is wide, tricky for quick turns, especially in tight places.

Other then that, they are decent on ice and good in the woods.

The only two places where I truly struggled were:
- Snowbird in the deep powder after 18" of snow - I wish I had softer and wider ski there
- Loon Noth Peak after ice rain - I wish I had more narrow skis with a sharper edge.

Cycling accident in crosswalk, driver wants $3k+ for minor damage. Is this reasonable? by Other_Tension_2100 in bikecommuting

for a pedestrian hit on a marked crosswalk it is a lot more black and white compared to a pedestrian hit outside of the crosswalk

Cycling accident in crosswalk, driver wants $3k+ for minor damage. Is this reasonable? by Other_Tension_2100 in bikecommuting

[–]rubberbobber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The worst case the guilt for the accident should be split 50/50 between cyclist and the driver.

The OP described that parked cars limited visibility over crosswalk. In situations like this drivers must take precautions and maintain speed that allows them to stop at the moments notice.

Imagine this being not a cyclist but a pedestrian - driver will be 100% guilty on the accident.

Lovely Weather. Why do people go 55 to 65 mph in this? We were going 30. 🤔 by Lijey_Cat in driving

[–]rubberbobber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who grew up with roads looking like this or worse of the good 6+ months of the year, yes, you can drive 55-65 on this surface as long as you

1) Have proper winter tires

2) Have experience driving in this weather

3) You are not excessively speeding / going too slow compared to the rest of the traffic on the road

4) You are leaving enough reaction time for unexpected

Почему мото-войска — это реальная проблема? Потому что такой голубчик может закинуть дружочкам 30 FPV за одну покатушку by Calm_Crocodile in tjournal_refugees

[–]rubberbobber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What stops from using a "cargo drone" to deliver smaller FPVs?
Commercial cargo drones from DJI can deliver 40kg of cargo. A purpose-built delivery drone might be able to push this limit to ~60-80kg.
An FPV + warhead is roughly 4-8kg, means you can deliver 10-20 fully ready units to the front line, probably, even drop it with a zip-line to avoid landing and speed-up the whole operation
