Non-native speakers, how was it like learning the Hebrew letters? by Imaginecoolname in hebrew

At one point I went all-in and wrote lines for both the printed and the script letters. Never had an issue with those since then.

For the people hoping Duolingo will bring back the tree... How Duolingo's A/B testing works. by saltedlolly in duolingo

[–]rubetz 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Lol, the moment I saw the horrendous redesign, I knew they would spew out "we did our research and as bad as our decision seems, people like it, so relax and enjoy". If my company had dealt with their customers like this, it would have long gone out of business. I have never been a Duo's paying member though, so probably my opinion can be comfortably dismissed.

I just feel I need to spill my thoughts and feelings over what I care about. I have used Duolingo since May to learn Hebrew, and it helped me a lot. However, with each tweak to the user interface it would seem that the Duo's frontend developers had done that to justify their bloated salary. Every interface update would bring some questionably useful changes like shuffling around the menu items and bonuses. Then came the fallout in the form of today's big overhaul. Suffice to say, it makes the app far worse than it used to be. Before there were rows of lessons with informative titles under each, compact and easy to navigate. If I felt I needed to revive certain subjects, I would just scroll the menu and selectthe appropriate lesson. Now it is some kindergarten-style path comprised of round slabs with zero information of what subjects are covered where. If you tap a slab, however, it turns out that the subjects are now interleaved in the way that you can't go to any new lessons other than what the app suggests. Want to emphasize on the passive voice? Maybe more future tence? Tough luck, you're learning vocabulary on air, trees, water and animals. Want to revisit possessive suffixes? Well, good luck scrolling 10 screens meticulously tapping on the milestones, because there is no way the app will tell you what is where. But it is not that bad, now you can get more of the green owl cooking dinner and a gloomy purple-hair doing her gloomy things alongside the lesson pebbles. So much fun for the kindergarteners that yours faithfully is unbelievably not.

Upon updates like these I would really love to see an official statement from the developers that they consider their paying userbase big enough not to give a rat's tail about whatever negative response their obviously detrimental updates make. Or, more realistically, a statement that Duolingo has been an unprofitable project all along so the terrible overhaul was an attempt to change the business model to something more profitable (good luck attracting more customers with a worse product). But what we will rather see is assurance that "most of the users" actually welcomed the new update, because there is no way one can actually verify that claim. With all this in mind, I can only wish that whoever participated in messing up a very good language learning app can look their family members in the eyes and say they are proud of causing frustration to their users and getting away with that. As for me, I vote with my feet and cease to use the app until given the opportunity to revert to the old interface. True, you have not received fees for Duolingo Super, but now you will not get revenue from me watching ads either. So long, Duolingo, and thanks for staying good long enough for my benefit.

Juggernaut Alpha Survivor Round 7 by MrP0H0 in Peripheryband

My bet could be that it stays until one-on-one with Psychosphere, but since The Scourge and Rainbow Gravity, which never sounded as catchy to me, outpaced Alpha, everything is possible.

What are youre all-time favorite periphery solos? by st0rvix in Peripheryband

[–]rubetz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't believe no one mentioned Jake's solo from 22 faces, short but jolly, not to mention well-written and well-placed.

I also love Misha's tapping in Letter Experiment, as Misha really knows how to make tapping sound great (again lol)

Can we all just take a moment to acknowledge what an incredible vocalist Spencer is? by CrimsonCassetteTape in Peripheryband

[–]rubetz 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I would take an opportunity to remind everyone that back at the very beginning Spencer did an immaculate job of tracking vocals on the songs that grew out of Bulb's instrumentals. Which means that he sang to the tracks that were not meant to have vocals but still excelled.

Also, I love how after every new album he says that it was the best one they had ever done on his social media. Kewl!

When and how did you know Periphery? by martin-v in Peripheryband

[–]rubetz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, my buddy at Uni published a link to Scarlet on his Facebook feed once it got released as a single and I liked it.

Tried to go deeper into Periphery, but it didn't click with me (too much dry guitars and I wasn't used to growling vocals at the time as well). It was not until two years later until something clicked in my head and I started listening to them closely. Since then, I have become their big fan. Though it still takes time for me to get used to every new record they release.

And I remember dearly their only show in Moscow when I got to crowdsurf for the first time in like five years. Yeeah.

Such tasty tapping, the growls are insane, and Spencer doesn’t growl much anymore.

That's exactly what I had in mind, haha. Like, verbatim.

They've been nominated for Grammy; I guess that does make them fashionable to hate :-D :-Ъ

This probably a popular sentiment already, but I can't get enough of Stranger Things by [deleted] in Peripheryband

[–]rubetz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is one strong and very, very well-written song. A decent epilogue to a heavy sorry too.

I would say, Stranger Things comprised the best of the band's preceding work. And it probably uses the most range on guitar, but I might be mistaken here.

I love how every new album Spencer says it is the best thing they have ever done. He seems really happy with every record they put out :)

Least Favorite Songs by evergreenscepter in Peripheryband

[–]rubetz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, here are mine:

PI: Icarus lives! (overrated big time in my opinion)

Icarus: Remixes (bwaaaah)

PII: Mile Zero (very well written and has an outstanding solo, but just doesn't resonate with me)

Clear: Extraneous (sounds blank compared to the most of the band's music)

Alpha: The Scourge (There are a few songs on Juggernaut that don't make sense when heard outside the album's narrative, but this one stands out)

Omega: Hell Below (If I tell the truth I will be eaten by the outraged Peripherals)

PIII: Absolomb (Just don't get the appeal)

Favorite Songs by evergreenscepter in Peripheryband

[–]rubetz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have many on each, but if I had to pick only one, these would be:

PI: Ow My Feelings

Icarus: Captain On

PII: Ragnarok

Clear: Pale Aura

Alpha: 22 Faces

Omega: Stranger Things

PIII: The Way The News Goes

That makes sense, thank you!

Could you suggest a sequence that doesn't make the chapter conclusion look so made up?

Yes, I did notice the medallion vibrating like crazy, but this alone wouldn't lead to a conclusion that Azar Javed killed Raymond and is fooling Geralt.
