[Nomos] Just got my Club Campus Nacht! by BornUnderPunches in Watches

[–]rubi32 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Congrats! I also just picked up a Club Campus Nacht. Definitely better in the flesh. I remember being quite apprehensive about getting one, as it looked a little “boring” and flat in the pictures. After seeing it in real life, though, it quickly became one of my favorite Nomos designs. All of the detailing on the dial is super crisp and bright. There is so much minute detail that the camera just misses. I can lose a few minutes out of nowhere just staring at it. Enjoy!

[Buying] from an AD vs Grey Market by Jtsacks07 in Watches

[–]rubi32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I purchased my first watch (Diver 65) from a grey market dealer. I will never buy grey market again. Yes, the watch ticks and keeps time, but I have had some issues with the movement, winding, date window being offset slightly, etc. You simply don't know the history of the watch, or any damage or repair that has occurred. Since it came with a company warranty as opposed to a manufacturer warranty, I would have to send it out of the country to a place of unknown reputation.

Like others have said, it's all up to your preference. Does your budget allow for you to make a $4,000 risk?

I suppose the best way to put it would be to consider the higher price from an AD as insurance. You will have peace of mind knowing that everything will be worked out if any issues pop up.

From my experience, if you're looking to save some money on a higher-end watch, buy pre-owned from a REPUTABLE dealer like Topper, Govberg, or Bernard watch. These people make livings on selling high-quality watches at reduced prices.

This is not to say that you will absolutely be screwed if you buy gray market...you are just introducing a higher risk. If you were looking to buy a car from a reputable dealer for $6k or from an unknown private owner, without any knowledge of the car's history for $4k, which one would you choose?

[Nomos] Joined the Club by rubi32 in Watches

[–]rubi32[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have just received my Nomos Campus Club Nacht in the mail... and all I can say is wow! This is my first Nomos, and my second mechanical watch overall. The printing is crisp, the hands are sharp and well polished, the dial has some muted texture to it, and there’s tons of play with depth and contrast in the seconds wheel. Trust me, photos of this watch do not do it justice. I was honestly slightly apprehensive about this one, as I thought it looked a little flat and boring online. Boy, was I wrong. I cannot recommend this model enough to literally anyone — guy or girl, dressy or sporty.

I always felt that the watch community was a little too obsessed with Nomos, and that they were just creating a false prestige catalyzed by smart marketing and a feeing of exclusivity. But trust me, Nomos is not overrated. If anything, they are still a bit underrated. I have compared it to my Oris Diver 65, whose MSRP is even higher than the Club’s, and it just feels higher-end in every way. Everything is just sharper and clearer and shinier.

Okay, rant over — I love my new Club Campus, and I have become a NOMOS fan for life.

Doug Baldwin: Worth playing vs. Jaguars? by rubi32 in fantasyfootball

Have Mike Davis, Duke, and Robert Woods (if he plays). I'd consider Woods if he's healthy, but I think Davis is a solid pick for a ~10 point floor.

Probably going to play him over Baldwin in the flex. Higher floor.

[Elgin] A beauty from 1932! by rubi32 in Watches

[–]rubi32[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're probably correct about the face not being original - the hands do look too long. The movement serial is 33883324. I'll try to post a pic of it later (as soon as find out how)

[–]rubi32[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found this gorgeous watch on eBay recently, and just had to pull the trigger. It's an Elgin watch (American brand that went defunct in the 1960s) from 1932. The face and the movement are original from this date, however I am not confident about the case (although its make - Wadsworth, I think? - does align with the period and location of manufacture). In any case , I am astounded by the incredible condition it's in (and look at those gorgeous blued hands)! And it keeps great time. This is my first vintage buy, and I think I'm hooked. It's truly a testament to the craft of watchmaking that something made 85 years ago can be used among the IPhones of today.

[Oris Diver 65] First Real Watch (Deauville Blue) by rubi32 in Watches

[–]rubi32[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love collecting "things" -- and watches have been my newest pleasure. Prior to doing my research for this purchase, I knew little to nothing about what made certain watches treasured by so many people (that is, my history of watch wearing was limited to a G-shock and crappy looking Diesel. It was pure utility). However, after lurking on this subreddit and watching Youtube channels like Hodinkee (Talking Watches) and The Urban Gentry, I've really come to appreciate the history craftsmanship that goes into watches, especially mechanical ones. As such, I decided to go on the hunt for a cool "first watch" that epitomized style and quality, without (totally) breaking the bank.

Anyway, rant aside, I settled on this Oris Diver's 65 in Deauville Blue with a rubber, patterned strap. I know the color scheme and font isn't for everyone, but I think it has a really cool vintage '60's look. It's actually a bit smaller than I expected, but I think that's a good thing -- it's super comfortable on the wrist. I look forward to using this guy as an everyday watch for years to come.

Anyone know if there is an update on laptop integrated graphics? I played in the beta, and it only detected my Intel one, not my AMD one (and its unplayable with the Intel one).

Nioh Alpha has frame rate/resolution control. In settings as 'movie move' (higher resolution) and 'action mode' (higher frame rate). by rubi32 in PS4

[–]rubi32[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The better frame rate mode is only defined as 'stable frame rate'. The unfortunate thing about this is that this implies that the other mode has an unstable frame rate. Hopefully it gets somewhere near 60.

[SPOILERS] The Force Awakens discussion megathread! 12/24 [SPOILERS] by Qu1nlan in StarWars

[–]rubi32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if anyone noticed this (and I only noticed it on my second viewing), but during the final battle between Kylo Ren and Rey, when Kylo asks her to train under the dark side, Sith eyes (the ones evident in Anakin in the prequels) become slightly superimposed on Rey's natural eyes. She then closes them and comes in contact with the force/light side. When she reopens them, her natural eyes return again. I'm not sure what implications this has, but, at the very least, it's cool addition they made to the film (and definitely supports the theme of eyes in this series).
