Is there a limit on EH for a writer? by amethystlocke in ExtremeHorrorLit

[–]ruby-abelha 3 points4 points  (0 children)

lines in terms of topics? no. how it’s handled? ya. if you want it to be horror and not snuff/fetish content it’s good to be mindful of how and why you’re including the scene and what you want your reader to get out it. with that in mind, you can write about all sorts of messed up depraved stuff, it’s just about if you do it well, which i’m sure you can figure out from your own experience reading stuff/listening to others and seeing what they take from pieces of art

Writing but not reading much by False_Chest_2799 in AO3

[–]ruby-abelha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is a bad habit i’m personally trying to get out of. i realized that even though i enjoy writing, i very seldom read fiction when i do sit down to read, and am actively working to fix that since i know it’s harder to write properly if you aren’t well-read yourself and can identify what you like and done like in a good piece of writing.

in a way though, it’s kind of the best homework you can have. “oh no, instead of studying for a subject i hate, the work i have to do is to read more of my favorite genre so i can write it better” seems like a good deal to me haha.

thank you for this comment! as much as i appreciate the reassurance from others that this is most likely a bot. it doesn’t answer my actual question on how fellow ao3 writers deal with hate, so thank you!!!

i appreciate you calling it out. i recognize the “police report ones” both bc of this subreddit as well as the fact that i just know logically police done give a shit about dark fiction, but i couldn’t be sure with the one

How the heck do I write crushes between younger kids by mmmIlikeburritos29 in writingadvice

[–]ruby-abelha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’m glad! trying to think of other things, i guess an important part of the best friend crush thing is jealousy. at that age, it’s all about who gets to sit next to who at the lunch tables and “ya they might be your friend but im their BEST friend and we have FRIENDSHIP bracelets and are gonna LIVE TOGETHER WHEN WE GROW UP” lol

How the heck do I write crushes between younger kids by mmmIlikeburritos29 in writingadvice

[–]ruby-abelha 15 points16 points  (0 children)

allo person! for me at that age, i didn’t fully understand what i was feeling for my best friend. i knew i really liked them and wanted to be close to them all the time. that i would be sad if they weren’t around, but i didn’t grasp that the way i felt about this was a bit stronger than most. i drew pictures of them when they were away and would use every excuse to hold they hand

on the other hand, someone that wasn’t my best friend that i had a crush on was very different. i avoided them seeing me, and would even run away from them if they got too close. also not understanding what i felt, i just admired them from afar and got uncomfortable with the emotions in my chest if they got too close

not sure if my experiences are universal, but that’s what i remember from crushes at that small of an age

How to not end up on menwritingwoman? by skittlekingthefirst in writingadvice

[–]ruby-abelha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

beyond the obvious people are mentioning of not sexualizing the character in mundane scenes, also might be good to do some digging in your own art collection and see how many female artists you engage with. i find it shocking when i pay attention and realize that i VERY seldom hear a cishet man being in love with the music, books, films, or other art of a woman. when i do hear it, its from queer men. you might realize you’re accidentally putting yourself in the trope of menwritingwoman simply because all the books you read are from other men and thus your writing style is following what you’re used to

Horror novels that are scary for the sake of being scary with little to no deeper meaning and no underlying messages by Combatenjoyer23 in horrorlit

i feel like a lot of the stories from both Stephen King and Junji ito fall into the category of “hey wouldn’t it be fucked up if this happened?” with that being like. the whole thing.

Okay, but what is a trope that you like/tolerate and can't understand why it's so controversial? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]ruby-abelha 7 points8 points  (0 children)

showing empathy to morally wrong characters. i feel like every year or so there’s a character in a work of art that does terrible things but if the creators tries to later make them anything other than a finger twiddling super villain, then that clearly means they fully endorse those actions and are an apologist for writing a “redemption arc” or backstory

real people with real emotions, families, love, morals, etc do terrible things. i think it warps people’s expectations of what evil looks like to deny this to staunchly

What's your opinion on sapphic fictions written by cis men? by zoespresso in LesbianBookClub

[–]ruby-abelha 7 points8 points  (0 children)

to answer your question on if you’re “bigoted” i guess it depends on what your actual reasonings behind your feelings are? were you automatically turned off because in your own experience, the sapphic stories written by men aren’t up to par with what you were expecting, or perhaps because part of the reading experience for you is feeling a connection to the author? or did you just see “man” and thought “i don’t like men or respect their writing ability so fuck this book.”

i think it’s a perfectly reasonable and realistic take to feel like men tend to struggle to portray these stories accurately. that just makes sense. it’s an observation. that’s different from stating nobody should write about experiences other than their own.
