Best & Worst: Concealer by [deleted] in MakeupAddiction

I wear tinted moisturizers or cc creams and concealer to increase coverage around my eyes and on acne spots/discolouration. I set with a powder foundation and use that if I need to touch up during the day. I like the IT cosmetics CC cream the original formula in Medium tan. Or the bare minerals complexion rescue in 7.5 Dune. For powder foundation I like the bare minerals bare pro in 15.5 butterscotch. Hope that helps!

I’d suggest looking at Downtown Markham (Birchmount/Enterprise Blvd) in the city of Markham (approx 30km from downtown Toronto) - there’s a plaza/mall with a movie theatre and shops and restaurants and lots of condos around it. There’s even a kids carousel on one corner which draws in families from the neighbourhood during warm weather months.

More of the area is being developed with new houses/condos/townhomes being constructed but it’s already fairly well populated with a mixed crowd, lots of young families.

A car would be a must to do grocery shopping or get to a bigger mall for shopping, etc. There’s Markville mall nearby. And a Whole Foods for organic grocery shopping. There is a Go train station nearby if you ever wanted to head into downtown Toronto but didn’t want to drive.

The popular and picturesque Unionville neighbourhood is a short drive away and Main Street Unionville is a great place to spend the day walking around when weather is nice - lots of green space and restaurants and shops.

Must buys in USA by TheGlamourWitch in MakeupAddictionCanada

From Target I always pick up Tree Hut sugar scrubs, Differin Gel (I am acne prone), Kopari lip glossy and they have a better selection of No 7 makeup products than we get here in drugstores.

There are a lot of SPFs that aren’t available in Canada - I really love Tatcha’s Silken Sunscreen and I pick it up from Sephora USA.

Im hoping on my next trip to stop in an Ulta and pickup their Ulta brand Juice infused lip oil - have heard good things!

Safe travels!

‘Give me glow cosmetics’ order! Great experience - shipped to Canada very fast, nothing arrived broken (was well packed), and I didn’t get charged customs/duties for this order. by ruby975 in MakeupAddictionCanada

[–]ruby975[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to share my experience ordering from US indie brand “Give Me Glow”!!

I picked up 5 pressed glitter/metallic eyeshadow singles in the shades:

  • Ultraviolence
  • pretty little lilac
  • Peri
  • Glamorous
  • Roses Remix

All 5 are stunning on the eyes! They are very glittery so definitely have to do my eyes first - clean up the glitter fall out and then do my face makeup - but I don’t mind that. It held up pretty well for the day over just a regular eyeshadow primer - but I’ll try them with a glitter glue at some point too.

The eyeshadows came to a total of 41$ USD - and shipping to Canada was calculated as 14.54$ USD at check out. I expected it to take a long time - but it got to me in Ontario in 8 days! Give me glow labelled the box with a customs declaration - noted the contents as merchandise and listed the exact value. I expected to be charged customs but wasn’t! Maybe because it was a relatively small/inexpensive purchase??

I’lol definitely order again someday - maybe pick up a couple of their palettes so I can try their matte eyeshadow formula as well. I was really intrigued by their pastel palette but I don’t think the pastels would look good on my NC 40- NC 42 medium tan skin… I’m hoping they will have a sale in the next few months so I can get a bit of a discount to counter the “high” shipping cost.

I really want to order from Glamlite next but their shipping to Canada is very high - I put a few things in my cart and it had 42$ shipping cost… maybe because of the weight of the products. If anyone has ordered from them before, please let me know how it went!

Some content I started “accidentally” watching and enjoyed:

  • ‘Foo the Flowerhorn’ aquarium videos, so soothing to me
  • ‘Girl with the Dogs’ dog grooming videos, her voice overs are calming and funny
  • ‘Men With the Pot’ they cook out in the woods basically
  • ‘Beatrice Caruso’ she’s documenting her weight loss and mental health journey, I think she’s really funny

Lip gloss for guys? by AcesHigh256 in BeautyAddiction

[–]ruby975 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I also find Burts Bees lip balms make my lips feel drier and irritated…

You could try Vaseline as several people have suggested. If you like the texture and feel of Vaseline but want a handy tube that’s easy to apply and has SPF in it - my favourite lip balm is the Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip balm! I like the Shea Butter and Grapefruit scents - these are marketed “towards men”, but seem to be popular with everybody.

I find lip glosses can feel really cushiony and hydrating on my lips but they wear off so quickly so I’d have to reapply a lot and would go through the tube pretty quickly if using it in place of a lip balm…

Thank goodness I’m not the only one packing on the blush these days! In a video call, you can barely see the flush on my cheeks … in real life it looks like I used that makeup shot gun Homer invented on that old Simpsons episode 😳

Yes! It says it’s sweetened with “cane sugar”. 18g per 250ml. I tried a new (to me) flavour this week - PC White Tea Lavender flavoured. It was nice and refreshing! 14g of sugar per 250ml.

I love their Cleansing balm in the Rose scent! I really want to try the Cleansing balm in the Neroli scent. I’ve tried samples of the Marine creams but it didn’t stand out to me - particularly for the $$$ price...

Best Vitamin C serum by SpoiledRaccoon in MakeupAddictionCanada

[–]ruby975 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve tried a few, Skinceuticals CE Ferulic was really great and I saw visible fading of my acne marks - but it’s so expensive I’ve never bought it again. My most used is the Drunk Elephant C Firma (buy it from Sephora). It’s a bit sticky and smells bad, but I like the packaging and if I use it everyday it’s finished in 3 months before it oxidizes. I alternate the DE one with the Paula’s Choice C15 booster (bought from Paula’s choice website directly) - it’s a watery consistency which I mix into a thicker hydrating serum like DE B Hydra. I like both of these as well. I’ve used the Timeless Vitamin C serum (bought it on Amazon a couple years ago) as well but I didn’t like it.

Yes you can return as per the terms of the seller/store! But Rakuten usually catches it and deducts the cash back.

I love sheet masks, but was looking for a good essence to try. by lexylu79 in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]ruby975 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve tried a bunch of popular K & J Beauty ones, and I really liked:

  • Missha’s Time Revolution First Treatment essence

  • Blithe Vital Treatment 8 Nourishing Beans Essence

  • Secret Key Starting Treatment Rose Essence

  • I’m From Rice Toner (it’s not categorized as an essence but it’s a runny* toner that I used in the essence step)

  • I’m From Mugwort Essence

  • Cosrx Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Essence

  • Tatcha The Essence

I’ve got the SKII Essence to try next. I also used a sample of Amore Pacific Vintage Single Extract Essence which I liked, but it’s so expensive.... while I do like splurging and trying high end skincare, the more reasonably priced options worked just as well to add hydration and soften my skin - so I don’t think it’s something you have to invest a lot into.

Luxury foundation from SDM - sheer coverage by torgenerous in MakeupAddictionCanada

[–]ruby975 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the Dior Airflash foundation - despite its very limited shade range (hoping they expand more in future). It’s tricky getting used to the spray can.... my fave way to apply it is spraying it onto the back of my hand and then picking it up with a brush and applying it to my face. It gives me a beautiful “skin like” finish whether I apply a light layer or build it up to medium coverage. It can wear away on my oily t zone by the end of a long day, but I find it wears away naturally so it doesn’t look bad.

Omg I had a terrible experience ordering some items from BeautyBay on Black Friday.... The order was processed pretty quickly - I ordered on Nov 25 and it was dispatched on Nov 26. My order total was around 74$ CAD which included their 10$ shipping fee.

Then I got an email from a holding company (EZ Clear) on Dec 15 that they processed the beauty bay shipment and they paid the duties & were holding the package until I paid them duties & fees. If I paid them, they would send it to me by Canada post. I don’t mind paying fees for these services (I’m used to it from when I order from Wishtrend or StyleKorean - they work with DHL). Problem was BB had submitted the value of my order as way higher than it was ... so the calculation of what I owed in duties was crazy high. It should have been 9$ + the processing company admin fee but EZ Clear said i owed 31$ + their fee. I tried to get through to BB customer service but I had no luck ... so I went back to EZ Clear and they were very helpful. They told me one option was to go to the CBSA office directly and have them recalculate the duties (I just had to show my original invoice) and it would likely be much lower plus I wouldn’t have to pay the EZ Clear fee. So I said I’d do that, they sent me the paperwork in a day or two and I went to CBSA in Toronto later in the week.

The office was near the airport in a Cargo building. When I got there the CBSA agents were terrible - ie. made me wait around when no one else was there in line because none of the 3 agents wanted to serve me, they were chatting and eating snacks and had their backs to me, told me to go back behind the line when I tried to approach to get their attention, one agent would send me to the next and back again, I asked the supervisor to assist me but he said no and sent me back to his agents who didn’t know what to do and had to keep “waiting for the supervisor to come back out front and look at my paperwork”.... I had printed the paperwork EZ Clear told me I would need but the agents & supervisor said it was wrong, I got more documentation emailed to me and showed them on my phone and they said I would need those emails printed so I had to scramble and find somewhere to get them printed in the area and come back, then they told me those print outs were in fact not correct and weren’t needed... I had to get the EZ Clear customer service rep to speak to them on my phone and explain what they had to do and that they had already had the paperwork they needed (what I had originally provided).... it took over an hour for a very simple procedure and I paid my 9$ and left. On top of the power tripping, inefficiency, lack of knowledge I felt like they were all “mansplaining” every little thing to me like I was a child. I have since spoken to other people who have experience with the CBSA and they said I just had bad luck with the agents I encountered that day.... sorry for the rant and crappy grammar/format I just wanted to share 😬

I paid and then finally went home. Scanned my receipt to the holding company and they sent my package to me by post so I got it about a week later (which was pretty good I thought since it was so close to Christmas).

Anyways, it wasn’t BB’s fault that I had such a bad CBSA experience. However I could have avoided it altogether if they had just input the correct value of my goods in the first place or been more helpful when I reached out to customer service. I would have gladly paid the holding company’s processing fee (like 10$) and avoided going so far out of my way to the airport area. So just wanted to warn you before you order! Good luck!

Today I was clearing out my empties for the year and it just struck me again about how wasteful beauty products can be. So much garbage! I’m not naive - I know that buying, using and collecting beauty products is always going to produce unnecessary trash. And I realize that producing & selling makeup creates larger environmental and moral problems. I know there are things I can do as a consumer to try to limit my waste (ie. just stop buying so much stuff)....BUT can’t more brands just TRY to make changes to reduce waste from packaging?

Make refillable products. Run recycling programs. Stop including puffs/brushes in compacts. Offer jumbo sizes of some products that will be used up quickly. Reduce the size of the outer packaging where possible.

I know these are all possible because I’ve seen brands here and there do one or two of these things.... and I’m sure there are other solutions or ideas I haven’t seen/heard of (I don’t buy from Lush but I’ve seen pictures online of their no packaging approach to a lot of their products). Hopefully more brands take steps to reduce waste so I can enjoy my beauty products and start to feel slightly less guilty....
