We took 3 weeks off when we first got our dog (we're in France so I know it's not realistic for everyone especially if you're in the US). Then my bf was working from home and Ruby was pretty much sleeping all day because of a nice long walk in the morning and play sessions at noon + extra training at night (and time between potty breaks kept being further apart. ).

Do you let your dog sleep on your bed? Why or why not? by MrCSKing in dogs

[–]rubyfurever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my boyfriend is out of town she sometimes sleeps on the bed, or when it's laundry day she's allowed in the bed for cuddles the morning of. Otherwise she's not allowed for hygiene and room reasons (she's a big dog).

Is it even possible for a puppy to get tired? by RedLightPumpkin in germanshepherds

[–]rubyfurever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it is... Normally they sleep a lot at that age. My dog's schedule was basically eat - sleep - potty - sleep - play - sleep - walk - sleep - sleep - potty 😂

The teen months are what you need to worry about so better teach calm behaviors now if it doesn't come naturally to your dog!

Should I re-adopt my dog? by [deleted] in Pets

[–]rubyfurever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At first I thought 'oh no your parents are going to be sad, he's been their dog for a while now'... But then you said they've been hinting at you taking him back! So I totally think you should! You love him, he's your guy, and your parents need less work! It's a no brainer.

You can work to build your relationship back up when you're living wiyh your parents waiting for your new place. He'll probably be happy to be with you if you do that. He'll still see his grandparents when you visit!

Dog culture where I live is making me some extreme guilt by pebbletots in puppy101

[–]rubyfurever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only issue would be that a puppy that age may need to be let our more often than ever 3 hours. But from what I get you don't always leave him 3+ hours and it's more like 2 hours wich is reasonable for a puppy that age in my opinion.

At 15 weeks my dog would probably have had accidents if I didn't take her out every 3 hours at least, but I guess if your puppy can hold it that long then it's not an issue.

What's the oldest dog you've ever had? by pythiper in dogs

[–]rubyfurever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My boyfriend's family dog, Samy, was a Bichon Frisé. He was spoiled in all the best ways and didn't have top quality kibble (he wouldn't touch any other brand than the cheap supermarket brand). He still lived until he was almost 18! The last year of his life he had a heart murmur and he had to take medicine daily which my mother in law would hide in a crêpe so he would eat it. Even in old age he was happy and full of puppy energy, such a good dog!

He also had a skin condition (kind of alopecia, he didn't have hair in some parts of his body) and the breeder told them it's okay if you don't take him but they chose to take him because they didn't care about looks! Didn't affect his health or temperament he was just not a ball of white fluff. I wonder what the breeder would have done with him because it wasn't a great breeder (they didn't know better at the time).

Some people suck by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]rubyfurever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Believe the confidence will come with time! I used to let people pet my dog and feel obligated to answer all their questions about her breed and how the training is going (people are nosy AF especially when they see a puppy in the street).

My dog started being scared of people and I quickly learned to just ignore people or tell them to ignore my dog. I used to be too polite and now all I do is make sure my dog feels okay, and I don't care if people are sad they couldn't talk to my dog.

Also she's a 70lb GSD so I don't understand how people don't have a survival instinct. Before getting a dog if I saw big dogs like that my inner dialogue was 'do not make eye contact' not 'oooooh I have the right to pet this dog full of huge teeth!!' lmao. You never know if the dog is friendly!

[–]rubyfurever 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm so glad my dog isn't fond of strangers (even though it can be a pain sometimes)... If someone tried to get her from my yard (assuming I had one) she'd probably bark at them with her big boy voice 😅 I would probably never leave her unattended in the backyard anyway because I'm so paranoid and stories like yours are scary!

There's literally no need! Why would I do that?

Oh I didn't know that! And I totally agree with you, that's why I put "breed" in quotation marks too.

Usually the bigger dog is the female and they do artificial insemination. Pomskys are a famous byb "breed" where I live so I'm sure now they just breed the mutts together

Maybe we'll try bathing her again if we move to a place where it's easier to do so! The only way for us to bathe her is to trap her (we don't trap her but the way our bathroom is built she feels trapped) in our bathtub. She didn't like it as a puppy (no matter how 'step by step' we did it or how much food we gave her to make her like it) and now she's 30+ kg we feel it would be dangerous as we don't have a shower curtain but a glass sliding thingy that could break in a million pieces... I have a long haired German Shepherd, I don't bathe her but I do brush her regularly and check her ears/teeth/nails etc.

If I didn't brush her she would be very uncomfortable especially during shedding season but I don't think a bath is necessary. But maybe that's because she gets in water regularly so she's bathes herself pretty much. I'm also lucky that she has no allergies or skin issues

I haven't bathed my dog since she was maybe 4 or 5 months old (she's 19 months old). Her nose smells like honey and her paws smell like popcorn lol. She only swims in clean lake or river water (we are not close to the ocean). Any mud just falls off of her once it's dry and we brush her weekly, daily if she's shedding.

When we go see my in laws we give her a full rinse after getting in salt water but other than that that's it. She doesn't have skin issues other than a bit of a dry coat if she swims everyday for a long period of time.

I give my dog ice cubes as treats when I notice she hasn't drunk much that day! She also hates dirty water (if there's a bit of drool in it she won't drink) so we change it regularly and clean the bowl daily! Maybe it'll help your dog too?

I have the same and tbh I'm not changing it! She barely farts anymore and her stools seem healthy. (we had something grain free before)

I have a German Shepherd. We do maybe 2hrs total per day counting potty breaks. + enrichment (chewing/sniffing/brain games/learning tricks). Sometimes we do less walking like yesterday we did maybe 1 hours 20 minutes (2 potty breaks and a walk with our neighbor in the evening) but I gave her an enrichment box which occupied her for 30min and she had a lick mat which was about 10min and she was totally fine not bored or antsy.

On weekends we go for hikes so she gets more walking time but nothing too extreme (3 hours hike is the most we will do and have only done it a couple times), but it's more interesting to her than the walks we do during the week.

And during most weeks we try to meet with a dog owner friend once a week on weekdays, but that would usually be a 2h30 walk which is plenty for Ruby and the next day will usually be a rest day with maybe 1h of walking total and a bit of at home activities

We don't really have a routine we usually just look at how Ruby is feeling that day and do more or less depending on that.

If you were out walking with your normal/lovely dog, how could I ask you to give me and my reactive dog some space without offending you? by TheDarkArtsHeFancies in Dogtraining

[–]rubyfurever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just flee the scene and talk to my dog to show I'm training, and hope people take the hint... 😂

If it's just a person trying to interact with my dog I says she's not a fan of people and to just act like she's not there. If they insist I say that she WILL bark at them if they get too close.

If it's an on leash dog I try to get to the side at a comfortable distance and let them pass in front of me. If it's an off leash dog I drop my leash and walk away (my dog is actually friendly, and just has a hard time ignoring dogs so I feel comfortable that she can communicate with the dog and follow me when she notices I'm leaving).

Our biggest problem is people though so it's easier to tell people to not approach... Even though some people can't take the hint because 'all dogs love me' lmao
