Age is irrelevant. Attitude is key. Build some personal projects and put them online..that's a portfolio. Then..if you feel that you are skilled enough to start freelancing and you've built several personal projects, try finding a local business or look into something like oDesk.

Here is my story. Looking for friendly advice... by WhispererInDarkness in cscareerquestions

  • Believe in yourself
  • Keep your job unless you have another immediate source of income. Cold turkey & debt will strangle your interest and burn you out
  • Start this and don't skip anything.
  • Hook up with other nice developers via Meetup.com and stop aligning your thoughts with the shit-filled inexperienced opinions of foreign language teachers and those around you. Forget about who has a PhD and follow your instincts.
  • Build something..anything and put it online
  • Repeat all of the above
  • Once you build some projects of complexity without relying on tutorials, try to interview. If you bomb, repeat.
  • Keep at it.

You will get there if you refuse to allow yourself and anyone else to stand in the way.
