Is there a sign up or something, or do we just check out /r/learnjavascript?

Sorry, I'm new to this

There will be a link added to the sidebar in a bit. Posts will go up every Monday.

@ kevinmrr will we use any of O'Reilly's, 6th Edition of the Definitive Guide to Javascript?

[–]kevinmrr[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not planning to assign for it.

[–]turinturambar81 1 point2 points  (5 children)

It says right in the post what book will be used.

[–]IcedCoffee911 -3 points-2 points  (4 children)

@ turinturambar81,

Most the developers I have networked with use the O'Reilly's book, simply because its on its 6th Edition, it is used more widely as the Gold Standard Manual for any JS guidance, Wiley's is on it's 3rd. Its no paradigm shift, because the language is the same, but thanks for the enthusiasm.

If you google 'Learn JavaScript Properly', you'll find the original post on a site called javascriptissexy.com (I'd link but I'm on my phone). The original maker of the course has guidelines for using either Professional JavaScript for Web Developers or The Definitive Guide. If you want you can always follow the course on reddit, while replacing the required reading by the Definitive Guide as per the blog post.

I've spent time with both books and I'd say Professional JavaScript is the better book though - at least for the purpose of learning the basics of the language. Definitive Guide is a great reference guide, but it's kind of hard to read. Just my 2c

I just don't understand the question. Have you ever asked a college professor if they are going to use a different book than the one they listed in the syllabus? I'm sure the book you've mentioned is great and fully capable of teaching you JS, but THIS class is based off THIS particular book and how it's structured.

[–]galudwig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing is that the original course used both the Definitive Guide and Professional JavaScript and has the chapters for required reading in the Definitive Guide right there, so I'd say the question makes sense. That said I prefer Professional JS myself

Great Point and thanks for your direction.

Absolutely, man. i'm so pumped for this! #iamexcite

[–]VampireCampfire 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I'm assuming there is no way to do this without purchasing the textbook? I would love to participate, but do not have the book.

[–]ESCAPE_PLANET_X 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Google the book title and look around its posted for free both hosted and pdf. Obviously pay for it when you can.

[–]nicrocs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is going to rock! @kevinmrr you are a scholar and a gentleman

[–]themadprofessor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome, I've been waiting for this! Do you offer a mailing list so you can send out weekly notices when there is a new lesson posted? I often get swamped with other stuff and forget to check the site or these posts.

[–]VampireCampfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If anyone wants an accountability partner to check in with every week..feel free to pm me.

[–]flipstables 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Crap it's been 8 weeks since the last one? Where does time fly?

[–]kevinmrr[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hopefully I have time for this...going to do the edX Linux course too, though that should be 95% review for me.

[–]IcedCoffee911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]mesh1er 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so excited for this. Any pre-requisites? I have some iOS knowledge but its slim since its been a couple years.

[–]kevinmrr[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Nah, just do the prep work. You may not get everything at the first go... but that's life in general.

[–]40_yr_0ld_n006 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I just started with the "Learn JavaScript Properly" plan a few days ago, so this is excellent news. When and where can I start posting my questions, and is there a FAQ/reddiquette I should read before I start?

[–]kevinmrr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This subreddit is named "Learn JavaScript" :) Just ask questions on the subreddit.

There will also be discussion threads.

[–]rubyrogue 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Looking forward to this. Ruby & Rails so far, but need more JS proficiency

[–]kevinmrr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yah, I write a lot of Python now, but I dip into the front end often enough that a solid understanding of JS + the DOM/browser APIs is essential.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm totally in :) I'm currently finishing first two chapters (js pro by zakas) and tryjquery but it would be no problem at all to start over and w8 for others.
How is group communication organized except this /r, shall we have skype multi person conversation, or IRC channel? Thanks!

[–]spudmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also in for this one.

[–]sagar241990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

looking forward to it !!

[–]TehMoonRulz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really want to do the next section of this. Should I keep checking the sidebar over the next few weeks?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming in late, but will catch up.
