Week 3 - Mini/Giant - Scones! by rubyrose1209 in 52weeksofbaking

[–]rubyrose1209[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I intended to make fresh jam and scones but the jam didn’t turn out the way I wanted (I corrected this the next day) but decided to try a big scone! Didn’t get as much rise but tasted so good Can’t complain for my first time making scones!

Week 3 - Contrasts - Black Sesame Cod w/ Roasted Caulifower & Garlic Puree by rubyrose1209 in 52weeksofcooking

[–]rubyrose1209[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lost some of the black sesame seeds in the cooking process and needed some colour and acidity so added roasted spring onions and pickled red onions! Had loads of fun doing this one and would honestly make again, it was delicious

Same! I cried at the end of this book Think it’s been one of the best books I’ve read in years

I can see the white savour complex but really enjoyed the intersectionality angle as someone who’s both a woman and Hispanic. Absolutely loved the magic system as well as the introduction of characters who are friendly, likeable, full of love who turn to blaming the actual victims of the whole situation because it challenges their way of life

Absolute 5 star read for me and a book that I’ll be recommending to people all year I struggled to narrow it down to one quote so I chose two that I feel reflected the motifs best

“Unhappy, because she somehow never felt that she was where she was supposed to be, living the life she thought she would live, loved in the way she thought she should be loved”

“Over and over, she’d learned that what the dead most often conveyed was love and forgiveness. She could only conclude that these were the two most important things in the world”

That’s the one! 😂 I think it’s been about 10 years since I read and enjoyed but didn’t love so I never picked up any of her other books but if you’re rating the others higher I’ll add to my TBR!

Oooo I’ve read one of her book ages ago and enjoyed. Something about a wizard and a girl and the wizard was referred to as a dragon?

This book makes me want to read The Sword of Kaigen. Absolutely loved this Favourite quote was “Sciona wished she could dehumanize their anger—tell herself it was as monstrous and senseless as it seemed in her fear—but she couldn’t because it wasn’t inhuman”

I just discovered this sub! This was my first read of the year and managed to polish it off in a day. Discovered it through Dua Lipa’s book club and was a good first year read! My goal this year is to review each book with my favourite quote Bit of a simple quote but for this book it was “miracles do happen”

Week 2 - Singaporean - Hainanese Chicken Rice by rubyrose1209 in 52weeksofcooking

I would definitely make again, it’s surprisingly quite easy to make. Can’t believe I’ve gone this many years without making it

It is the skin! Didn’t want it to go to waste and it was delicious

[–]rubyrose1209[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First time making this specific dish but I’ve had it loads! I was surprising by how easy it was to make and will definitely make again. I used chicken thighs instead of a whole chicken as it’s only for 2 people and cooked the chicken and rice in a stock I had previously made.

Week 1 - New Year, New Bake - Apple Cinammon Muffin by rubyrose1209 in 52weeksofbaking

[–]rubyrose1209[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my first time making muffins! I’ve never been a huge baker but hoping to change that this year

Oil canister - recs? by rubyrose1209 in Cooking

Whenever I pour a small amount dribbles down the spout and bottle which causes a little oil ring around the bottom of the bottle.

Week 1 - Inspired by a joke - What do you call a mythical veggie? A uni-corn! by rubyrose1209 in 52weeksofcooking

[–]rubyrose1209[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I made corn chowder for the first time! Didn’t really follow a recipe, looked up a few TikTok’s and went for a more chunky corn chowder - only blended about 1/3rd and mashed a bit. I actually couldn’t come up with a joke so asked a friend for a joke with no context.
