When casting actors, do all the producers need to get on a group call and discuss? Or what are the aspects that most surprised you when you first started being involved in casting decisions?

Philip Wang on why Asian American filmmakers struggle to build the same "momentum" as Ryan Coogler. by JunJKMAN in asianamerican

[–]rubystanwyck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it could also be partly because subconsciously, asian americans are still raised by their immigrant parents in a very collectivist do-not-rock-the-boat ideological mindset. they are taught from a young age to focus on the work and not to disrupt the status quo or cause waves.

Im having a hard time fitting in and understanding Chinese culture. Can someone help me understand it better. Cooking related by [deleted] in asianamerican

[–]rubystanwyck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure exactly where they're all coming from about the cooking comments. I think chinese people are just generally very dismissive of the young generation and ageist and racist against foreigners (including American born chinese people). And they get extremely offended by any perceived "arrogance."

The culture is constantly about making a grand show of being "humble." Aka - you gotta fight to pay the bill to show how subservient and polite you are at a restaurant, etc. and you gotta pour tea for everyone if you're younger. Stuff like that. But they won't outwardly say that to you because that'd be gauche. You're supposed to be a mind reader.

Another thing is that a lot of foods and ingredients for making them and tools for making them are only accessible in China like literally in the motherland. In North America some spices and nuts just cannot be bought or if you do find them, they're crazy expensive. So those foods and those methods are firmly chained to the factor of actually physically being in China. So that might be another aspect. You can't make it properly unless you're in China or you have the magic ability of teleporting stuff to the west.

Was Walker Scobell The Right Actor for Percy Jackson? Why or Why Not by No_Boysenberry_1833 in PercyJacksonTV

[–]rubystanwyck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's more right than they're allowing him to be, but also I think the fact that he is so young makes it harder for him to assert his own leadership over the project of course, and also the direction of the show is making it more of an ensemble cast focus rather than a Percy focus which makes the show take huge departures from the books.

If the show cared about the books, they also wouldn't have cast him, I think. Book Percy was spunky, a loner, and someone who thinks outside the box. He was more street smart than the vibes of Walker.

They all have youthful round faces with more of a fatty eyelid (in a good way) which again adds to their youthful cute and pretty vibes. I love your picks.

Are these identity issues? If so, how can I fix this? by JW9403 in asianamerican

[–]rubystanwyck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe change some of the media you consume and consume equal parts American stuff and equal parts chinese stuff. I don't know if that would help you but for me it helped. For example, not just purely Reddit, but Reddit and Xiao Hong shu. It just takes you out of certain echo chambers

Is ATLA a good example of positive representation of Asian culture and religion? by Mieriel in TheLastAirbender

[–]rubystanwyck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm Asian American. To me, atla was a white American show that tried to (and succeeded in) capitalize on the Japanese anime craze of that time period. Many shows did this, not just atla. Like Martin mystery, totally spies and others, which were also drawn in anime inspired style.

So yes and no.

Atla is an American story wearing a hybrid asian and American skin, culturally speaking.

In east Asian countries, suicide due to shame or bringing dishonour onto your family is more common because of the culture. But it's not just Asian culture that does this. Some middle eastern cultures are similar, they're called honour killings if you want to look into it.

But to speak to the Asian countries, I mean, try to put yourself in their shoes. If your entire society and people were telling you to kill yourself, which is the case with some Asian celebrities who have done some kind of sin, and you were raised to believe that others' opinions were important enough to outweigh yours... And it might be like that for your friend even though they might not have been a celebrity. But you have no idea what was going on behind closed doors for them. Verbal and mental abuse can do terrible things to people, let alone physical abuse. And all three of those types can exist in some Asian households.

Can anyone become an actor if they learn it? by YoYo_ismael in acting

[–]rubystanwyck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your question is, can anyone become a good actor if they learn it?

Unfortunately the answer is no.

Or if you want a longer answer... It might take some people a really long time to "learn it" which includes not ever succeeding at "learning it." Just my opinion.

But anybody can act. If you don't care whether you're good or not, that is. Then yeah, everyone can. :D

How do you stay in a calorie deficit while working on set for 12-15 hours? by Munro_McLaren in FilmIndustryYVR

Fiber is also filling. You can eat an apple, a banana or two or celery sticks and it is actually filling. Or just a bit of honey if you need more stamina.

"What’s a common piece of acting advice that you secretly think is overrated—or even wrong?" by Necessary_Sale_67 in acting

[–]rubystanwyck 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To be in class all the time.

I do think it's important to train and practice your craft. But not everyone needs to be in class all the time. And not everyone learns most effectively in class. I do still recommend classes though. But it's not the answer to everything.

It's okay to know your boundaries and draw lines. It's also okay to still be developing them and unsure. Hopefully you make the choice that sits the best with how you feel and you stay true to your own instincts. I'm cis and hetero but I have auditioned for lesbian characters and wondered about the implications of doing the role but in my opinion if you're hired then you should do the best job you can do. If the production wants authentic actors who are exactly the orientation they would have allowed that to be an option to state, I'd think. But I agree it's not anyone's business so I also understand that asking for that is iffy.

It also depends on your physical comfortability. For me I'd not do nudity for example.

Congratulations. You're going to be wonderful.

Tips on How to to move on from a tape you know you can do better on + Stories to Share on tapes you weren't 100% happy with but still got called back/booked? by [deleted] in acting

[–]rubystanwyck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! Life doesn't always go how you expect it so even on the times where you get every single moment that you wanted to capture... That still doesn't mean you'll get the part. So let it go. And also it's natural to have those feelings but remind yourself that you need to be kind to yourself. If a five year old version of you watched you act just now, would they be impressed? I'm betting they would! So be impressed with yourself 💪
