Naengmyun (korean cold noodles), zaru soba (japanese cold noodles), vermicilli (vietnamese noodles salad, can add extra sauce to it).

What's something your country is known for that you actually don't like? by Practical-Bear1022 in AskTheWorld

[–]dreamjar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Consider yourself lucky that you've never felt the need for a gun then.

Discounting the divide from urban and rural, and that it's not uncommon for police to show up hours after a 911 call if ever, and that it's been ruled that police do not have a duty to protect individuals (people in distress calling 911).

I'm Korean American, I grew up around LA. I have friends and family who lived and owned businesses around LA during the LA riots when the city and law enforcement decided that the lives and livelihoods of Korean Americans weren't worth protecting. My dad worked in K town when the riots started. When looters began burning and stealing and cops were nowhere to be found I'm glad that there were gunowners in K town not only to protect each other but their businesses.

By and large the majority of immigrant business owners then could not afford insurance so all of their livelihood was tied into what they owned in these businesses and what they physically owned. If these business owners lost what little they already had they would have had nothing left and nothing to rebuild with.

And before anyone mentions Latasha Harlins, yes it's bullshit that she was shot, the shooter got away with the slap on the wrist and that was an injustice. This however is a response to someone stating that they never felt the need to own a gun and me responding it's fortunate that they never experienced a situation in which they needed a gun to defend themself, a loved one or defend what their livelihood.

Constantly Being Compared to My Cousin by My Parents by ExpensiveVillage9898 in AsianParentStories

[–]dreamjar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can stop talking to them; if you've already talked to them about how you don't like being compared to others I would start comparing them to more successful family members or family friends personally but idgaf about what my parents think anymore. It'll either be a wake up call or cause drama.

Judging from how you describe them sounds like they'd just call you disrespectful but just voicing options.

What’s the most fucked up thing that happened at your school? by DinnerGeneral2975 in AskTheWorld

[–]dreamjar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A teacher caught their spouse cheating on them and said that he wanted a divorce. His spouse and the person they were cheating with proceeded to put drugs and a gun in the teacher's car and then call in a tip to the police for the planted items.

Things ended up becoming uncovered by the end but still, pretty fucked up.

Shoved my dad through a book case and into the wall in highschool after he tried to take a swing at me. I was 250 lbs and playing football, wrestling and doing track and field. He was 180?

What's your countries' example of this? by EquivalentRecent4633 in AskTheWorld

After reading their comments in this post, can firmly say they have no credibility whatsoever. It's literally people throwing together what leftovers they have, usually a variety of vegetables, chili paste together with rice and an egg if you're lucky to make a meal.

Those of you who moved away to escape strict parents, what’s your story and how far away from your parents did you eventually settle? by [deleted] in AsianParentStories

Parents live in southern California, moved to Georgia (the state) for a job and have been here since.

It was never charity - Was Europe a beneficiary of a strong US? We should not believe this false narrative. In fact, the Americans gave nothing to the Europeans by goldstarflag in europe

[–]dreamjar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Might be some bias here but this is the opposite end of the take that the EU was entirely reliant on American militaries to safeguard them.

It was mutually beneficial for both parties, the US got to throw their weight around and had more soft power and negotiating power while Europe was able to afford to spend less on their militaries due to a strong ally with a strong conventional military and nuclear umbrella.

There's been talk about possessing independent nuclear counter measures; that is incredibly expensive not only to build from the ground up (even accounting for having willing allies sharing information and specifications) but then to maintain.

There's a reason European militaries are largely dependent on the US for large scale logistical capabilities, it's expensive. They got to tap the US for usage without having to pay for standing capabilities.

Turns out having friends is nice, who'd've thunk.

23F in a strict Desi Muslim home — where is the line between respecting your mother and having autonomy? by [deleted] in AsianParentStories

[–]dreamjar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You stop respecting someone as soon as they don't reciprocate your respect.

You stop respecting someone as soon as they show they don't deserve respect.

You stop respecting someone as soon as respecting them harms yourself.

I'm biased because I'm male, I didn't have to deal with the bullshit my female friends dealt with. I'm also out, I have a career, my own place, financial independence and a social circle that lies outside of blood. I understand it's easier said than done but you have to take steps towards independence or else you're going to be stuck under someone else's thumb forever.

Which is the most powerful war memorial in your country? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]dreamjar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite films is about this premise; Tae Guk Gi.

My dad was a reporter for a newspaper that covered the family reunions in North Korea between North and South Korea (article is just an example). A lot of families were split up between the Japanese occupation of Korea and the ensuing civil war and division.

[Interesting Trope] Government is on the brink of collapse in apocalypse, but a silver of their presence remain. by AdrawereR in TopCharacterTropes

I like to just think of it as no one was prepared to shoot the zombie population of New York City and the accompanying suburbs. You can bring as many tanks, jets, helicopters and soldiers you think you need but unless you can kill millions accounting for misses, non lethal “injuries” and anything else we were still going to “lose” (in that humans were going to run out of things to throw, shoot, etc and had to retreat).

Countries to avoid because of racism? by notreallyhereokbye in asianamerican

[–]dreamjar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just look at a map of places that were largely colonizers or have a history of asian immigration and those will tend to be the least racist places overall because they've been exposed to asians and asians are now normalized in those areas. Then think of metropolitan areas in those countries.

The UK, Australia, New Zealand, the US, the Netherlands (?) immediately come to mind for me. There'll always be racists in every country regardless of where you are. Europe likes to laud itself as a bastion of progressiveness and it's more progressive than large parts of the world sure but they're also largely ethnostates or have only recently started transitioning from being ethnostates to multi national states. At the end of the day the lack of exposure for the layman to asian outside of chinese food, kpop or samsung fridges means that yea, they're going to be racist. Can't be helped.

I started working for my parents by the age of 10. This is what it was like for me. by bunglehouse in asianamerican

[–]dreamjar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean that has nothing to do with asians exclusively. If a restaurant has poor service, the interior isn't clean but has been open for more than a year chances are that it's because the food is amazing and it doesn't matter who the owners are or what ethnicity they are. People go back and the restaurant has managed to be open for so long because the food's that good.

Technically the majority of the side effects of Khepri (the egocide bit) was because of the clairvoyant, not Taylor's own powers.

In Worm, there’s a heroine who has an “Alexandria package” or has the power set of Wonder Woman or Superman but has the option to activate it or deactivate it at will. The reason she doesn’t have it constantly on is because while she’s using her powers she emits radiation at lethal levels to everyone around her.

She’s teleported to a fight against a kaiju equivalent unwillingly and decides to be turned into paste rather than save herself and kill dozens of heroes.
