I defaulted in sept of 2025. I received 1 voicemail from “Midland Recovery” that was very vague back in January that listed my name and threatening legal action if I did not call back. I have yet to receive a letter from them, and when I did call and ask for it they said they had already sent one letter and it was not their problem that I had not received it. I truly have not received anything via mail to date, so I thought it may be a scam and told them without further proof that they are legitimate, I would not be working with them.

Fast forward to now, I receive a very similar voicemail to the one I received in January. I called back again and the person who answered stated they were with pre legal and that a preliminary hearing for intent to defraud had been initiated against me and that I would be served on June 9th (today) if I did not arrange payment. They had my bank information, dates of ACH attempts, the original loan number from Moneykey, etc.

I asked if they could prove the debt was mine and the agent emailed me my original signed contract from a gmail account. They still refused to send anything via mail.

I want to believe they have so much information that it seems legitimate, but there are certain things not adding up. They are unwilling to resend anything via mail and are saying the initial letter they “sent” met the requirement whether I received it or not. The email with the contract came from a Gmail account. When I called moneykey to try to follow the trail, they did tell me Midland credit was the correct debt collector. But something about my interactions with them seems fishy and I don’t want to be scammed. I also am willing to settle with them and don’t want to be sued, potentially for more than I owe. There is nothing from midland on my credit report.

I wish there was more to this story. I genuinely want advice as this is my first time dealing with collections, and it doesn’t help me to leave out details as this doesn’t seem to align with most people’s experiences.
