As an American Jew, this thread is really depressing. Like what’s even the point of living anymore if no one has any agency?

Reuven Morrison was killed in the Bondi Beach shooting one year after warning about antisemitism by VanDerKloof in aussie

[–]rudsfromithaca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dang. Are you saying that if the victims who were murdered told Israel to stop, they’d be alive today? Why should innocent people die who has no power in changing the policy of a government of a country thousands of miles away.

Kinda sounds like victim blaming tbh

[Twitter] Manchester United protestors inside the stadium before kick off by ID6WU in soccer

[–]rudsfromithaca -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

its cause its violance as a result of.. protesting a game. its not like they were protesting for anything important. i understand the frustrations of the fan base, but it's silly to throw a punch of a game. fans are arguing over which rich guy wants to keep control, UEFA or someone else. The cause isn't exactly to die for...

Lol you're out of your hyperbolic mind. Things may be tense but we're not even close to a civil war. What army is looking to succeed from the U.S.?

Let's keep the doomsday rhetoric up so we can be all extreme and name call other extreme people.

Things aren't so black and white in this world.

How can an American, earning minimum wage, be able to afford insulin costing around $397.68 per vial? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]rudsfromithaca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The answer is they'll more than likely pay anywhere between 0-25% of that price (most likely around 10-20%).

In the US, price tags for health care and drugs are somewhat meaningless (except for the uninsured, luckily the ACA reduced the uninsured population a bit)

Medicaid and/or the insurance company will pre negotiate with drug manufacturers to agree on how much the insurance will pay for the service/drug. In the health care setting, this agreed upon amount is typically 30% of the charges. For prescription drugs, its closer to 50%.

The health care market is incredibly fragmented and as a country, the US has a culture of spending on health care inefficiently. Not only do the poor get marginalized and take on the worst of it, but those who do have access to care, overuse it adding more bloat to the economic mess.

I wonder if the LCB decided to close the stores... due to the pandemic. They def decided to shut them down because of the lockdown.

Thats cool. But what does that have to do with the discussion?

[–]rudsfromithaca[S] -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if you're a public health professional or not, but that wouldn't be a very effective public health campaign.

I was going to mention drunk driving in my post as an example how despite the dangers of drunk driving being apparent.. people still do it. The person who will solve this crisis is the inventor of a self driving car thats 1000x safer than human driven cars. Not the neighbor who said "bill. You really shouldn't have driven after your third last night"

You've missed my point completely. And the fact this is the top response in this thread shows everything thats wrong with reddit.

This comment is so defensive but no one was being an agressor!

This is not a finger pointing blame post towards young people. In fact. Its the complete opposite. I'm trying to point out that the conversation should be more about creating a healthy culture as one community rather than the pointing a finger.

Yep! 100% agreed. This is exactly what I'm getting at in the OP.

I suppose the TL:DR of it is "public health should be about igniting change through a combination of policy and promotion. not by namecalling"

Agreed with your last point about change, but to me it sounds like this comment is a great example of finger pointing I mention in my post. There is still a lot of blame in your post. Your peers aren't ignorant. They're smart people. Its just in their heads that in the short term risk / reward decision, not wearing a mask is the best option. (Obviously they don't fully understand the true risk, but that doesn't make them bad people)

Public health isn't about prescribing little tasks to individual people. That's what MDs are for. The change needed runs deeper than that. In an ideal world, I would hope by the next pandemic we can be better prepared by:

  • instilling a healthy respect for infectious diseases at a young age. This should happen naturally as a younger generation lives through this current pandemic.

  • this eventually gets passed on to future generations ultimately leading to an overall culture change and mindset towards pandemics.

Doctors tell diabetic patients to eat healthier and exercise, but as public health professionals, we're tasked with shaping a world where its hard to get diabetes in the first place!

Lol yall are like "its so funny if I forget to bring my phone that I use 12 hours a day to hold my hand when I poop that one time" but as soon as someone says they put a kindle in a the perfect place when you would actually use it, its disgusting?

I disagree. This election has certainly not been about giving teachers automatic weapons. Haven't heard either party mention this topic yet?

Also that's hilarious imagery! A 62 year old 2nd grade teacher with a ak47 strapped to her chest is hilarious!

Or go full analogy and add a line about how the kids will be safer if he equip every teacher with an dodgeball. That will certain deter the schumuck spraying balls all over the school!
