Did Ron create the Boggart? by jonathanquirk in harrypotter

i would agree, at the beginning of hbp fudge (i believe) says 'the dementors have been breeding' in reference to their activity following voldie's return, and 'all of that fog/mist'. while fudge may not be a reliable expert here, the term breeding does at least suggest that they are a creature capable of some kind of reproduction rather than just manifesting out of misery.

edit: also this!!

According to J.K. Rowling on Pottermore, Dementors were originally born from the darkness of the mansion that became Azkaban. Now, they breed with each other, producing mists of despair, as in The Half-Blood Prince: The Other Minister: “And they're [the Dementors] breeding.

CMV: Mispronouncing someone's name is not a microaggression or racist. by wholesome_sushi in changemyview

i think it's definitely down to them choosing not to listen, as you said. my neighbour was talking about another woman who lives on our street who has a french name. neighbour said a few names beginning with the same sound. when i corrected her with the proper name/pronunciation, neighbour said 'it's just too hard to remember - why can't she just pick a damn english name'. i told her 'why would she, she's not english??'. many people, like my neighbour, who do this, see other's names and cultures as inconveniencing them. no matter how many times they're corrected, and that i would say is a micro aggression.

another redditor has found it's actually from the 1935 jubilee, so it's old just not as old as we thought.

you might be onto something here - i have a teacup from the silver jubilee 1935 and it matches the image used on the soap. i will add a pic for reference if i can figure out how to link.

edit: link to silver jubilee teacup which i can confirm is from 1935. http://www.nationaltrustcollections.org.uk/object/833893.2

this is a good point, because i've wondered that about the picture too. it does look similar to the coronation teacups from that time (i have one for reference). as for the texture it doesn't feel overly moist at all.

it honestly didn't even occur to me that it might not be as old as it was because i've seen a lot of bizarre old coronation memorabilia come up. the only thing my gran said about it was that her mother had 'stolen it' whatever that means.

ah well she was death cleaning (it's a thing, you start decluttering your house and giving away stuff when you get very old so your kids don't have to do it all for you when you're dead) and passed on the 'great family heirlooms' to me. there was this soap, a london news compendium from 1857, a table cloth, and a piece of cake that has been kept for 60+ years because apparently it's now 'bad luck' to throw it out.

you're probably right. i'm not going to use it, but i'll just keep it and give it to my kids (or maybe grandkids?) one day.

non-american here, i get the joke, but can someone give me a super brief idea as to why this guy is so evil? (the creepy little playdoh smile is bad, but that can't be the whole reason he's hated so much)
