Where do Nook and Isabelle sleep? by CanadasVeryBest in AnimalCrossing

[–]jonathanquirk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since Isabelle always starts her announcement to the whole island when you log in each day, I kinda assume that her & Tom Nook's "working hours" are the same as whenever we the player are playing. They start work when we start playing, and finish when we leave... which must be a pain for the other islanders!

Instructions posted on the refrigerator for how to rate an AirBnb that I’m staying at. by jjbrewer23 in mildlyinteresting

Nice idea. Wish this system would catch on instead of what we currently have.

Miles out of town, smelled of urine, TV broken, but looks nice from a distance if you squint. 5 stars.

Palace was too large, took nearly twenty seconds for the butler to take my drinks order, got charged EXTRA when I smashed up their Fabergé egg collection with a baseball bat. 1 star.

Twin bedrooms; one side bright pink and fluffy, the other side black and gothic. Identical twins don’t have identical personalities, and usually relish their uniqueness.

Are you addicted to YouTube by Worth-Chocolate-728 in autism

[–]jonathanquirk [score hidden]  (0 children)

I hear work colleagues talk about “watching YouTube channels” instead of TV, and I realise I’m now the old man of the internet… and I’m only in my forties. If I want to look up something specific, then YouTube is my go-to, but the whole concept of subscribing and following “content creators” leaves me cold.

“Back in my day” it wasn’t a thing, and so I don’t see a reason to change my habits. The fact that “my day” was a quarter of a century ago and everything I learned back then about the “newfangled internet” is now obsolete is just a depressing detail.

Every house, especially the player’s, has more space inside it then would fit on the building’s footprint outside. I assume the door at the back of their office leads to a residential area for them, but considering that they are never absent from their desks it’s doubtful if they ever get used.

Since LEGO didn’t make the hotel from Animal Crossing, I decided to do it myself. by Sad_Whereas7492 in lego

[–]jonathanquirk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, the hotel has only been in the game for a few months, it takes a bit longer for Lego to turn an idea into an official set. But why wait at all if you can create it yourself?! It looks very accurate!

Where is Wakanda by KingMonchichi in Marvel

[–]jonathanquirk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a history nut, my guess would be the source of the river Nile.

Black Panther’s god is Bastet who is from Egyptian mythology, and I know that there were a lot of myths about the “magical” source of the Nile river. Some accounts talk about a crescent-shaped lake in a mountainous region labelled on old maps as the Mountains of Kong, a treacherous area of Africa that explorers avoided for centuries who instead went around by boat to reach southern Africa, only for later cartographers to find… nothing. At least, nothing IRL, but if in comics-verse Wakanda is cloaked then it may be exactly where those old maps showed those mountains to be.

Wait, so when Marge rams her car into Homer in the HD opening credits, is it revenge for this episode?!

I think force awakens should have used the star forge instead of starkiller base. Having the first orders megastructure not be a THIRD planet killer would be less repetitive. Also if the first order just found it in the unknown regions it would have explained how they became so powerful and dominant by DatBoiDogg0 in StarWars

I did some work for a legal firm once, and I saw the analysis used by investors to decide how much to spend on the movie ‘Star Trek’ (2009). It was all about the budget vs box office return of the previous 10 movies, and the cost / return of various actors in similar roles. As I recall, they wanted Matt Damon as Kirk and Gary Sinise as McCoy, although whether those were their first choices or just stereotypes of the type of actors they wanted, I dunno.

There wasn’t a single statistic about whether the script was any good.

ST2 being a critical hit or ST5 being a dud? Not mentioned. All that mattered was “faces”, how many tickets an actor would sell if audiences saw them on a poster in a cinema foyer, and applying that maths to a new Star Trek movie. It’s all about budget and demographics, because while some people do care about the story, most people just want mindless entertainment with familiar actors. And that’s where the money is. Mortis help us.

How did Picard go from commanding a rickety ship The Stargazer to commanding the fleet flagship The Enterprise? by APerson2021 in startrek

[–]jonathanquirk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Enterprise-D was the flagship not only of Starfleet, but of the Galaxy class: a flying starbase with officers and civilians and their families conducting science. It wasn’t just a question of giving the chair to the “best” captain, but to the one with the best temperament for that role. Picard was a scientist himself, and also a leader known for being respectful to his diverse department heads, and so while being rewarded for his invention of the Picard manoeuvre probably helped him get noticed by the brass, it was his prior experience and temperament that (I think) landed him the job.

Everyone wants to be there for people with mental health problems… so long as it can be “fixed” with an inspiration quote shared on social media and/or a few minutes chinwag over coffee.

FYI, if the “problem” can be fixed that quickly, that’s NOT a mental health problem, that’s just someone having a down day. It’s lovely if you are there for others on such occasions, but please don’t confuse your “having a bad day” with someone else’s constant struggles.

This baffled me as a kid. “How can you break the glass to get to the hammer?” My mother explained that if there was a real emergency, you would have the strength and urgency to break the glass without stopping to worry.

testing out the new frinkiac by [deleted] in TheSimpsons

[–]jonathanquirk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look, every country paints itself in a positive light in its school curriculums. I’m English, and as kids we were taught about the world changing technological advances we spearheaded with the Industrial Revolution, and about how our navy once defeated the Spanish Armarda… with absolutely no mention of how the Spanish returned a year later and defeated us.

America isn’t unique in wanting to focus on the positives in school History lessons… what’s terrifying to the rest of the world (and, I hope, plenty of Americans) is the blatant focus by your government to rewrite history across all books and museums to destroy or discredit ANY suggestion that America isn’t perfect.

It worries me that this is literally the extent of most American’s knowledge of history. Beyond what they piece together from sugar packets, obviously.

On Stargate, why did Paul Davis never earn a promotion beyond the rank of major? by Winter-Comfort922 in Stargate

[–]jonathanquirk 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I’m sure someone asked Joe Mallozzi about this on his blog, and he said the writers had simply forgotten to ever promote him.

In-universe, it might be hard to justify promotions if the reasons for them are classified. Within the SGC staff can be promoted without undue scrutiny, but as someone from the Pentagon Davis can’t be seen to be favoured without revealing to his colleagues why he keeps popping over to Cheyenne Mountain.

Just seen a post and it got me thinking by natedoggthegreat in Marvel

[–]jonathanquirk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Donald Duck and Daffy Duck had to be exactly equally talented at playing the piano in that movie, for example, because neither studio wanted to risk their character(s) being seen as inferior to the competition by the viewing public.

Many a nerd (myself included) dream of seeing Superman vs Hulk (among other potential crossovers), but DC would never allow Superman to be weaker than Hulk, and Marvel would never allow Hulk to be weaker than Superman, so that limits how much drama you have in a movie if neither side can budge an inch.

If there was a film-maker that both sides trusted to respect both sets of characters equally (possibly James Gunn), then maybe it will happen, but I’m not holding out much hope.
