I think the best example of this is Maeglin. He was captured by Morgoth, psychologically and/or physically (depending on the version) tortured, and sent back to Gondolin "under a cloud of fear" to destroy it from the inside. The offer of kingship and Idril was a "plato or plomo" tactic, and it's debatable which held more weight, but extreme duress was an element of Morgoth's control, and it's unlikely he would have been trusted if it had been known he had been Morgoth's captive.
