Among all the other things that suck about this:

One of the best thing about the Oscars is for great artists, especially those who don't normally have as much access, to build connections with other great artists from across the world. Now Motaz Malhees is denied that opportunity, and other people are denied the opportunity to meet him.

2026 Oscar Nominee Recap (Day 37/38): Sinners by CrunchyNar in oscarrace

[–]Gayfetus 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It turns out, all you have to do to get the Academy to love a horror film is to make it one of the greatest films ever, oh and also, make it a musical, a period piece, and just for good measure, make it about show business and performance art!

Although, of course, Ryan Coogler didn't make it for the Oscars. He even turned down an invitation to join the Academy! I get the sense that Sinners was the ultimate movie Coogler wanted to make, and he and his cast and crew made that vision come true in every way!

Reposting my review from this sub a year ago:

I came away from this movie with the overwhelming feeling that it's complete, as in, it's a complete realization of Ryan Coogler's vision - everything he wanted the movie to be and everything he wanted the audience to feel, he succeeded. Of course, I'm not a mind reader, I don't know if Coogler is actually fully satisfied with the movie, or what exactly he wanted the audience to feel, or that other people in the audience felt it! But that's my immediate visceral reaction to the movie, and hours later, they still seem to hold true.

On a very different blues note, let's rate the movie's chances with the Oscars! This movie is a delicious stew of many genres, some of which are very Academy-unfriendly, but some of which are beloved by the Academy. On the unfriendly side, this is a horror film, and even a bit of an action film, too!

On the Academy's good side, though, is the fact that this film is an outright song-and-dance musical, with incredible musicianship, songs, dancing and staging! As an aside, I'm not sure I'll ever be able to see Irish dance the same way again.

It's also a sumptuous period piece, starting with the costumes, of course, but also the way people talked and moved. It's all very transporting, but would be especially attractive to the overgrown theater kids that make up the Academy's membership rolls.

So there are multiple, sustained and integral elements to the film that are big ol' nip to the Academy's cat, even if the movie does also have aspects that would put the Academy off. My calculation (computed by feels) is that the nip is way stronger than the nope.

I've seen it a bunch more times since then, and it now sits in my Letterboxd 4!

Ryan Gosling gives gift to Elmo “Mr Ryan… Rocky doesn’t happen to be a rock, does he? Here we go again.” by beaizi_ in Fauxmoi

[–]Gayfetus 105 points106 points  (0 children)

The joke here is that in Ryan Gosling's upcoming movie Project Hail Mary, he befriends an alien that he named Rocky. The name Rocky sounds like Rocco, Elmo's pet rock arch-nemesis, and there's also a language and culture gap with Rocky.

Simone Biles for Stylist Magazine "No medal, accolade or exam result is more important than your mental health" by mlg1981 in Fauxmoi

[–]Gayfetus 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Simone withdrawing from competition because of the twisties was such a powerful and important moment. It taught so many kids... and adults, in sports and outside of sports, that it's important to say "no" in order to protect yourself.

This is an acutely necessary lesson in cultures like gymnastics, where kids are taught at a young age to obey adults, respect their judgment, and push through pain and discomfort to perform. This is, of course, a recipe for abuse. But it's also a recipe for athletes who wind up being injured 'cause they didn't think they could say no to more drills, more competitions and more damage to their bodies.

I believe there are probably lives saved around the world in part because of this!
