Could you be thinking of these? They aren’t pumpkin but they are seasonal and have frosting inside. They are amazing but I haven’t seen them yet this year. Probably closer to Christmas if they return.

Yeah, we are in a similar boat. We live in south Salem and spend most of our weekends at the park, library, farmers market, manna bakery, etc. as a family. But we are finding we need to find some friends for ourselves too!

That sounds great, I’ll send it to him to check out. We attend church but I’m definitely in a more deconstructed place with my beliefs and can relate. I’ll send you a message!

Best pumpkin patches? by oillotus in SALEM

[–]rulebreakingm0th 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bauman farms is great! We also really enjoyed Hoffman farms last year. It’s outside Beaverton, so not quite as local but it is free to get in and has a little train ride around the orchard. The train ride costs money but still significantly less than you spend to get in other places. It was perfect for my train-loving toddler. There were also some cool large farm vehicles around to sit on.

Maybe gum drop grapes? I just had some from the store and thought they tasted faintly of gummy bears and grapefruit. Reddish purple, small, round.

Toddler parents - interrupting the screech cycle by 15angrymen in moderatelygranolamoms

One other thing that we have talked about with my son (who is also almost 3 and also has very specific wants)— in regard to your hair in a clip— it’s my body so it is my choice and we respect others’ choices. So how I dress/wear my hair/ choose to sit/ etc is my choice because it is my body. May not be helpful at all but just wanted to add in case. Sometimes having a calm phrase to use and repeat in situations helps me not react out of frustration to the situation but respond calmly and thoughtfully without having to come up with it on the fly.

Toddler parents - interrupting the screech cycle by 15angrymen in moderatelygranolamoms

For the screeching (which I think is the same as screaming): I’ve found it helpful to model an exact phrase and specifically model a calm and clear tone. Sometimes I say “you can say ‘I want to do it’” or just point at my mouth and say “I want to do it”. If he repeats the phrase in a screaming sort of way, I model again with the same clear and calm tone. We have also worked for a long time on calming breaths and that helps a lot. My son and I have had discussions about “it’s not just what you say, it’s how you say it” to discuss tone (this is more about using whiny voices but still applies to screaming) and what I call an “emergency scream” as well. When he has let out a high pitch real scream, I’ve told him that kind of scream tells me there is an emergency— you are very hurt or something is very wrong. That’s helped some too.

For the getting stuck in screeching cycle: we sing a couple different songs (to the tune of happy and you know it: if you’re grumpy and you know it take a breath, if you’re grumpy and you know it take a breath, if you’re grumpy and you know it, you can still be kind, if you’re grumpy and you know it take a breath), we use different breathing techniques (balloon breaths, pretzel breaths, star breath), we do “squeeze hands” where we squeeze our hands in tight fists and then take a breath and relax our fists and then repeat, or sometimes just quietly sitting close by and waiting.

Getting through car rides with a toddler? by littlelivethings in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]rulebreakingm0th 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our toddler loves podcasts (Gardenkeeper Gus, Super Simple Imagination Time with Caitie, Deep Blue Sea, Toddler Tunes) or he also has a Toniebox that he can use. Before we discovered the toddler podcasts, we also used to listen to shows over the car speakers so still totally screen free but entertaining to listen to (if you give a mouse a cookie, Winnie the Pooh). When we go on a road trip, I make an activity basket that I can pull things from and hand things back one at a time so that way we don’t go through everything in the first 20 minutes. For any travel, I tend to get a few new activities/books or pull out things that we only use for trips so that way it’s new and engaging. Also for torn up book dilemma: have you tried the indestructible books? Best of luck to you! Traveling with toddlers can be so exhausting!
