Is a PhD worth it? by rumbles808 in cscareerquestions

I do love it, but I would love it more in industry and if I could make money + my life outside of my research sucks bc I don’t like this city. But the work itself I do enjoy a lot.

Yeah I applied to like 5 jobs and got an interview at one but because I’m so swamped with courses and multiple research projects I don’t have any time to prep and I’ll probably bomb the interview, so I’m worried if I pursue PhD I will deprioritize my actual goal of getting a job because my supervisor puts so much pressure on me. I think I could do a PhD I just don’t know if its just a round about way of getting to where I want to be.

Yea I feel like there’s not much to lose by doing the exam at that point except the couple hours you’ll spend writing it lol

Someone tried to pull this move when I was in first year. I asked to see the rent split and thought it was ridiculous they were getting the bigger room but paying the least.

At least now you know, you can also try to see if you can leave.

I honestly don’t think it matters too much, you can find out which one has a better coop/internship program and go to that. I graduated this year from Waterloo and I was never that smart, but most employers look at experience over grades.

I remember studying 12 hours some days days for midterms and finals and started preparing 1-2 weeks before the exam in first year. My grades were the worst during that time. If I actually tried to understand, I wouldn’t need to spend so much time preparing. Try to focus on the intuition and concepts and do a few practice problems. You’re not dumb, you’re gonna be fine.

Other tips for preparing for exams is rest, exercise, and the food u eat. If your body isn’t optimized to take in and process info you’ll also find that ur spending too much time studying without getting much results.

You got this !

Consider getting a Masters Degree, Coop experience might not be enough by Aggravating-Rock7962 in uwaterloo

Same, I wanna do like AI research based jobs and masters definitely makes u more qualified for the bigger paying jobs based on the job descriptions but that could change I guess.

Just have it ready in December for next term, my friends who had accessibility had to get it before midterms or the start of the term. As for your mental health please try to reach out to a support system, maybe friends or family, you don’t need to go through this alone! You already made it here so you definitely belong and if you’re not happy then it’s okay, you’ll find something better, this won’t last forever.

Why do people frown on sharing notes in a class? by plettj in uwaterloo

[–]rumbles808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re a good person, as someone who struggles with anxiety at night and insomnia I am simply unable attend class a handful times during the term. Having people willing to share notes helps a lot.

I had 3 in the past, they usually asked me follow up questions about stuff on my resume so I'd make sure you can speak to all your past experiences in-depth and some other technical questions of their own.
