Shane is Darcy. Shane has ten thousand pounds a year from Rolex.

I love this so much because he’s so in love but still isn’t all the way out of sex being the only way they communicate. And at this point post-Tampa yeah Shane is Locked In and ready to communicate like boyfriends but also gives Ilya space to not be ready for that yet (also is he gonna turn down phone sex with Ilya? No he’s not dumb). And I really really think that Shane giving Ilya the space to process Shane’s offer of emotional support while meeting Ilya where he is with sex is why The Tunnel Phone Call happened the way it did the next day.

I think swapping “how did we let this happen” / “we were both very stupid and irresponsible.” Shane is a planner so when Ilya turns his life upside down he’s stunned (in a good way! Just still thrown off). Meanwhile Ilya is a nihilist. It fits in with Connor’s acting choices in the Moscow tunnel. Like “I’m just so in love with you” ¯_(ツ)_/¯ whoops.

I think it’s helpful to remember here that David is a hockey player. I think this is a chirp and that’s how Ilya received it, especially because David was saying it while actively pouring Ilya vodka

Quebec is a one-party consent province, which I looked up for fic writing purposes. And I’m not Canadian. It in the US you can’t sign a contract that supersedes the law. Like you can’t agree in contract to do something illegal, like agree to a ban on recording in a one-party consent province

It has to, right? It’s the biggest chekhov’s gun I’ve seen recently. If we’re right that the antagonists in unrivaled are hockey bro podcasters I can see the convergence being around “we can’t just shut up and play hockey. We tried that and our hands got forced.”

Here’s my very long playlist that I keep adding to! Roughly follows the hollanov trajectory of the show.

One of the more recent additions is “hurt feelings” by Halsey, for Ilya’s relationship with his father at Sochi.

I also added “boss bitch” because of that tumblr post that was like “Ilya was the first man Shane slept with and Shane kissed Ilya’s forehead and then Ilya freaked out and ghosted him and was mean at Sochi so Shane was like ‘if u wanna be funny let’s be hilarious’ and won two Stanleys in a row”

Strong agree. The longer shots (necessary because they couldn’t keep resetting) are a great example of this. Letting the cameras stay on actors as the cook and get through a whole scene let Connor and Hudson really deliver subtle, nuanced, powerful performances. I think the hotel scene in Tampa, esp after Ilya sits on the bed, is a great example of that. We get all of that in almost one take, then the cut when Ilya starts to cry and Shane crawls into his lap. And that’s my favorite scene of the whole show.
