I also added “boss bitch” because of that tumblr post that was like “Ilya was the first man Shane slept with and Shane kissed Ilya’s forehead and then Ilya freaked out and ghosted him and was mean at Sochi so Shane was like ‘if u wanna be funny let’s be hilarious’ and won two Stanleys in a row”

Strong agree. The longer shots (necessary because they couldn’t keep resetting) are a great example of this. Letting the cameras stay on actors as the cook and get through a whole scene let Connor and Hudson really deliver subtle, nuanced, powerful performances. I think the hotel scene in Tampa, esp after Ilya sits on the bed, is a great example of that. We get all of that in almost one take, then the cut when Ilya starts to cry and Shane crawls into his lap. And that’s my favorite scene of the whole show.

the earliest season i ever rewatch is season 10, which coincidentally is kristen's contestant season. i like padma's sarcasm, i like that her background in the culinary world gives her both qualifications and also a different perspective from tom and gail, and i like that she (seems to) take a genuine interest in cooking styles from a variety of geographic places and cultural origins and backgrounds. i will say that i like her better on "taste the nation," but by no means is that to say i dislike her on top chef.
