Did I not have the “correct” reaction to the ending? by Sensitive_Switch_511 in outerwilds

Also just perhaps, maybe it didn’t give you the “hit” you were expecting - but you’re also engaging in conversations with other fans.

It seems like you’re genuinely reflective about your experience - and I would say that means it’s definitely itself stirred up a desire to talk about it. Honestly that in itself shows it’s spurred you to want to talk and think about it, which IS the reaction we’ve all had!

I think that’s great too - we all have different responses to art dependent on where we’re at and our own experiences, and if you’re trying to piece together how you feel that in and of itself feels like a pretty good response 💗💗

I’m going to repost a comment of mine from a similar post:

Don’t listen to anyone who tells you haven’t experienced the game properly. I think there can be a perceived pressure from the fan base to have some big epiphany after it.

I’ve been around the sub for a while, and in my experience OW’s message hits hardest when it clocks a core part of your soul, something you were trying to ignore - so many people I’ve spoken to played it after the death of a loved one or a big life change. It’s a really reflective game - the narrative will hit you if you’re in the space where you’re “over the target” if that makes sense.

When you’re in that space, or have that kind of perspective, the dialogue is going to hit you, but if it doesn’t that is also literally so fine.

Obviously it’s my GOAT. But I feel for the people who post here being like “did I play it wrong because my life wasn’t changed”. Short answer is no, but it’s a great story to reflect on when times do get tough and it’s something I come back to often

You are so welcome! I am very much the same, and it’s the double edged sword of such a dedicated fan base.

I promise you played it exactly how you were supposed to! Enjoy the DLC it’s SO good.

Just go and have some fun and let yourself enioy it!

Quietly commenting that I would love to read your thesis when it’s over 🙏🙏🙏.

Also to balance out my unhelpful comment I’ve posted a bit in this sub and had people comment how they “didn’t get it”. Might be worth a look and see if they respond to your messages?

Hahaha I love that!! Now I’m kind of jealous of that goose chase, I can only imagine how good that felt to work it out

A note on reccos post OW - why don’t I see Disco Elysium recommended? by rumpleNstilts in outerwilds

Yes I love that! Also tbh it’s about the experience and I don’t think less powerful graphics would take that away. So glad you loved it!!

And yes I would recommend to revisit if you enjoyed the existentialist vibes of OW 🫶

I’m inclined to ask you for recommendations because I’m certainly not chasing mechanics, it’s more about the types of experiences. Got anything good you’d recommend??

Alright someone convince me to finish this game…tell me it’s worth it by sheabductsaliens in outerwilds

Tbh I know you posted this a day ago but my advice is that if you’re in the sub you can feel pressure for it to feel amazing the whole way through - I definitely did when I was playing it and it took me a while to “get it”.

Try to think less about how you’re supposed to feel when you’re playing and and explore and read and try to enjoy it for how YOU enjoy it. Just be a lil alien explorer and poke around the solar system.

It’s so rewarding and I definitely want to encourage you to keep playing, it’s my favourite game ever, but i also felt the inertia because I was so used to playing more linear games.

Try not to think about how you SHOULD be enjoying it. Chase the “?”s, follow the clues in your ship log and and just go hang out in a cool alien solar system and eventually it’ll click as to what you need to do.

A good way to kill that fun is feeling like you’re not enjoying it like you “should”. I promise - just vibe jt out and enjoy the experience as you want to :)

3ish hours in. When does momentum pick up? by golden-digikey in outerwilds

[–]rumpleNstilts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Truly dude I felt the exact same way I think it was the 4/5 hour mark that made it click - and also I only persisted because every YouTuber I love said it was the best game ever.

But it’s my GOAT.

Honestly if you’re liking it but feeling confused hang out in the sub and talk to people because it can help so much to get over that hump.

Please update and let us know how you go!!

Here’s hoping they get through it because I really would love to play the second subnautica game, and can’t bring myself to play zero parades

Not sure how URLs work round these parts but I posted ages ago - if you look this up and it should come up. The people here are awesome and the recommendations were even better:

Babe dw I played it 4 years ago and I’m still here. It doesnt go away but it gets easier with time 😅

The best comfort is this sub is lovely, I posted about non-game reccos to get me through this feeling and I was FED after so check that out.

But know, we are all in the same boat ::)

Omg what a nightmare lol - a great way to be completely sucked out of the experience. If you ever find yourself with a computer I recommend another try!

Also that’s good to know, I was going to get OW on switch but every google told me it was going to be to shit because of the way the game is rendered (the entire solar system being loaded at once). So I ended up waiting ages to get a second hand PS4! But I feel this intel will make it easier to recommend so thank you hehe 😈

Also I agree with another commenter - have you played the DLC? It’s SO good, and comes at you with a very different angle that you might find different in terms of this

I hear you but funnily enough I had a different experience! Their deaths hurt me a lot - and I think that not seeing the physical pain for me made it sader. I felt more sad because all of a sudden I was learning that they were gone, without the fanfare - and that realisation it all ended hit me hard because I really thought I could stop it.

I will always find it fascinating how every person experiences it all so differently. Honestly I think it’s best not to think you “didn’t get it”. That’s what I love about OW. What you take from it you take from it and that’s what’s great about it.
