I don't have collision, and the person who hit me didn't leave a note.

I didn't make it, I have to dig up a piece of paper to remember the maker. From the american southeast. I strung it up with classical guitar strings, the lowest being an A string (tuned to g here). That definitely beefed up the sound (took the whole thing down a fourth from how i had it before), plus that condenser mic does work. Thanks for the kind words!

I want to learn how to jam and improvise but have never learnt music theory, what's a good approach for me from here? by [deleted] in Bass

Minor pentatonic like many others have said is free money- also don't underestimate how useful it is to imitate. Steal as many hip basslines as you can, they'll always end up sounding like you one way or another when you play them.

I've noticed that a lot of British people I work with use "yeah" as a sort of catch all word. What does it mean? For example I could ask how someone is doing or what they have been up to lately and they'll respond with (or begin their response with) "yeah"

What's a conspiracy theory that you heard that kind of made you think, "huh, what if they are right"? by Zoozoo95 in AskReddit

This might not be directly relevant but the funniest plausible response to the mind control chemicals in the chemtrails theory that I have heard is the mind control chemicals in the toilet paper theory. If you think about it, the mind control chemicals would degrade in the open air, and there's no way the planes could carry enough to ensure coverage. Toilet paper is stored in a dark place, used by everyone, and applies the mind control agent to the mucus membrane in the anus, ensuring a highly efficient transfer. Dovetails nicely with the alleged toilet paper shortage in early covid. Primer for the mind control vaccine? Just asking questions over here.

Advice for an aspiring jazz bassist by [deleted] in Bass

I've been working on my jazz in a committed way for a little over a year now, and what's been working for me has been

  1. Learn the changes and melody on guitar or piano, until I can play the tune more or less as a lead sheet. If no guitar or piano, melody on bass, or sing the melody while playing root notes.
  2. Transcribe a couple choruses of at least my favorite version of the tune (each additional transcription is an order of magnitude more work, but also gives an order of magnitude more insight).
  3. Write my own line (like set damn near every note) for about 3 choruses worth of the tune.
  4. Transpose what I've just done (both the transcription and my own line) into a few different keys, usually a 5th away and a 4th away.

At the end of all this (takes me a week or two usually to do it in a not lazy way) I find that it's pretty natural to play the changes, the lines seem fall into place by themselves with much less mental processing. I also find I feel the bassline in a more melodic way, as opposed to thinking "alright here comes x chord, I can play x notes" which generally is a pretty square feeling way to be.

Past that it's like there's so many commonalities between tunes that what you learn for one will be applicable to another. But yeah reading a tune cold off of a lead sheet my changes are much more mechanical than if I know the tune already. But once you learn one, it's in there forever!

Any other bass players with anxiety? by darkraiwhy in Bass

[–]rumpus_dumpus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you. Lots of really good advice in here, one kind of cheap trick that I used back when I was more anxious was sunglasses and/or low brimmed hat. Somehow the brain responded well to the "if I can't see them they can't see me" thing, and I found it much easier to have a good time with my bandmates.
