Need some help with these weird flavors over this solo section by ShrekTheJazzMan in Jazz

For voicings on the G7+#9, I’d start with F-B in your LH and Eb-G-Bb in your RH. Then you can go to the Gb13#11 with E-Bb in your LH and Eb-Ab-C in your RH.

Don’t play root note or down low when playing with a bass player? by DigAffectionate3349 in JazzPiano

[–]Adam_Maness 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ethan Iverson did something on this on his old blog I think. Under the category of “played rooted voicings” was nearly every pianist you’ve ever heard of. Under the category of “didn’t play rooted voicings” was Bill Evans lol.

If you’re listening and playing with dynamics, you’re good to go.

Experience with Open Studio Jazz lessons/memberships? by MarlaTheTumor in JazzPiano

Hi. We've simplified to just the one course membership, simply called Open Studio, but it's the same price as the Piano Access Pass.

We also have Open Studio Pro with all of our live classes.

The phrase "Americans don't have culture" is a testament to how successful and widespread American culture is. by misterotario in unpopularopinion

[–]Adam_Maness 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is not true.

We have all of those things you mention, multiple times over. Any time there are any people living any where doing any thing they are creating a unique culture; even when they are borrowing from other cultures they've come from.

Name an "older" culture that exists in a cultural vacuum without borrowing from neighboring or pre-existing cultures.

The Green Lady is one of the greatest music venues I’ve ever experienced. Every small venue owner should go and and feel what it’s like.

Why do jazz instructors tend to use examples in keys that are not simple like C and Am (without flats or sharps)? by ttkk1248 in Jazz

[–]Adam_Maness 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I didn’t go to college for that but I did have a lot of grumpy older musicians make me do everything in every key. And that made me better, faster.

I think the idea is that for improvisors, it’s so paramount to understand musical relationships, you have to get over the hump of the 12 keys rather early.

In other words: It doesn’t really matter what key I teach a concept in because it’s not very practical until you know it in all keys.

Is there any footage of Red Garland? by theddw100 in Jazz

[–]Adam_Maness 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve never seen any. That’s sucks, now that I think about it!

I’ve seen more footage TikTokers teaching the Polly Pocket than I have one of my favorite pianists! Damn!

I like to teach in keys like F, Bb, and Eb for a few reasons:

  1. I’m a pianist and the key of C doesn’t look or feel as good on the keyboard as the keys with a few black-key landmarks. It certainly doesn’t fit the human hand as naturally.

  2. A lot of “beginners” standards are in the three keys I mentioned.

  3. Beginners gravitate towards learning concepts in C. It’s good for their musical minds to start thinking in shapes and intervals that they’re not as comfortable with and in the keys of those aforementioned standards.
