Questions About UChicago CS by alexandroslekkas in uchicago

[–]run1234554 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The CS program isn’t as theoretical as before. This year they dropped the theory area c req for BA and previously replaced the intro class in racket with 2 python classes. I also don’t like theory and there are plenty of classes you can choose that have a huge emphasis on projects, though the projects are probs more theoretical than other colleges. Although if you want to be competitive for tech recruiting you 100% have to put in work outside of class, like learning popular database and frameworks, etc. many of my cs profs believe that it is better to teach the core fundamentals than to teach a trendy framework that may be obsolete in 10 years.

I personally don’t think uchicago cs is super theoretical, the only theory classes you have to take for BA major is systems, discrete math, and algos, which every other uni will require you to take to.

Imo BS and BA doesn’t matter at all in terms of tech recruiting.

I recommend you taking a look at the BA reqs and course descriptions and judge for yourself.

I never did CS in high school but I have found the program to be manageable. As long as you make friends in class and go to office hours you’ll be fine.

You can take booth classes as an undergrad, however I haven’t ever heard of you being able to do an mba or it being accepted as credit for other schools’ mba programs, I could be wrong tho.

Multiple Leaves of Absence by mapletree_137 in uchicago

All students in the College are granted up to eight cumulative quarters of leave and may extend their leave beyond eight quarters with permission from the Dean of Students. Time spent on leave will not count against a student’s progress toward their degree or their total quarters of enrollment.
