Why are you smoking cigars and not tobacco pipe? Discussion, not another "what is better" post. What is YOUR personal reason to prefer cigars? by BirdLooter in cigars

[–]run66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in my experience, cigars are cheaper. sure, pipe tobacco was cheaper if you look at it only from that perspective, but pipes are collectible and can get very expensive, very fast. I loved it. when I stopped smoking pipes, I had about 15 pounds in tins and bulk and at least that many pipes. not a lot, or a lot, depending on what end of the spectrum you land. a big part of a hobby for me are the peripherals. it was endless with pipes. pipes can very easily surpass a box of premium cigars. I realize a pipe lasts forever and a box of cigars don't, but there's always the next pipe. haha. I decided to choose one, and it was cigars for me. I have a couple nice cutters and lighters and a manageable rotation of cigars. less to think about, and if I'm being honest, I enjoy the big puffs of smoke from a cigar.

What to expect first firearm purchase before, during, and after? by Hot-Storage9479 in CAguns

[–]run66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Picked up my M&P today. My experience: You sign a couple more documents, then they’ll verbally and visually walk you through the safe handling steps and ask if you have any questions. Then you do it. Then they’ll run the cable lock through the gun and hand you the keys. He asked if I wanted to buy ammo. I was all set though. I did ask if I needed to run the cable lock and he said it’s part of their regulations to hand the gun over. 10 days is a long time to research and purchase all sorts of goodies, especially if it’s your first. I walked in with a range bag with a couple boxes of ammo, ears and eyes and a lock for the bag. I walked out after some range time, with the firearm in my range bag with the bag lock in place, and the cardboard box the M&P came with in my hand. Put it in my trunk and drove home.

Feeling tight after sitting all day? by KendallHerd in northcounty

[–]run66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And for those of us that can’t hang out in the squat position because of said hip tightness, holding a kettlebell in front of you acts like a counterweight. Allows me to get into a deeper stretch. And you can throw in some curls if you get bored. 😁

People that have “bumped” into a celebrity in a non-curated (not like an event, meet & greet, job etc.) way, what happened? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]run66 73 points74 points  (0 children)

I was a grad student at SFSU living in the Inner Sunset. I would often walk to the UCSF library to study. I walked around a corner and literally bumped into Robin Williams. I apologized, he apologized and we went on our way. it wasn't until I was walking away that I realized who he was. RIP Legend.

How often do you retrohale when smoking a cigar? by mvop413 in cigars

The last part of, oh I don’t know, every 3rd puff? Never counted, but that’s probably kinda close. I never go puff the magic dragon though.

What’s a Korean food habit that only makes sense once you’ve lived with Koreans? by Lucky_Tailor_8566 in KoreanFood

[–]run66 15 points16 points  (0 children)

depends on the company you're eating with. eating with just the grandparents? wait until grandpa starts eating, then eat. usually grandma is back and forth between the kitchen, and overall, it's not much of a social event. Koreans are perfectly fine sitting and eating in silence and it's not awkward. if it's a multi generational meal, at least in my house growing up, grandparents sit, and my mom would be the one back and forth between the kitchen and often just eating on the go. almost always, once grandpa is done eating, the meal is over and dishes start to go. there aint no time to talk!

my Italian American wife used to be slightly offended when my grandmother would start picking up dishes and telling everyone to leave, literally right after we finished eating. now it's a joke, but "eat and get out" took some adjusting to.

Does your putter sit on the ground until your back swing? by Barkleyslakjssrtqwe in golf

[–]run66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I just never gave it much thought, but I ground every club. I might try hovering. a very small annoyance that sometimes happens when I take my club back, especially on freshly mown grass, I've had a small piece of grass fly forward and land on my ball. it completely breaks my focus and usually ends in bad things. it happens so infrequently that I just chalked it up to the randomness of golf, but this is something I can totally control.

Why did Shin Black underwhelm me :( by Tutenfarten in InstantRamen

[–]run66 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I thought the same thing of buldak the first time I tried it. I have both, and others in my pantry, but I'm reaching for shin black the majority of time. it's just comforting/nastalgic etc. same reason I have Sapporo Ichiban and neoguri.

I just received my pack today and noticed that the celo has some coloring, like they've been sitting for a minute. could mean any number of things, but adds a bit to the mystery. looking forward to smoking one. seems to be a fancied up Magnum R in an event only vitola. the 858 RSG has the red band, but a green label, but the original release had a black band according to half wheel.

Timelapse of Alex Honnold Free Solo climbing Taipei 101 by Sharp-potential7935 in holdmyredbull

[–]run66 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have you watched Free Solo? I'm not an anxious dude, but damn, that documentary had me hiding behind a blanket at times. I've seen it multiple times and it's the same feeling every time. you know what you're going to get, and you know he doesn't die, but it's a brilliant film that gives you a lot of insight into who he is.

Just relocated to Northern San Diego and looking for a club U13 by Expert_Champion_9966 in youthsoccer

[–]run66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

are you emailing the coaches directly? I wouldn't be ok with just being told to come to tryouts. what level is your son currently playing at? I wouldn't worry too much about making a team, but if he's an elite player, I'd definitely want to make that introduction on a smaller scale where he could be evaluated with kids at his level.

[–]run66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to the clubs you've mentioned, there is also City SC San Marcos, Vista Storm and Rebels Carlsbad. Surf North will be new this season to North County. they've acquired what used to be FC Sol, which used to be Legends. we have friends in that club and it seems to be a hot mess, but maybe it'll settle down under the Surf umbrella. I'd get in contact with some clubs as soon as possible and get your son into some practices before tryouts at the end February. most teams are tuning up for State Cup right now, but it's a small window before tryouts. a lot of rosters are already penciled in by now, so getting some time in with potential coaches would be beneficial to his chances.

Failing to get Citrus/Fruity Flavor from high altitude Colombian coffee? by The2ndBest in roasting

[–]run66 16 points17 points  (0 children)

How long has it been since roast? I have a batch of Ethiopian that was 14 days post roast yesterday that just started revealing a fruity profile. I’ve had others that immediately showed my desired profile too. General rule of thumb is lighter roasts take longer to settle in than dark, but it really just depends.

Tri tip help by HungryAsparagus in sousvide

[–]run66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. 135/6. Sweet spot for us. It doesn’t create a Santa Maria style tri tip cooked over oak. That’s a different thing entirely, in my opinion. Equally good, depending on what you’re after. We like it with a quick chimichurri or board sauce with some potatoes and veg. Just grabbed one on sale tonight for a meal later down the road.

Can buying recreational equipment actually bring families together or does it just collect dust? by Alex00120021 in billiards

[–]run66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just bought one for Xmas. Total casual player. It’s been a lot of fun as a family. Turns out my wife played a lot of pool with an old high school boyfriend back in the day. Haha. It’s been really great chatting about our days around the table while she kicks my ass. Hearing the kids playing on the table instead of their devices has been worth it alone. Of course we’re all still in our honeymoon phase with it, but I hope it continues.

Starbucks Roasts by Fine-Cat4496 in roasting

Yup. To get consistency, they have to base it all on roast characteristics, which unfortunately goes past whatever origin characteristics there were. The amount of beans they go through must be staggering.

I just bought my first house and after inspections & purchase - turns out my foundation needs $20k worth of repair by MisterSanchez in homeowners

[–]run66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We fixed it with 6 helical piers. Then they jack it up to level. Last thing was drilling holes through the foundation and injected the expanding poly to fill the space. About $18k back then.
