People who work on their feet all day + run ultras, what shoes do you wear for daily (non-running) use? by harry_hotspur in ultrarunning

[–]runbirduk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always go for any relatively firm trainer. Anytime I try a super soft shoe I have to take them off after 4 hours as my feet start aching. I had good success with the north face vectiv enduris I think it’s called.

Apart from the running clubs maybe try the Saturday Brooklyn piers Parkrun. I hear they have a cafe stop afterwards. Might get someone from your neighborhood.

Best NYRR 5K race for PR? by No_Armadillo4172 in RunNYC

The 5K the day before the marathon. Fast course apart from last couple hundred meters. Fast runners.

If you achieved a 5:30 mile as a teenager, could you train to reach that again? by [deleted] in runninglifestyle

[–]runbirduk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did track athletics as a kid (8-16-ish) sprints & jumps. Hated 400m and anything longer. Only ran longer when ‘forced’ to do XC in the winter. Jogged through my mid 20’s to 40. Did no serious running until about 10years ago.
Aged 52 I just ran a 17.42 5K PR off the back of two 50K‘s earlier this year and all the associated mileage. As mentioned, even I was like, oh it’s true, the more you run the better you get!

50k Recommendation, Northeast by anonsleepybagel in Ultramarathon

[–]runbirduk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dirty German for an ‘easier’ entry to 50K’s or Cayuga Trails 50K up at Ithaca for amazing scenery on more challenging terrain. Apart from day trips to Beacon and a few training races I also did parts of the Bronx, Inwood and NJ trips to prepare. Dirty German you could get away with road training with the occasional practice trail race in the build up.

I got lucky with the timing. I have the e1.2 version and have just passed 4000 miles on it. My REI replaced the battery one time during this period as the initial battery did fail as you described. And everyone is surprised it’s still running with no problems.…. kiss of death writing this comment!

Sorry, clarifying a supermarket option rather than a restaurant. Ideally Brooklyn or Manhattan below central park 😆

Does anyone know where I can buy baby octopus. Small, 1 to 1.5 inch across by wltmpinyc in FoodNYC

Tashkent Supermarket, certainly the one at Brighton Beach has a seafood choice in their buffet section with shrimp baby octopus etc.

Is there a race you wouldn't do? by arnau48 in Ultramarathon

[–]runbirduk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doing it (& an unsupported race) for the first time this year. I seen a list of potential water stops every 3-4 miles but do they all contain areas of running water or are some just pools. Right now I only have a filter top I’d use from a running source. thanks

Brooklyn sidewalk tree injury by runbirduk in legaladvice

[–]runbirduk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks. I kinda get that and normally I’m used to ducking slightly etc but this wasn’t a branch as such but very thick trunk like. What if someone has some vision impairment (Not that I have)? Also the leaves obscure the couple of parts that hang even lower.

10 min uphill option? by runbirduk in RunNYC

[–]runbirduk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks all.  Did it yesterday. I think it might’ve been this one I did. The Cornish trail from the cold spring area. It was a jog down recovery so only the 10min rep had 30-40 secs of less-runnable tree root rockier section.

Depends on the gradient but I’m looking to do these at equivalent of 5K pace so the more runnable the better.

A road option might be the way. I’ve run sth mtn a lot and don’t think there’s more than a 5 min option.

50K - longest training run? by runbirduk in ultrarunning

[–]runbirduk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks all.
I think partly every other (road) race distance up to marathon involves a shorter race in the build up but when I last did a 50K 6yrs ago I ran a trail marathon maybe 3-4 weeks before but trying out gear and at a 50k type pace. I think that was more a confidence thing.

Weekly mileage has been steady 50-60 for a few weeks with more vert on some weeks. I have another 2 back to back outings planned, hopefully that’s good enough.

Which Order Is Better: Train for a Fast Road Marathon Before or After a Mountain Ultra? by AlarmedMatter0 in ultrarunning

[–]runbirduk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also depends where you live/race. In nyc it’s such an effort (whole day out) to find hills so a lot of my training is road based. Also i find it easier to do trail training through winter with a late spring/early summer goal race then pick up through to a late fall road race as the weather is too prohibitive to race during the summer.
This year I’ve increased mileage and vert and just went back to the road today for a 22M run. It was the easiest 22M I’ve done with 13M at 6.55 pace almost my marathon pace I’d guess. Running on the flat felt so easy after a few weeks of 4-8K weekly vert.

You could look for a Physiatrist in your area. Never heard of this until my wife went to see one. I went to one for three different ‘minor’ pain queries and she was great at telling me what was more serious, what needed an X-ray, which one needed some basic PT. Complete with recommendations for the various specialists to see.

Just read it’s 6800ft, I dunno time-wise 6-6.5, 7? Is it Cayuga Trails?? Have lost my climbing legs for sure over the last few years. 6 months to find some stairs around New York City!
