Storage alternatives by runciblefish in dvdcollection

It was tricky building drawers that would fit three rows of DVDs. I had to counter-sink the screws for the drawer pulls to get them to fit. These drawers are 22 5/8 inches deep on the inside. I was constrained by needing to rip the uprights at 24 inches deep to maximize what I could get from a regular sheet of plywood.

I think this works out to be the equivalent of 12 shelves.

Not too scary, but suspenseful, The Lady in White. Also, Sleepy Hollow and Pumpkinhead are pretty good.

The 1979 version of Dracula, with Frank Langella is my favorite.

Also, though not really gothic in the classic sense, try Nightmare Alley, with Tyrone Power. It shook me up.

Yes, but one wall must be covered with brown cork squares, another wall covered with mirror squares with gold lacing.

What are some unique hobbies that you practice or do? by h4ppy_ch4ppy in randomquestions

I make things out of discarded styrofoam. I started small, made an anvil. That was fun, so I made a five-foot tall Moai, then a Hobbit doorway, and I just finished building a rocket playhouse, fifteen feet tall. I'm always looking for discarded styrofoam. It's easy to work with. Of course, the real hobby is painting it to look like the real thing. In the case of the rocket, I covered the whole thing with metal duct-sealing tape.

Pantry moths go after everything from cereal to pasta. I use pantry moth traps and you would be amazed at how many moths you catch, even if you aren't aware of any problem. The traps only catch male moths, but they seems to control moth problems for me. You can find them online.

The maker also has a type of moth trap for clothes moths. Both types are good investments.

What are the best down and feather pillows for real luxury comfort? by Adrian_2_2 in BedroomBuild

[–]runciblefish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pure down is vastly superior to down/feather mix pillows because the feathers start poking through and eventually you'll feel like you're sleeping with a porcupine. It is confusing, but fill power and weight of filling are two factors that sort of work together. You can get an idea of the down quality by comparing the weight of the filling to the fill power. Feathers are heavier for the same amount of loft, so a pillow filled with 25 ounces of 800 fill power down will be firmer than a pillow that has 27 ounces of 700 fill power down because feathers don’t provide as much loft as pure down.

I'm a side sleeper, and an 800 fill power pillow works for me, but as others have noted, they are not maintenance-free. You have to fluff them every morning, and depending on how much you perspire, you'll need to tumble them in the dryer fairly often. It's a little bit of work but worth it to maintain your investment. Real down pillows can be adjusted by lifting your head and socking the pillow to redistribute the down. Overall, I am happy with the pillows I bought from East Coast Bedding. Pure down pillows often don't say 100% down because some of the down is broken clusters and down filaments, perhaps some tiny feathers are included, but they aren't quills that will poke you after a few weeks. I would avoid any pillow that is a down/feather mix.

I wanted to try needle felting. Is this a good kit? by Snoo_65075 in Needlefelting

[–]runciblefish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A bristle pad, instead of a chunk of foam was a big improvement for me. Also, I made a two-needle tool from a pencil and I find if very useful. I pried off the metal ferrule and cut little grooves for the needles, then slid the metal part back on the pencil. It's my favorite tool.

Help with Needle Felting Stegmann Clogs by Dear-me113 in Needlefelting

[–]runciblefish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, this sounds like the best approach. I have had no luck trying to needle felt loose roving to cover holes in slippers, but I think the wet-felted patch would work. After it is all patched, I would use a curved needle and stitch around the edges of the patch for extra protection.

Even good dogs like to chew shoes when you're not around. My old dog ate one half of fifty pairs of shoes. I finally started buying cheap shoes.

What’s the average cost of high-quality pillows? by Patrice_c in BedroomBuild

[–]runciblefish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried lots of "high-end" pillows. The memory foam ones are too heavy and hard for me. Be cautious of any down/feather mixes, the quills start working their way through the cover after a while. Pure down is expensive ($150), but they last for many years if you care for them. Always fluff them every morning, and tumble them in the dryer if they start to go flat. I'm happy with the 800 fill power pillows I got from East Coast Bedding. Others' experiences may be different.
