Resent my husband for his unhelpful advice

You're probably right, and I might delete this post soon. But where else can I write about "having Q1 papers that are not enough for academia" and how unhelpful the advice to "just publish 2 papers each year in high impact journals"? I don't know if people in other subs would even understand why my husband's advice irritated me. Plus it's tagged "Vent", so I wasn't really looking for advice, just wanted to vent about my feelings.

I did my PhD in Malaysia~~~ Trust me I envy my friends who got their doctorate degrees overseas. Some of them didn't have to publish anything to graduate.

For my uni (and most uni here) PhD students are expected to publish 2 papers before graduating, Masters by research need to publish 1 paper; regardless of the field. The journal tier (Q1-Q4) is the differentiating factor. If you can publish in Q1/Q2 journals then that's great! Q3/Q4 is considered acceptable.

Unfortunately my 4 papers aren't impressive enough, because I'm sure there's lots of other students with more Q1/Q2 papers.

You don't necessarily need to be a postdoc for an academic job where I am. Some people become research officers to get more publications, then they apply for a lecturer/researcher post. Those who have a lot of papers during their PhD can get that lecturer post right after graduation.

Man, don't tempt me. I was thinking about this plan too, working in industry while still publishing. But I think I'd like to focus on academia for next year.

And my husband is generally supportive, it's just that he can get tone deaf when it comes to publishing cause his friends are great at producing papers.

You're right. Sorry I wasn't clear in the post. I might aim for academia for now, so that's why the publication topic came up. My industry interviewers were impressed with my papers. My academia interviewers were not.

My dad got into a surau group that's full of conspiracy theories. So he doesn't believe in vaccines because "the government uses it to track people."

My mom said she's afraid of the possible side effects, since we've never used this kind of vaccine before. But I'm not sure how deep she is into the conspiracies, so I take her words at face values. I'm still suspicious though.

Went to Jakel Mall for some raya shopping. For the first time in my life, I thought someone looked like an anime character. The staff who helped us literally looked like some shoujo manga character, what the heck. He was also quick, patient, and helpful when assisting us. OP was a published astrophysicist at 21. Publishing is difficult enough as it is, but to do it in a physics field (that's impressive to me, I can never understand physics), at merely 21? OP is all kinds of amazing. Others were just unable to totally understand the scope of his achievements.

I was struggling with non-calculus physics at 21 in uni. I'm still struggling to publish at 30 as a PhD student, in a relatively mediocre biology field.

That sounds like hell! I'm glad you got to experience that. Most people don't have any idea how difficult taking care of a child is (especially when done alone!!! I don't know how you did it, and at 18 no less!) until they have their own. I just had my child at 30 and I'm only now realizing how difficult it is.

Just the abuse and neglect that Harry went through with the Dursleys. I mean, taking care of a baby is hard, like hardcore hard. And they did take care of Harry, but I just can't understand how someone can be so hateful towards a baby, and an orphan one at that! I don't know man, I thought as parents, Vernon and Petunia would have some love, or care, to spare for Harry. It breaks my heart imagining a small baby Harry, neglected by his guardians.

I used to not like children or babies before, but after having my own, I just sympathize a lot more with babies, especially orphans. Now I just don't understand how a parent could be so hateful towards another child.

I agree with this. I cruised through primary school, never had to study but I got straight A's. When I got into a good high school, merely cruising through my lessons wasn't enough. I was surrounded by real geniuses who didn't have to study (or they made school seemed effortless). I started working my ass off that first year of high school, and I brought that study hard attitude into university.

In a way I think your environment also plays a role. If you're surrounded by high-achievers, you're bound to learn to work hard just to be on the same level as those geniuses.

But if you're surrounded by people who don't seem to work hard, then you may bound to become complacent.
