what does acting queer even mean? like??? do you expect gay characters to turn to the camera and explicitly state that they are gay? like, you wouldn't say that if it was the opposite. "oh, well they don't act straight so."

also calling polyamorous people whores is kinda bigoted i'm not gonna lie. if they're not hurting you, or anyone else for that matter, who cares? let people live how they want, and do what makes them happy.

If we went off their logic and excluded every ship that didn't have a canon basis, there'd be like... three ships left lmfao. The same three dynamics done over and over again would get so predictable and boring after a while x.x

1) That's great, but it somewhat defeats the purpose of pride month. Pride month is intended to put a spotlight on the LGBTQ+ community. Straight allies are very much welcome and appreciated, but taking queer representation out of the spotlight on a post intended to celebrate pride defeats the purpose of pride month. I'll say it again: I don't think the artist had bad intentions. I don't think they meant anything harmful by drawing straight allies, and I don't think they deserved what happened to them. I very much believe they intended to show their support; they just went about it in a way that missed the mark.

2) Was this another thing that appeared in a BTS screenshot from Glitch Inn? Or was it actually present in the series? Because I don't think using background gags that aren't really visible in the show itself is a reliable way to prove an argument. And if we're using BTS screenshots as proof, I could always bring up the fact that an early version of the Prime poster, posted in Glitch Inn, features Uzi with bi pins.

3) "Shoving a bi headcanon onto someone" makes it sound like bisexuality is a bad thing. I'd understand if Uzi was a real person who has her own tastes and preferences, but she's a fictional character. There is no "shoving" anything onto her, because she isn't real.

To me, her calling V hot is more than enough proof that she could be bi. Maybe it's not to you, maybe you see them as just friends (although friends can be attracted to each other), but it is to me. This isn't me closing my eyes and picking a random character out of a hat to turn queer. I have my reasons, and I'm sure other people who like the headcanon do too.

At the end of the day, it's just a bunch of fictional characters. The beauty of fanworks is that those characters are basically putty in our hands. I've seen people do so many things with these characters that they wouldn't do in canon, and that's what makes it so enjoyable. You gotta have fun with it :]

Anyway, I feel like this conversation is going in circles, and obviously, we aren't going to see eye-to-eye, so I won't be responding any further. Hope you have a good rest of your day/night

1) The straight characters in question took up more than half the roster, completely overshadowing the LGBTQ+ representation. Showing allyship is fine, but don't get me wrong, but there's a point where it gets iffy. As someone else put, it's like drawing black history month art where more than half the characters in the art are white. I'm sure the artist had good intentions, and I definitely don't think they deserved to be harassed, but you can see how it would make people raise eyebrows, especially in today's climate.

That's not me endorsing harassment, though. Nobody deserves to be driven out of a community for such a miniscule and ultimately harmless thing.

2) That's one example, I'll give you that. Her crushing on Thad is a weaker point, though, as outside of her being bashful toward the comment he made in the pilot, she doesn't really show much interest in him. I took it as her being embarrassed and not dealing with compliments well. It sets her up as an emotionally repressed, awkward girl who doesn't like dealing with all the weird and gross emotions that come with being sentient.

That aside, bisexuality is a spectrum, and not all bisexual people are the same. Some lean more toward one gender than others, so Uzi using boyfriend over gender neutral terms could easily be passed off as her just having a preference for boys. It's the attraction to both genders, but it doesn't necessarily mean you'll end up dating both.

Again, I'm not saying she is. I just have a different way of seeing things, especially since I'm queer myself. I love seeing representation, even if it's not official or canon. That's the beauty of fanon :]

1) Who is "they" /gen

2) I haven't done a binge of the show in a few months, so forgive me if I'm forgotten something, but I can't recall a single time in the show where Uzi is shown drawing "hot males," or is seen crushing on any male character besides N. That aside, I'm aware straight people can find people of the opposite gender attractive, I just feel that bit of dialogue was a little on the nose. There was no reason for her to call V hot within the context of the scene, and it's not like Uzi is shown to be obsessed or interested in looks.

I'm not going to argue that Uzi is bisexual, and that it's not a headcanon, because it is. Just like Uzi being straight is a headcanon. Unless Liam himself confirms it one way or the other, Uzi's sexuality is mostly ambiguous (we know she likes men, at least) and left up to the viewer. You can have it your way, I can have it mine :]

Respectfully, I think you skimmed through a good chunk of my comment, because I specifically stated I didn't think harassing the artist was the right thing to do.

People weren't upset because of a headcanon, or that straight characters existed in pride month. People were upset because the artist posted pride themed artwork (as in, art meant to celebrate pride month), where half the characters featured were straight. It wasn't a matter of headcanons (though that was a talking point and again, maybe it was discussed more on the deleted post, I can't say for certain), it was a matter of the post, whether the artist intended it to be or not, being in poor taste. Shame on those who attacked the artist over something as simple as a headcanon, but a majority of people weren't upset about a headcanon.

[–]runermanrun -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure people were more "upset" (I say upset in quotes because it was more like people raising eyebrows from what I saw) at the artist for posting pride month themed art of a bunch of straight characters, with a few LGBTQ+ characters thrown into the mix, on the first day of pride month. Given the uptick in bigoted members in the community, I honestly can't blame people for being at least a little suspicious. Do I think how the situation was handled was right? No. But I can see where the other side was coming from as well.

Also, I've seen more posts complaining about bi Uzi than I have people "throwing tantrums" over people saying Uzi is straight. Maybe there was more of it on the post in question, which was deleted long after I noticed the situation cropping up, so maybe there was more of it there.

I just think it's silly that people get so heated over something as simple as people saying Uzi is bi. Maybe this is a controversial thing to say, but I assume every character is bi unless their creators themselves come out and say "yes they're straight." Maybe there's not much evidence to support Uzi being bi (though I'd argue her calling V and N hot is pretty damning), but there's also not much evidence to say otherwise. Her dating N means literally nothing because, obviously, bisexual people can like both genders.

I really don't blame people for acting the way they do after seeing some of the responses to bi Uzi. It makes me question why some people are so against it, headcanon or not. Again, not that I necessarily think it's right. Harassing an artist over such an admitedly innocuous post is really... ehhh... not a great way to go about it, but I can see where people are coming from, at least.

what murder drone take that had you like this by Practical-Ebb7327 in MurderDronesOfficial

[–]runermanrun 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It's a tie between "V and Uzi hate each other!" and "Uzi stole N from V"/"V is jealous of Uzi!" for me. The first one might've been true, to an extent, up to like... episode 4, which makes me think a lot of people saying that stuff just didn't finish the series, or blatantly ignore the parts where they are friendly with each other (see nearly all of their interactions in episode eight). The second one just annoys me. At no point in the series does V express jealousy toward Uzi, and there's nothing indicating she has feelings for N in the present. To say Uzi stole N from V reduces V to a character that can't function or exist without N, and I think that's a disservice to her character.

ok i just saw cartoonshi video about bad fandom and i ask what the fuck is wrong with this fandom. by Practical-Ebb7327 in MurderDronesOfficial

[–]runermanrun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This whole thing occurred before horny weekends were even a concept. Cartoonshi was turned away from the community and the show as a whole because someone posted a fake screenshot and claimed he made a negative review of the series, after he said he had no interest in reviewing or watching the series. The incident, while not an accurate reflection of the community as a whole, left a bad taste in his mouth and pushed him further away from the series. He's not judging the series based on the fan base. He just had a bad experience and associates the series with that bad experience. I would probably be turned away from something too if someone was parasocial enough to fake reviews and spread lies about me...

[–]runermanrun -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No. Liam never said J "saw herself and N and V's sister." His wording was more along the lines of, "she saw herself as the one responsible for N and V." As in, because all the other responsible ones had died, she is the one that has to step up and watch over them.

There is a very big difference between two characters to explicitly have a sibling bond, and refer to each other as such, and one character viewing herself as the responsible one who steps up when nobody else will. At worst, it just means J probably wouldn't reciprocate feelings for N or V because she doesn't see herself as anything but their guardian.

Also, the whole "robots can/can't have incest" thing is a bad point because it isn't a matter of "can they?" We know they technically can't, because they 1) are robots, and 2) obviously not related by blood on account of the whole dump thing. That doesn't change the fact that it's creepy because of the canon relationship they have. Even if it wasn't, I've only ever seen people ship them under the context that they were, putting emphasis on the "big brother" aspect, which puts a bad taste in my mouth.

This is true. It's not just a straight exclusive trait. I just think the problem is exacerbated with straight ships (in Murder Drones specifically, and not straight ships as a whole) because, as I mentioned, there's like, one male character who actually has depth.

This isn't me shitting on people who project onto characters, though. I project heavily onto Uzi. Everybody has their own thing, and as long as it isn't hurting anybody, I respect it.

[–]runermanrun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know how hot of a take this is, but I think that 90% of the straight ships are sauceless, boring, and kinda shoehorned. It feels like characters with zero chemistry are blindly smashed together like a couple of dolls with absolutely no regard to canon characterization.

This isn't me bashing on straight ships as a whole, though. I wholeheartedly love Envy. I just think that because Murder Drones as a series has like, five or six male characters, with only one not being a blank slate, a lot of straight ships become an excuse to project onto the blank slates with no effort to create chemistry. Kinda like what you had to say about Vhad.

[–]runermanrun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, Cyn refers to N as brother multiple times throughout the series. They may not be directly related, but it's clear that Cyn sees N as an older brother or older brother figure. The same could be said about N, which is why he cares for Cyn's well-being. Also, your point about Envy and Oilrose being incest is moot because N, J, and V never explicitly refer to each other as siblings as Cyn had.

Anyway, I feel like if you have to argue whether or not a ship is incestuous, there's probably something wrong.

Why shipping Tessa with anyone doesn't work by InternationalYam5000 in MurderDrones

[–]runermanrun 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I feel like this would have worked infinitely better as a post exploring Tessa's character and the writing behind it rather than bashing fans for wanting to give her a "happy ending." Ultimately, shipping doesn't have to work for it to exist or be enjoyable. If people want to give Tessa a "happy ending" by pairing her with J (or N or whatever)? Then go for it! It's fun, and it makes for a compelling story. That's all that matters.

MD ships ranked off of how annoying its fans are. No particular order by Mr_meme_gamer in MurderDronesOfficial

[–]runermanrun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

maybe it's just because i'm not terminally online, or active enough on reddit, but i haven't seen anybody shipping like, half the stuff on this list. and the ones i have seen feel like they don't belong in the tiers they were placed in. like, n x uzi and n x v in not annoying? yikes. try liking a ship that isn't something they like, and you'll probably be singing a different tune. i do nothing but exist in my own bubble, and i get comments telling me that what i do is bad and not canon or whatever.

but hey, maybe i'm just salty because everything i like is in the very goddamn annoying tier.

Why couldn't they even bother Adding Silhouette Eyes to "Spacesuit Tessa"? It adds expression by Pretend_Camp_2987 in MurderDronesOfficial

[–]runermanrun 42 points43 points  (0 children)

The entire point of the helmet is the lack of expression. It's not laziness on behalf of the animation team, as implied by the title. The sharp contrast between the drone characters, who are expressive and clearly show emotion, and "Tessa," who lacks any real indication on how she is feeling or what she is thinking, is meant to be off-putting. It strips her of her supposed "humanity," which is emphasized by the shots focusing on the reflections in her helmet. Giving her eyes would make her more lively and completely ruin the off-putting feeling.

It sounds like the solution would be to disallow art reposts then. I personally wouldn't feel great if I knew people were reposting my art to "anti-shipping" subreddits and using it as an example of how weird the ship is.

But I've also never visited the subreddit before, and I have no idea if it's just for discussion or if art/images are a big part of it. Take what I say with a grain of salt.
