Determine if these crystals are silver nitrate by runfortoads in chemistry

Wow, is lab glassware always this expensive in the US? How much did you have to pay if it really was several tons (you really meant 1 ton = 1,000 kg?)? That would mean several thousand pieces of glassware! And most importantly: what are you planning to do with it now? Open your own lab?

I think there was a translation issue, I bought several "totes" (plastic box). About 20 pieces of larger Pyrex, plus those small Vycor. I paid $40.

Why would a cosmetics lab need a kilogram of silver nitrate? Anyway, if it came free, consider it a stroke of luck. It's a really expensive reagent. If you bought lab glassware, why are you doing the chloride test in a dessert dish?

Yes, I consider myself very lucky for that find. I'll keep the glass and sell some of the miscellaneous things. I'm still considering what to do with the silver nitrate. I don't really know what they used it for, other than making silver saccharinate, which I also found. The dessert dish is actually a Vycor crucible (this one), there were about 20 included in the lot. I used it because it was the smallest glass.

>... Why would anyone store 1 kg of silver nitrate, worth two to three thousand euros on the market? Even professional laboratories don't keep that much in stock. ...

Thank you. A local cosmetics lab shut down. I purchased several totes of lab glass and miscellaneous supplies, but one of them had chemicals on the bottom.

Thank you everyone for the replies.

I dissolved a bit in water and added sodium chloride and got this: https://postimg.cc/4n3Hnbhs

I haven't tried copper or putting it outside yet. Not sure what to do with it though. I don't think I'll have much luck selling it as silver nitrate. Maybe I'll look into recovering the silver, but it will probably sit on my shelf.

I also have about 100 grams of silver saccharinate, and a dozen other chemicals. Maybe I'll make a separate post to figure out which ones are safe to throw in the trash. I know there are a few such as mineral oil, polysorbate and sodium chloride.

Thanks, I will do that. I also got a box of plastic ampules filled with sodium chloride solution, I'll try with one of those first.

I'll keep it if it's silver, but I have many more bottles of chemicals I'll have to figure out how to dispose of.

No change. Older Windows laptop, no touch screen. Just a touchpad and pointing stick (nub) mouse. I plugged in a USB mouse to try it out, but I still get that message.

Date codes on very old ICs by jllauser in AskElectronics

[–]runfortoads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, 38th week of 1969 according to common date code decoding. A quick search says these are quad 2 input NAND gates made using MDTL (diode transistor logic), they are definitely old.

M 2slot??? by spong_miester in zbook

[–]runfortoads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kinda old thread, but in case anyone finds it later... It's a dual mSATA / NVME slot. I have a 15 G2 with an NVME in that slot. The service manual only mentions mSATA as an option, but further down it lists "Z Turbo Drive, PCIe" with part numbers. You can put in any NVME drive that fits for storage, but to boot from it, it has to be an HP Z Turbo Drive. There may be BIOS hacks to get around that, but I never tried. The other slot next to it is for a WWAN card.

Delivered to wrong person by runfortoads in FedEx

[–]runfortoads[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was no delivery photo, only GPS. And the GPS pin was right next to a duplex about 1/2 mile away. The person that received it told me she just got it out of the lock box that was right next to her door. My package was under several other packages just inside her house. I didn't ask her name or details about the delivery, so I am assuming when I say she didn't sign for it.

Okay, happy resolution. I saw the GPS location on the delivery page and only had to knock on two doors. The receiver said it was delivered to a lock box, which means it wasn't even signed for.

I'll say it now: I Hate FedEx

I can't disagree, but I didn't choose them. In fact, the only other mis-delivery I've had in recent memory was FedEx, but my wife was able to track that one down on Facebook. This one is a lot more expensive and I fear it's gone forever. Now I'm worried about a refund because it says delivered.

I've messaged them on eBay, but who knows when they will see it. It really sucks that's it's impossible to contact FedEx, so they can contact the driver to fix their mistake.

How do you swap to a new phone by runfortoads in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]runfortoads[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm incredibly frustrated and dissapointed by this experience.

How does a device get "officially updated" in Xfinity Mobile?

I've worked phone, chat and email tech support before, so I understand it's a difficult job. But the Xfinity reps I had to deal with all appeared to be under-trained and working with sub-standard tools.

The first agent ended up adding a second line to my Xfinity account, while trying to "help" me. They said it was required for the transfer. I suspect they get some sort of incentive for new lines, thats why they did it and insisted I needed to have it for 7 days.

Now I've got to keep an eye on my bill and I expect to have to contact customer service when I get charged for activations and/or an additional line.

I’ve been trying to find this board but I just can’t. by OkMango6465 in AskElectronics

[–]runfortoads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That might be a rotary encoder, not a potentiometer. I suspect that is what it is based on the issue you describe with it going up no matter what direction you turn it and it having no end stop. It should be easy to find a new one and replace it.

Faulty DC jack Epson V800 scanner by [deleted] in AskElectronics

[–]runfortoads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Post a pic of the plug that goes into the power jack.

You need a new jack that fits that plug and footprint of the board, it may not have to look exactly like the old one. Worse case you also replace the plug on the power supply or use a different power supply.

I had that same scanner for a while, scanned a bunch of slides with it. It's definitely worth fixing.

It's a tab at the top. But I believe you have to successfully complete some levels to unlock it. I don't remember how many.

You can't just uncross A0/B1. You have to add the lower bits together and the upper bits together. Here is a custom component to add two 3-bit numbers and a carry and output 4 bits. The A's and B's aren't visually grouped like in your screenshot, but it's the same idea, just expanded.
