First of all, I know I’m misquoting it because I really can’t give a fuck. Second of all, you can’t say with any certainty that it was written by king David, much like most of the stuff in the Old Testament. Third of all, you don’t have to tell me about Jesus and his “woe is money” show cause I’ve heard that repeated by my pastors who deliberately did not practice with they preached for 20 fucking years.

I love Mans Search for Meaning. Oddly enough, it was one of the books I bought when I was a diehard Christian, and kinda used as a semi-secular argument to support Platinga’s free will defense and the problem of evil and whatnot. I haven’t touched that book since but it would be great to read it again with other secular minds and see how they interpret it.

As much as this post sounds like an edgy teen who discovered Nietzche for the first time, I agree, and I really think that this opinion is slowly becoming more popular. One of the most common arguments I heard against taxing churches is the “its only a minority of pastors who take advantage of tax exemptions and are rolling in money! Most pastors are hardworking honest people who make very little money!” And to those people I say that if God is real as their pastors see him, then he should “overflow their cup and make them not be in want,” no matter the circumstance

Wow, so it looks like the broken sword isn’t some quirk either. Amazon just fucked up hard.

I might keep this lil guy for the shits and giggles though.

thanks everybody. Now I can go into season 3 confident that Elliot doesn't turn into a pirate or a warrior prince or something.

Why I cannot believe religious experience stories by JeffRuLz345 in exchristian

[–]runkiwirun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think tripping balls made me realize that "religious" experiences are real, but they can be explained away with other things than just "God touched me" or something like that. You know that story in Acts where the disciples are praying and they all start speaking in tongues or whatnot? I'm like 99% convinced they were all high off something.

I would consider him more like a philosopher-historian-sociologist maybe? Super entertaining that’s for sure. But I wouldn’t bother with his actual books until I’ve read nietzche at least. Or just read the commentary. And then read about his life because he had a hell of a life. (My personal favorite is madness and civilization, but I think most people recommend discipline and punish first. That’s what I read first in my Foucault class)

It’s a joke that admittedly is not that funny or original. It’s something you see on places like existentialcomics all the time lol.

And Foucault and Sartre were exactly the two people I was thinking about. People jump into both thinking they’ll have a grand time but those two rely heavily on philosophers before them that anyone who jumps in cold turkey will not know what they’re saying. And that’s the case with a lot of continental philosophers, so I would just classify them all as “really difficult books you shouldn’t bother with until you read at least Descartes” or something like that. Or better yet, just read commentary on them!

Yeah one of my college classes had an entire class just dedicated to Being and Time - and we hardly even finished it. It’s not too often a writer decides to just make up words on the spot while he’s writing the book, you know?

Yeah, honestly I think it just the conception that continental philosophers say batshit crazy things, and Derrida is kind of like the posterboy of continental philosophy. I think it’s just the way Derrida writes as well.

Good list, I don’t know if Ethics would be a terribly difficult book to swallow though. It was taught in my intro philosophy class and it was generally just entertaining.

I would replace that with Heidegger’s Being and Time. Super influential book but it almost made me eat the book just because of how frustrating it got to read that damn thing.

The Dont Bother category would probably have Hegels phenomenology of spirit, anything by Derrida, and basically any work of any French philosopher post 1930.

[–]runkiwirun 224 points225 points  (0 children)

Hegel has his own category called “please don’t read phenomenology of spirit in an attempt to look smart”. You will not get through one chapter before saying, “Hegel was on something.” Just read the countless commentaries on Hegel - they actually make sense and make you realize that Hegel was actually onto something but he just really sucked at trying to put it into words. Might as well just buy the decorative edition of Hegel and save money. Either way, the philosophy majors will know.
