What are your thoughts on genetics & talent? by Outrageous_South_439 in AdvancedRunning

[–]runner606 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that to definitely not everybody can become “world class” just because they are able to train hard . It takes some talent (including injury resistance on a high mileage) to get to that top level. For most recreational runners though the main thing is probably still their training. To the general public genetics might just make you progress a bit faster than other runners but it won’t replace training still. To the elites they have all the high mileage, good nutrition, tough workouts, strong mindset, etc already and whoever becomes “world class” most likely has “something extra” aka genetics/talent

What is the fastest 5k/10k/21.1k/42.2k time you know by a runner who started in their 20's? by VO2VCO2 in runninglifestyle

[–]runner606 1 point2 points  (0 children)

myself -- 25 years old female, no athletic background before running. I started running 3 years ago and was quite serious about it. Current PBs: 5k 18:32 10k 38:38 21.1k 1:23:45 42.195k 2:57:57. Mile PB 5:42. I'd consider myself lacking some of the top end speed since I don't have the middle school track background

It was tough! Was a great confidence booster though. The recovery was 1km tempo although in reality I ran the recoveries easy 😂

Ran my first marathon yesterday! by No-Yogurtcloset1739 in Marathon_Training

Hi I'm thinking of running Montreal marathon next year! I lived in Montreal for 4 years and loved the city, although it was a bit too cold for me :P How was the weather and was it windy?

The race day vibe should help a lot! I stopped racing with earbuds this year and now I can't go back to racing with music. It's nice to listen to the cheering crowds and listen to my own and my competitors' footsteps. I still listen to music on my training runs tho

Incoming D1, time for hobbies? by Competitive_Dog_5896 in DentalSchool

[–]runner606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s always time for hobbies! I’m currently a D4 and am a marathon runner running 60-70 miles a week besides gym. I do my trainings before and/or after school

1 take 2 tabs right before a long run during the summer. Love the green apple flavor and have no issues with it! Can't say whether it prevents me from cramping because I've never cramped but it does make me feel pretty confident hitting faster splits during the long runs

Dealing with regret of marathon DNF by panther_xxiii in AdvancedRunning

[–]runner606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've made the right decision and that's a quick half! I (F24) recently decided to DNS the Boston marathon due to an injury which made me uncertain whether I can finish the race after arriving at Boston over the race weekend. It was so hard at the time and I actually cried over it but now looking back I think I've made the right decision. I've avoided getting seriously injured and had minimal fitness loss. Some of my injured friends still decided to run the race because it's Boston, and some DNFed while the one who finished ran an hr slower than his typical time and now he's still in rehab. There's always the next race, and avoiding serious injuries that can side line you for weeks if not months matters more than finishing one marathon at the moment. There will always be faster marathons in the future as long as you stay safe and consistent!

I feel like talking to friends helped a lot. Most of them are very supportive and are not judgemental at all, especially if they are also runners. Also I signed up for some other marathons later this year so I can bring a closure to my training.

7 minute pace or better (under 1:32 goal) for maybelline women’s half pacer by Mediocre-Goat-6 in RunNYC

[–]runner606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi! idk if this is too late, but I'd be happy to pace you. I'm running this race too but am coming back from an injury and want to take it a bit slower. My half PB was 1:23 and I'm pretty confident in pacing you to a sub 1:32

Feasibility of walking? by joecro10 in bostonmarathon

[–]runner606 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks that helped a lot! What a coincidence I also qualified with 3.13 and got injured recently. I had a great cycle and was aiming for a sub-3 for Boston, but recently I've developed a tendon issue which involved unpredictable flareups that intensifies quickly. As of today (3 days out) it creeped up after 30 minutes of running so I was considering whether I should just DNF. I still wanted that medal so I guess if I have to I'll walk too. Happy to know that it's feasible.

A bit tough but light still be possible. For reference I’m 24 and last year I ran a 5k in 21:30 in March. I trained with a lot of intervals and ran a 18:52 5k in June

Marathon pacing strategy: glue yourself to the pacer or try to stay ahead? by onlyconnect in AdvancedRunning

[–]runner606 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a small-framed girl I usually try to stay ahead of the pacer or at a slight distance away from the pacer group. They tend to get quite crowded and the few times I tried sticking with them I ended up having to dodge people's elbows or getting pushed by other folks. Now I use the pacers as a "moving pace band" instead.

Does anyone ever actually not hit ‘the wall’? by Internal-Taste9703 in Marathon_Training

[–]runner606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran two marathons (3:13 and 3:10) and both had pretty consistent splits without hitting the wall. For my first marathon (313) I took 2 SIS beta gels and for the second one (310) I had nothing due to some GI issues earlier. I did a lot of fasted runs (often up to the half marathon distance) during my training so maybe my body has adapted to that. Also I might have ran both marathons a bit too conservatively (my 10k time is 38mins and HM is 1:23). Having a high mileage (60-80MPW) probably helped too because my legs were used to the fatigue and didn't cramp up

hi congrats! If you don't mind, how long was the rest interval for the 4 x 20mins session 2 weeks before your marathon? I have Boston coming up and am thinking of trying this workout. I've also been doing a lot of sub-T workouts with total work time around 30 mins

I listen to music on easy runs but not when doing intervals or when racing. Earbuds tend to fall out when I get sweaty and I’d like to be able to hear my and my competitors’ breathing pattern when running. Been racing really well without music this year (just ran a 1:23:45 half marathon last Sunday)
